Read the next book in a series - レーエンデ国物語 月と太陽

4 stars :star:
This is the longest book I read this year, with 608 pages It took a lot of time to finish
compared to the first book, the events are better but the characters of the first book are so much better than the 2nd
both books are 4 stars and I feel the third will also be a 4 star yet I am still excited to read it nevertheless

Read something with no other adaption - すべての恋が終わるとしても―140字の恋の話―

3 stars :star:
From the title of this book, you can guess what it is about.
It’s a collection of very short romance stories with only one long story at the end of the book
Overall it was okay but I will definitely not read anything by this author again in the future

Read the book with the lightest cover - ネバーランド

3 stars :star:
I hated it at first, then liked it then at the end I felt it was so-so
yes it was emotional sometimes and some of the characters are really interesting but I felt it was missing something…

Unfortunately, I was able to get one bingo only but that is okay by me

All done!

New books

雪の妖精 | L23
I read this one the first time last winter. It remains the perfect winter read for me. It’s so warm and the art is beautiful. It was also significantly easier than the first time around.

偏屈なクチュリエのねこ活
Pretty sure this was meant to be relaxing, but all of the lookups really killed the vibe. I learned a lot of useful novel vocab though and I feel prepared for the next one!

星降る王国のニナ 1
I read this because the anime was so good. I can now say the anime does do it justice.

I had a great time doing this. I’ll be ringing in the New Year with my first book of bingo 2025.

Posting an update with my completed board on the very last day of the year!!

I originally planned to use the book I’m reading now (越境者が読んだ近代日本文学―境界をつくるもの、こわすもの | L36??) for my last square, Found for Free, but I was unable to finish that so I did some rearranging and moved 不能共 | L29 into that spot since it was a library book. :stuck_out_tongue:

All the books and a few short words about my impressions of each:

Free Space: 一人称単数 | L34 Well, this certainly was a Murakami book. In the forward of the Penguin Collection of Short Stories, Murakami wrote that he dislikes i-novels, but then he went on to write a whole short story collection in i-novel form? Ok sir, this literary gal on the internet feels the need to cheekily call you out for that.

Book I Added: 屑の結晶 | L30 A worthwhile mystery with well-developed characters.

Book Club: 月の裏側 | L33 Not the type of book I’d normally pick up myself, but I appreciated it for what it was (that did not mean that I loved it, though )

Bad Cover: ララピポ | L32 This was hilarious and life changing. I’m never getting over it as long as I live. Like, seriously. NEVER!

Debut Work: 火花 | L35 The ending of this made me tear up and I may or may not have written an overly enthusiastic review on it immediately after finishing. I still stand by it, though!

New Author: ぼぎわんが、来る | L35 Hmm, well this was from horror genre, but it didn’t exactly make me scared.

Award-winner: 同志少女よ、敵を撃て | L39 This was actually quite good and well done. No notes!

Randomly chosen from TBR: JR上野駅公園口 | L45 All I can say is ひたすら重い。

Non-human protagonist: 木になった亜沙 | L27 Wonderfully unhinged, especially the first and third stories. They are going in my 今村夏子 hall of fame!

Higher Level Than I’ve Read So Far: 春琴抄 | L46?? Stunning. The relationship dynamic was a little toxic, but I guess they didn’t have therapists back in the Edo period.

Longest in TBR: 夏の終り | L38 Would you believe me when I say I invented this whole bingo challenge and roped in dozens of you lovely forum citizens just so I could finally pressure myself into reading this?

Finish a Series: 先輩と僕 総務部社内公安課 FILE 2 | L28 If you like perfectly passable light novels set in corporate environments, this is a nice entry to the sub-genre with a little extra darkness in the first volume.

No Gradings: 1R1分34秒 | L33 I’m not even sure why I was so into this book, but I absolutely was. Now everytime I see anything related to boxing I’m like “hell yeah!” and feel like I kind of know what’s going on. (I don’t really.)

Non-fiction: 堕落論 | L45 坂口安号 drank too much and had a lot of hot takes and, spicy opinions that he wrote about at length, but it’s weirdly charming?

Found for Free: 不能共 | L29 This was chaotic and cursed, but I absolutely loved all of it. Disclaimer: If you read it based on my endorsement and happen to get traumatized, I will not accept responsibility.

