2024 Bingo Reading Challenge ☑️

When I first saw the book, I thought it was Cure Dolly on the cover
So I totally share your sentiment of “bad cover”.

I’ll throw one more in there: 今度は殺されたくないアザラシさん 1 | L21 - josei office romcom about a woman who was a seal in her past life starting to work with a guy who was the polar bear that killed her in his last life. It’s short, but unfinished (maybe dropped? I haven’t seen an update in a while)

Getting on the board finally!

Read the first volume of ヲタクに恋は難しい 1 | L29 today. I did read the volume in one day, but since it’s harder to find workplace series than for me to finish a volume, let’s go with workplace.

I apparently have a thing for stories where characters go “:3”, maybe that’s a new list idea

I’ll update in the book club thread later (I finished just a tad bit early) but I’m putting 痴人の愛 as my ‘got for free’ book as I just love the cover :joy: Admittedly there’s a million covers for this since it has movie adaptations and reprints but I think the one on Natively is kind of ugly and also…misleading

Technically it’s also the highest level book I’ve read so far at 42, but I have another book planned for that spot :sparkles:

I’m goingto be shamelessly tactical here and count Girls Und Panzer Little Army volume 2 against the “In TBR pile the longest” even though it could be the “added to natively” or “finish in 1 day” category too. But the next longest one on my to read pile after this one is Made in Abyss volume 1, which at level 30, is much harder.

I guess I’ll just have to go read ハピネス1 or 老女的少女ひなたちゃん3 in 1 day to get the finish in 1 day challenge

Finished 傲慢と善良 | L31 with the WK book club; counting it for “author you’ve never read before” (would also be valid for “book club”).

I definitely have some spots that are going to be tricky to fill if I just continue with “read as normal and fill in a square that the book happens to match”…

For “read a book chosen randomly” how random is that? Randomly from the TBR pile? Randomly from the wishlist? From all of Natively (yikes)?

that’s the original prompt:

I think this affects specifically your TBR pile!

Cool (though for me this is a bit like Russian roulette as there are one or two real stinkers lurking in my TBR  )

I’m sure you can temporarily remove them from your TBR
Or use some qualifier that would ensure they’re not selected.

:grimacing: Yikes indeed! This would be a very adventurous prompt.

Finished my second Bingo book, the one for “no gradings” - and now I can reveal that it was Q&A by 小林 大輝 (mentioning the author specifically because there are two books with that title out there).
The general framework of the story was that of a murder mystery, and first I suspected it to be a pretty straightforward case, but it got deeper and deeper and in the end most of the book touched upon philosophical topics as love, life, cruelty, death and so on.
I found the first 1/3 to be a bit of a slog, and I don’t even know why, looking back now :woman_shrugging: Maybe I just had a hard time settling into the story. But after that it became really easy to read.

Interestingly enough, this book would tick 5 bingo boxes for me, namely

  • no gradings/ratings/reviews
  • I added to Natively
  • debut
  • new author
  • award winner (it won the ピクシブ文芸大賞 in 2017)

Oh cool! It looks like you recommend it then?

Absolutely!
I think it will take me a few days to fully digest it, but then I will try my hand at writing a review…

…. I kinda want to try, now… (excluding textbooks and graded readers)

How would you even go about it though? Is there a downloadable list of everything?

Actually, an “I’m feeling lucky, show me a random book” button might be a fun idea…

Wow, good luck!

wonders how to best add a gazillion of obscure books for Naphthalene‘s entertainment

I guess you could determine how many pages there are for all books, randomly choose a page, then do the same for all books on the page?

Why does this sound more and more interesting the longer I think about it :flushed:

Edit: Just tried it and got this: :cold_sweat:

Will limit to novels next time around

Haha, fun! I did it for novels and short stories only, and got this:

Only it has no ebook and I’ve read it in translation already…

Everything except textbooks and graded readers gave me (drum roll)

Err, sure? Why not.

I finished my first bingo square over the weekend after finishing 冥府の王の神隠し | L29; I chose “a book you added to Natively” so I don’t have to worry about keeping track of whether I added something or not in the future, haha.

This particular book could also fill out:

  • No reviews/gradings/ratings
  • New to you author
  • (If you stretch it a bit) workplace setting
  • Non-human protagonist (one of the main characters is essentially a god)

Anyway, on to the next book! I need to plot out one of these squares; @cat mentioned that free square earlier, and if I don’t have anything in the TBR (since that’s the spicy qualifier I’m using) I may end up using この男は人生最大の過ちです 1 | L31 after all

I didn’t get it for free :frowning:
It’s kinda mid so far, but I’ve read much worse. It’s fine for a brain dead day.
