🎄 2024 Aozora Short Story and Essay Advent ⛄

Well, I spent a good portion of December fighting off various colds, and got very behind at some points, but I’ve finally caught up on the pre-vetted list on Xmas Eve. It was a wonderful selection as last year. I really enjoyed re-reading some of the same stories (especially the 太宰治 ones, less so the children’s stories).

Thank you @cat , and I look forward to next year!

Finished off the advent today with クリスマスの贈物 and メリイクリスマス!

I ended up skipping a few days on the vetted calendar, but I also added in a couple from the unvetted and a couple of my own aozora or general same time period reads, so I did manage to do something every day!

This was a lot of fun, got a lot of exposure to new authors and feel a lot more confident about reading this kind of stuff going forward, thanks @cat for putting this together, and merry christmas everyone! :christmas_tree:

I’m so glad so many people joined and enjoyed the Aozora Advent this year!

For myself, I actually swapped out the last story after finding out it had an unfortunate animal-related ending. I had picked the title thinking it would be cute and nice, but alas, I did not realize at that time it was our same horror author from just a few days back :person_facepalming:

To replace it I picked a random story from Aozora, actually looking at the list of new releases this year, which unfortunately means that this one is not yet on Amazon and thus cannot be added to Natively: 中谷宇吉郎 誕生日の贈物

I’ve read this author twice before - his works are pretty accessible overall as he died in the early 60s. The story had some old kanji, but nothing too difficult to guess, and was a short anecdote about family and differing cultures.

I’ll post my bonus essay tomorrow in case it interests anyone, but aside from that have a very merry Christmas everyone! :christmas_tree: :snowflake:

I ended up not reading yesterday (Christmas was busier than expected!) but I got around to it this morning so here is the ‘bonus’ Aozora short: 阿部定さんの印象 | L34

I’ll mention that you should go into the essay knowing who 阿部定 is. This is the English wikipedia page on her for anyone wanting a quick overview: Sada Abe - Wikipedia

I also read 阿部定という女 (浅田一博士へ) | L32 on a lark because it came up in my search and it’s an easier, less verbose version of the first as he’s kind of giving the highlights of his thoughts in a letter to someone.

Anyways, that’s the (late) bonus Aozora!

Thank you @cat for putting everything together!!!

Christmas was quite busy for me, so I didn’t end up reading every day, but I did read 14 stories.
My top three, probably in order, were
ピアノ | L33 ,
桜の樹の下には | L34 ,
待つ | L30