Workplace Setting: 御不浄バトル | L33 It’s weird how often I think back to this book considering it is just full of scenes of the main character using the bathroom at work (described in excruciating detail). But I have to say, I definitely saw the author’s vision and love that this book exists.

All in all, it’s been a lot of fun completing my board this year and seeing everyone’s updates! The entire idea to set this up came to me when I was wishing I had a challenge or list of prompts to tackle that would force me to finally read the oldest book on my TBR - then I thought, wouldn’t it be fun to turn that into some kind of bingo thing so lots of us can learn and read together? It’s so awesome how everyone took that and ran with it, helping think up rules, prompts, modifiers and more. This truly is one of the best communities out there! :books:

I’ll see you all in the 2025 thread for another round!

Ah yes, a little toxic. :joy:

Edit: ah, we also need to ask @brandon to grant the prize titles! Hopefully everyone has updated their info in the table at the top…
(As far as I understand, the easiest way would be to make a custom badge per title (and set it so that it provides the title), then grant the appropriate badge to everyone concerned)

Yes! @brandon, if this is possible and if there is any info you need to make this happen let me know! :slightly_smiling_face: Thank you so much!

Final bingo card:

Sadly did not finish read something free or new author, and had no motivation for non-fiction. Still given how awful this year was working overtime, I’m happy enough with it.

2025 I’m using this as an excuse to burn down my TBR manga pile. It’s in the triple digits now…

…I’d completely forgotten there was a table tbh.

Christmas period was fairly busy for me, but I did manage to read 14/25 of the aozora advent calendar, so I’m putting in that group as my ‘no cost’ column.
It’s maybe not equivalent to a whole book, but hopefully it’s OK as I don’t have any free books.

Happy New Year everyone!

Sorry for the late reply! Can you tell me exactly what I need to do? For everyone that completed it do I give them a custom badge?

I believe it would be a custom title instead:

I’ve never had to set these up before, but I image they’d be linked to custom groups you would set up, and everyone who meets the criteria for the group (1 bingo, 2 bingos, etc.) would be manually added in, and therefore have access to the title.

No worries!! Thanks for getting back to me.

We had different ranks for the amount of bingos received that determined the custom title:

Rank 1 - one bingo: 読者
Rank 2 - two bingos: 本好き
Rank 3 - three bingos: 本の虫
Rank 4 - four bingos: 司書
Rank 5 - all squares filled: 一目十行

So, users need a custom title that corresponds with the number of bingos they got (which they should have indicated in the wiki post in the second post on this thread).

We would need custom title made for the five ranks above which may be slightly annoying to set up, but I can put everyone from the wiki into a google sheet so that it’s possible to filter by each rank to help you do this favor more easily. :slightly_smiling_face:

So you don’t have to do things twice or people don’t miss out, let me make a reminder in both this thread and the 2025 one for people to update the wiki by end of day Sunday and I can make a spreadsheet and send it to you early next week if that works? Just lemme know! Thank you!!

Was it a badge or a title that we wanted? You can’t display badges, but you can titles.

Ah yes, “titles” if that’s what the proper discourse terminology is  a title

A badge with an associated title is better! (Like regular, or the durtles on WK)
A title is not reversible, so if you get one but then switch to “regular”, you can’t switch back. Badges, as long as you have them, allow you to switch anytime you want.

I guess @brandon would need to advise if badges with an associated title is something that could be possible for us here too, but that sounds good to me as well!

Apparently, it’s as simple as going to the admin panel, then:

Create Custom Badges: To create a custom badge, click on “New Badge”. Fill in the details such as name, description, and badge type(gold, silver, or bronze).

Apparently there’s also a toggle there to say that the badge can be used as a title.
That’s an even bigger reason to use badges. Otherwise @brandon would have to type manually the title for everyone. Well, he will still have to manually grant the badges, but still.

Thank you for finding that @Naphthalene! 🫰🏻

Ok @brandon, I will try to make things as easy as possible by sending you written instructions of what to do and how as per Naphthalene’s comment, as well as a filterable Google sheet so you can sort users for each badge together. That should hopefully make this an easy-ish favor.:pray:t2:

Also, badges can stack, no? Like, you got a full bingo so many times. That would be super cool as well

I wonder if we get all titles up to and including the maximum one we earned? Some of the middle tier ones are more fun :stuck_out_tongue:
