Ah that sounds cool! But admittedly I’m not planning to read 20+ books to get there ![]()
I’ve just added my card to the post above though I’m not sure how to add it to the table. Can someone please assist?
I’ve completed one book
I’m using this for ‘going in blind’ because I’d read the one book by the same author a couple of years ago but knew nothing about あひる when I started it. It was definitely an interesting ride. I didn’t expect three dead ducks and didn’t know the book is actually three short stories.
At the bottom right of post #2 there is a Edit link that opens the wiki for editing.
Thanks. I saw that but it won’t let me right click to paste the URL for the card and it does funny things when I try to add myself in alphabetical order. Might be because I’m on mobile. I’ll try desktop later.
EDIT: done, much easier on desktop
I read サイレント・ウィッチ III 沈黙の魔女の隠しごと which was great! I feel like this book was more eventful than the previous two volumes. I want to read something shorter and easier next though, this took me over a month of almost daily reading. I put it in the current bookclub slot because there is a Wanikani bookclub for it. I like Silent Witch books but they’re long and hard and thus take ages to get through and always feel a burned out at the end of them. They’re just really good though! Hoping to read at least 2 more volumes this year.
Think I’ll try to fill the “Recommended to me” slot next, but haven’t decided for sure yet.
Yay for joining us! Hope you have fun diving back into Japanese! ![]()
A new bingo update, and I finally have a bingo! With more to come soon hopefully, but I think by my next update I’ll have expanded my bingo to add more prompts. When it comes to adding those squares though, I do wonder whether I should continue to do it both ways so it stays a square, so going from 7x7 to 8x8 and so on, which would be asthetically pleasing but would mean each time I add squares I’ll lose all my bingos, or whether I should just go one way only. I’d love to hear what y’all think!
Now, onto the actual update. I’ve finished 6 more books these past two weeks each, with the only language I’m missing being Italian as I’m still in the middle of several books for this one.
First comes Japansese, with the classic 1 going into the free space! Nice level, although as expected it wasn’t super interesting. Still decent though, and it was nice being able to read something with only a few lookups needed.
Next is a buddy read, 비밀 by Higashino Keigo. Except since I’ve already filled my buddy read square, this is instead going into Keep hearing about it, which is true, I’d heard so many things about it I could not wait to read it and it lived up to the hype! I can see how it might not be everyone’s style because it’s quite a slow book, but it was really interesting to read.
We continue with Korean with 살인자의 정석 going into the Not translated prompt! I don’t think any of this authors works have been translated into English, but at least this one for sure hasn’t been. This was a short story collection, and it was interesting but not necessarily might style. I’m usually all for weird short stories but I didn’t vibe with these for some reason.
Next, in Korean again, I read This is one I’ve been wanting to read for a long time, and it did not disappoint. The main character is autistic and non-verbal, which made for a very interesting story, and it’s also a bit of a mystery in a way. I absolutely recommend this one, and vocab and grammar wise it’s also quite easy. This fulfills the Disability rep prompt, which gives me that bingo!
And we’re back to Japanese with 俺物語!! 1. This one was recommended to me on Shitsurei, so thank you once again for this amazing rec, I don’t think I would’ve picked it up otherwise but it ended up being quite a fun read, with a bit more vocab than よつばと! but that just means I got to learn more things while reading it. I will definitely be continuing this series, I probably won’t read every single volume but at least right now, it’s both at a great level for me and entertaining.
And finally, I’ll end this update with Spanish, with El asombroso viaje de Pomponio Flato. I was really looking forward to reading it because really loved Sin noticias de Gurb | L37 by the same author, but this ended up being nice, but nowhere near that level. Maybe if I hadn’t come in with those expectations I would’ve enjoyed it more, as it is I’m tempted to just give it a three star rating. I’ll give it some time before I review it, but yeah, my first impression isn’t great. It wasn’t bad but I feel like it didn’t exactly deliver, and with the blurb claiming that it’s “Eduardo Mendoza’s most ferociously funny novel” too? Now that’s just not true. This one is going into my Mystery prompt, although I still don’t think it was that satisfying as a mystery but I don’t exactly have anywhere else to put it for now. I might just read El juego del alma | L30?? for a garanteed good mystery, and while I do plan on giving some of Eduardo Mendoza’s books another shot, I want to give myself a bit of a buffer first, read something I know I’ll truly enjoy.

I’m still reading a bunch of things, but none of them are on this board, so this is my early March update.
…the real reason is that I finished WILD ADAPTER | L27 (for the “prettiest cover” in vol 5) and I’m a bit traumatised. I should’ve known that this would hurt - Minekura-sensei is so unwell that she takes crazy hiatuses (7 years before vol 7 and 9 years after) - and often when authors Go Through It, the characters do too. But also, what did I expect from the yakuza premise?..
