Yeah, this list is just for non-fiction about BL - although we could have a āBL Universityā series if there are other themes the book club members want to collaborate on?

Some ideas that pop to mind:
If we need to set up a mini-bookclub or whatever in order to do research for all thisā¦ I donāt have much of a life these days anyway.

Iām sure scouring back through this thread will give us lots of titles for ānostalgia baitā, and Iām sure https://www.chil-chil.net/ will have lots of useful lists for popular manga/LN titles, both past and present.

Iād be fine keeping the discussion here. Like you said, book club threads are pretty dead between voting phases, and itās going to be triplely worse for us since we had that 3-way tie. x.x
I donāt mind being added for future lists! o/ Canāt guarantee Iāll always be able to add much, haha, but youāre welcome to add me.
This also sounds like a good idea to me; also helps keep us from having eight different lists with one entry each on them. 
Thatās the fun/frustrating part of making fun lists for stuff in a language youāre learning: generally the pool of what youāve read/seen is too small to be the only source of discussion, so we have to band together to fill in the gaps!
While weāre waiting for others to chime in with their thoughts, I think we could probably get started with this:
There were lots of titles bandied about when we were discussing it a while back, so I donāt mind having a look through the old posts.
You could set up the list and write a short description (if you donāt mind, that is) - we can always add/edit things later.
We may have to think of a short description of what BLU is and link to this threadā¦ So Iāll have to include something in the home post (collection of BLU lists).

Iāll add the manga Iāve come across so far. Iām up to this post:
Seems like we veered off onto mangaka rather than specific manga.
One thing we may need to discuss, speaking of Naono Bohra, is how tight we want to be between featuring officially-published stuff and stuff that made an impact through fan translations (at least, Iām only familiar with her through fan trans). I donāt know if thereās going to be any good way to gather numbers/impact from fan translations, but weāre also not obligated to cite hard numbers anywhereā¦ I donāt know, thoughts? At the very least it could be difficult (but interesting) to try to track down original release dates of fan translationsā¦
(Side note: fan translations as a community is so interesting; itās a shame I bet thereās very little academic investigation into it, and a lot of that history is very likely already lostā¦)

Edit: Iāll add info to the Early Western Canon list in bits and pieces. I am ordering it by earliest NA release date at the moment, so donāt panic if you see stuff jumping around. I need to add the Loveless anime, but Iāll need to wait for it to be approved first.

Ah, and I made the list level upper-intermediate, since I figured there would be a wide range of stuff, but honestly 99% of this is likely to be manga, so I could probably bump it down a notch.
Personally, Iād put them altogether on one list - Iām sure most people consumed Japanese media through both official and unofficial channels (and those unofficial channels were probably monitored by English-language publishers to find out what was popular anyway).
I think we can only really look to how much was translated by fans to gauge how popular something was - I canāt think of another way of measuring fan translations. Generally, I think authors that were popular had a lot of their stuff translated and the translations were spread widely over different sites (although whoās to say it wasnāt just very dedicated fans and only a tiny audience?).
BLU needs to organize an archaeological dig site at historic LiveJournal.

I think tags would probably cover most cases. Weāll need to add a BL University tag to our lists!
For the lists Iāve made, Iāve added multiple level tags to cover the range of titles, I donāt think you need to stick to only one level tag if there are items at vastly different levels.

If anyone has better descriptions, feel free to add! Iām not great with words, but it would be nice to have a little bit about how itās the culmination of peopleās experience and history with BL, pooling accumulated knowledgeā¦ Something like that.

Thatās a good question. I personally am fine with just a link to other notable media adaptions released in English in the main itemās description, since I wasnāt watching any anime during the time this list covers, but there may well be people who think of shows first when considering early 2000s BL. Thoughts from others?

Edit: it is; crazy stuff. The artist for that series is the same artist whoās doing the manga adaption of äŗéčŗę as wellā¦ Man, even in Japan the BL scene is a small world.
So a question to split off of these links (thanks, by the way): Iām assuming whatās considered ānotableā is generally going to be decided by the shared memories of our users here, correct? Perhaps that, plus series that sold highly, if we can find numbers? I was just wondering if we wanted a cutoff on the # of books we cover in the list.

Yeah - although Juneās website is still going I noticed a lot of titles were missing (expired licences I guess), so wayback is handy.
Yeah, the ones mentioned were the titles we remembered being popular at the time we got into BL, which happened to be during the 00s (Iād guess weāre of a similar age range + manga was becoming more widely available).
If you can find info on sales figures or other data, that would be great. Something I noticed is that there are a lot of manga frozen in time on amazon - published during the 00s, then unavailable since Tokyopopās 2010 demise. The number of reviews could possibly serve as a measure of popularity.
Just checking @bibliothecary - have you gone through the thread already? Are we expecting new entries on the list from it, or has that been checked off?
I havenāt looked through the rest from where I indicated I stopped earlier - as I mentioned, we veered into mangaka, so I wonder if we should pick popular works from those listed, or just move on?
