Note:: This should reference Barddas (the annotated edition gives this as Bardas, but with this orthography, I could only find links to byzantian figures), a book discussing welsh bardic and druidic secrets and theories.

Note:: This is the bavarian city of Regensburg who apparently was founded by Cetic populations. See also about local population during antiquity and early middle ages

Note:: According to alchemical tradition, Mercury has the power to transmute and dissolve, acting as a go-between between the physical and immaterial realm, and Venus is associated with visions and illusions. Which probably explains what 法水means here when he talks of proofs disappearing between the two orbits.

Note:: Really unclear !

Note:: References Paracelsianism, which trid to improve the efficiency of medicine through separation into primodial elements followed by recombination

Note:: Honestly, this is beyond far-fetched. From astrology (Mercury, Venus and the Sun), to alchemy (separating into primordial elements, among which is mercury) to chemistry (mercury sulfide which gives vermilion or cinnabar) to the imagery of blood…

Note:: References Edvard Munch and his Scream painting. Though I wouldn’t spontaneously identify the figure in it as female

Note:: References Benvenuto Cellini, who apparently was a rather unsavoury character. One BBC article I found states that Caravaggio was a “choirboy” compared to Cellini

Note:: Unclear and probably made up. Cellini admitted to killing his brother’s murderer, and after that a fellow goldsmith. I guess it’s this second murder that shows up here a a swordsmith’s murder…

Note:: So… 算哲’s death was deemed a suicide, with him stabbing himself in the heart with a sword. What 法水 is saying here is that 田郷 killed him by literally pulling the rug from under him, so that he fell on the door/sword, and the sword left an imprint of the door’s carving. All this wrapped, for atmosphere, in astrological and alchemy mumbo-jumbo…

Note:: This references the Jendrassik maneuver, first described by Ernő Jendrassik. However, the idea bahind the original Jendrassik maneuver is that the patellar reflex is strengthened during the maneuver, not that the upper body reaction is triggered by lower body stimulation…

Note:: The whole mechanism, in the end, is absolutely brilliant… a bit like the part with the mechanical doll and the locked room. But very, very convoluted…

Note:: Middle-ages motet… though it’s supposed to be sung, not played…

Note:: And the carillon that’s (I guess) built in one of the towers

Note:: Not sure why the 当て字 here is ピール. Peal refers to a type of bell-ringing, not to the bell itself

Note:: How is this possible when Grete Danneberg is dead ?

Note:: References part of a score Gabriel Pierné wrote for a theatre piece, La Samaritaine. The libretto is by Edmond Rostand, and references the good samaritan episode in the New Testament

Note:: Funny, that… didn’t Therese die in Rangoon too ?

Note:: which 100% goes against what a motet is…

Note:: This is Sir John Stainer; it seems he did write madrigals, and anthems and other religious music, but not motets

Note:: Probably made up; at least there is no trace of a book on John Dee written by one of the many Lord Malmesbury avec the centuries

Note:: Christian Science, whose tenets include healing. However, Christian Science was founded in the late 19th century; there’s no way John Dee could have any link to that. Maybe it seemed familiar to early 20th century japanese readers, though ?

Note:: A bit weird. Fauns are indeed half-ram half-humans, though usually they are not divine, and do not possess anyone. The annotated edition makes the link with Typhon, from which typhoid fever is named (and was thought to be a case of possession).

Note:: While I don’t doubt that each part is scientifically sound, I’m not sure that this could actually work…

Note:: Wilhelm Lambrecht built many measuring instruments, among which an air hygrometer

Note:: Half timber wall exemples

Note:: This is the Arianism doctrine, which negates the Holy Trinity. No known Phililaus philosopher, but Philolaus was a pythagorician mathematician and philosopher. He couldn’t have been a follower of Arianism, though, as he lived about 700 years before the doctrine…

Note:: Sir Arthur Eddington. Space, Time, And Gravitation was written in 1920.

Note:: Alfred Binet was a psychologist, working among other things on child developement; he held a professoral chair at the Sorbonne for psychophysiology (not to be confused with physiological psychology

Note:: This is very, very, very niche. No wikipedia page, but this probably refers to Moissey Mühlmann. The annotated edition gives Mühlemann, but I couldn’t find such a person. However, what is described here is a phenomenon called Laryngospasm, and the closest link is to Johannes Peter Müller, and not Mühlmann/Mülhlemann

Note:: Nicollo Machiavelli. Let’s take a minute to appreciate an easy to understand reference…

Note:: But who’s the fourth one ???

Note:: Either a mis-transposition, or a purposeful error (because he was alive at the time the novel was written), of english viola player Lionel Tertis

Note:: And here is our fourth player… apparently not to bothered about sitting in a dead (wo)man’s chair…

Note:: This references Orlando di Lasso, who wrote a musical setting of seven David psalms… though Psalm 91 is not one of them…