Anyway, I require fluff and love and nothing serious for the next forever thankyouverymuch and for you all:
Here is some colored art from the beginning of the volumes (can be found in the Kindle samples too)
Vol 5:
Vol 6:
Vol 7:
What else is new…
1 - for “keep hearing about it” - it’s quite fun but feels a bit more western than I expected. I’m very glad I got to see vol 1’s final scene’s resolution in vol 2 sample. I might continue, but not now.
https://learnnatively.com/book/0ed28f4a9d - planned to read in 2025 and it ended up staying at 18% for almost a year. It was less fun than vol 1 and reading it with audiobook, while making it easier, also made me feel like I’m cheating myself out of a learning experience (this book is definitely within my reach for normal reading with a dictionary).
| L23 2 volumes with 0 revenge plot happening anywhere on the horizon. But it’s cute. But I want a revenge plot. Or subplot. Or at least a glimpse of SOME vengeance, please?
Oh, that’s the first bingo. Yay!
What’s everyone doing for non modern setting? I’ve planned most of my slots but can’t pin this one down. Spice and Wolf is probably too hard.
I used a book that is set in early Shouwa and that felt 100% non-modern to me ![]()
(But it was the biography of two authors and rather difficult, so I don’t think it’s interesting as a book in general)
If you are looking for some medieval fantasy stuff, 狐笛のかなた | L30 is quite an easy read (and a nice entry drug for the author‘s more difficult works
)
A lot fantasy books fit in that. You could probably just look for fantasy books on Learn Natively and find one that’s set in the past.
I personally might toss a Silent Witch volume in there.
アサギをよぶ声 works too if you want 一般小説.
A lot of 異世界 books play out in medieval Europe-like worlds
I haven’t read the second one yet but I heard it’s good.
There is also 本好きの下剋上 if you want something more slice of life.
There are some fantasy romance books like
(I haven’t read these two yet, but I want to in the future)
If you want something easier there is a novelization of the first Frieren season
There probably are some sci-fi books that play out in the future which would fit the criteria of the prompt. I don’t know any though.
Thank you. I’ll take a look a those. I was imagining that it’d need to be set in the real world. But if I can use medieval setting isekai then that opens a lot of options.
Took me longer than I thought to read through 骨ドラゴンのマナ娘 series of 6 volumes (I did have a 3 and a bit week holiday from work, during which I didn’t read much as I was away from home). I really enjoyed the art style and chibified dragons that showed up.
ダンジョン飯 is proving more difficult since it has no Furigana and a lot of less common words considering what types of manga I’ve read so far. Will keep this in the wings at the moment.
Next up is 蛍火の杜へ 1 (f)
Previous reads
1 (f) - non fiction
So how far do I want to go with this one…
Well, now I own 29 of them (still didn’t read any)
Hm… It’s a tough one.
But something is telling me that if I shape my bingo as tsundoku&wishlist decreaser, catching up with stuff I buy for these series during the year might still be in scope. And the lesson should be “don’t buy if you wouldn’t read”.
For a couple of series that I finished for the bingo I continued a nice read-all-you-own trend
Got and read 6-13 too
Got and read 4 and gonna get 5 too when a sale comes up
P.S. Thank GOD I didn’t add One Piece (my ownership went from the first 15 volumes to the first 61).
UPD: Damn. I also bought the rest of Ansatsu Kyoushitsu…
Just finished こどものころにみた夢, a short story anthology, for a book with no ratings reviews or gradings. I wrote a review on the book page, if anyone is interested.
As part of the current Read-a-thon going on, I’ve covered off a few additional volumes of various manga including;
1 (f) (in the free square though I do intend to read both the second volume of it and any additional volumes of manga series I’ve already read, once they arrive)
Current manga being read is:
ベル・プペーのスパダリ婚約~「好みじゃない」と言われた人形姫、我慢をやめたら皇子がデレデレになった。実に愛い!~ 1
Past reads
1 (f) - non fiction
Also realized I got a diagonal bingo after reading yesterday but didn’t notice ![]()
Next up is
You can try reading deciphering 春色梅児与美 (text file containing all furigana) in its glorious original kuzushiji form, like a true scholar.
Deciphering the kanji is a lost cause but deciphering the kana is a lot more feasible than you might think thanks to the work of CODH, NINJAL and NIHU on annotating every character. It is really cool because you learn about the different 変体仮名, 歴史的仮名遣い, and 踊り字.
So you are saying that my handwriting is totally valid, just a bit outdated, yeah?
