Yayyy!! Thank you for all the work on this 🙂

I think this should at least be extended to lists as well… It’s a little frustrating as a list creator to have a list censored, with no indication.

As a hypothetical reader, I’d want to know on any page that something is being hidden fwiw.

I’m personally bad at determining what is/isn’t an NSFW cover. Maybe it would make sense to have a thread _somewhere_ for people to ask “does this count as an NSFW cover?”, just like there’s a Tags discussion thread.

I honestly think this should be the _only_ option for the covers. It makes so much more sense to blur the cover if the content itself isn’t NSFW.

I agree with this, it’s weird having content disappear from users profiles and activities depending on filters. I think a better solution would be to prompt for content filter changes only if the user clicks on the content’s page, or maybe just blur the thumbnail if it’s actually NSFW? [ヤニねこ S1 | L28](https://learnnatively.com/season/a8f441ff96/) , is marked as adult content, but the name and thumbnail aren’t , and you only see some NSFW content if you actually watch it.

Fair enough. I can add a filter it to profiles & lists as well. Probably not on the public activity feed though.. as that’s the main functionality for it and it’s less of a “i navigated to this specific. object” and more of a general feed. If i did includ it, then that warning would be there a lot, which feels wrong.

Maybe.. but it’s easier and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to just filter? If you mark yourself as uninterested in the NSFW covers what’s the major difference between filtered and blurred?

> [@gillianfaith](#):
>
> Presumably if a user is searching specifically for adult content, they want to see adult content in the results, so should it should be shown to them regardless while the filter is active?

Perhaps, but that’s lower priority. And if you do filter by them and get 0 results with the sensitive content filter warning.. i think that’s a reasonable behavior

Like, I feel [JKハルは異世界で娼婦になった | L29](https://learnnatively.com/book/cf56620661/) should logically have “adult content” as a tag because that describes the contents well, but it also should not be filtered as porn because it is not.

I know that the term sounds like “not kids content” but “Adult Content” is quite a standard industry term for pornographic/r18 content. In that case simply mark stuff like rape / sexual assault (these are not “adult” tags)… save the “Adult Content” tag for pornographic stuff.

The use case would be something like: “I’m potentially interested to know about xyz content/work, but don’t want people around me to see the cover”. This might be helpful say on the subway or in some work environments.

I think it’s fine either way, since you can just click the toggle at the top of the results to enable it

I think if the tag name is changed to “Adult/Pornographic Content”, it will probably clear this up without complicating things"

I think that’s reasonable, because the precedent is already set that some users don’t share their activity and the activity feed is limited to people who have chosen to make their profiles public. Activity on adult items could just all be considered “Private” activity regardless of the user’s settings.

> [@brandon](#):

Knowing that those items exist and being able to find them at all. Users reading that material may just want to avoid having NSFW images all over their screen when browsing in public, without losing the ability to find and interact with those items.

Personally, I don’t like websites curating my experience for me and don’t want any books hidden from me whether I’m into them or not, so I don’t intend to use the sensitive filters at all. But I would still rather not see super ecchi covers while browsing.

Yes, I agree with this. The point about “NSFW cover” is that the problem is just the cover image (otherwise it would be “adult content”), so I think the way to handle that is just not to show the image on the website. It’s not that I’m “uninterested” in something with a sketchy cover, I just don’t necessarily want the image on screen if I’m in a public location.

[@tag-moderators](https://forums.learnnatively.com/groups/tag-moderators) this should be something you know. I’m sure it will be a continuing conversation xD

I don’t know about other sites, but I know that the BL stuff I am reading is extremely explicit. That being said, genitals are censored (they are whited out). Does it stop being ‘Adult Content’ in that case? The whiteout itself is a way to go around pornography laws in Japan, but that rule sounds silly to me.

Edit: ah, but here I mean “BL” from the publisher’s point of view (as in the label it is published under), not the BL tag in here.

Ok everyone - so I’m planning to do a series of followups here to address your concerns:

- will switch the default NSFW Cover setting to blurring NSFW covers only. The settings toggle will turn that blurring off or on. Even with the setting off, you’ll be able to click to see the cover. Only items tagged as NSFW Cover will be blurred. Adult content by default won’t be.
- for viewing public user profiles, i’ll have a global sensitive content warning if a profile includes any sensitive content. It will have a one time view option there. Do note that for non-logged in users they cannot view sensitive content.
- i will add a similar mechanism for lists

I think that will address everyone’s major concerns. Let me know if that doesn’t sound right!

I think if it’s just a little bit of white out but a bunch of sex with pornagraphic purpose it should be adult content. We all know that even Japanese porn blurs out some parts… 😂

But yeah, i must confess i’m not an expert in this area. We can look to AniList/MyAnimeList for some guidance.. but from what i’ve seen, not all BL is labelled as adult.

I tried stuff I have read AND added here. Only one was on AniList, and one on MAL. It may be that I don’t know how to search on those sites. Anyway, the one on AniList only had the BL tag (despite being wild with the spicy scenes), the one on MAL had BL and erotica. I guess erotica fits the intent of the Adult Content tag, so close enough.

Ah, I found another one on MAL and it had the BL and erotica tags, so it may be reliable?

So for anilist I know that it silently filters adult content out. You have to be a logged in user and set your settings to ‘allow adult’ in order to see the results.

As for MAL i’m not sure.

We could use the tag ‘Erotica’ instead of ‘Adult Content’ if people find that more intuitive.

I find [Mangadex](https://mangadex.org/) is very good for determining this. They have 3 tiers: Safe, Suggestive (approximate to ecchi), Erotica (what we’re calling adult content here). At least for the GL titles I’ve looked at (a lot), they’re very good at marking. You would have to adjust the “Content Filter” setting the first time you use it probably. Their selection is pretty wide, and you can search in English or JP (or even romaji).

Well, I can’t find the stuff I read in there either, so it’s kind of a moot point 😅
I can find somewhat old stuff though and it is erotica, like on MAL.

Ok everyone! We got our blurring covers 🙂

I may tweak a few more things with regards to the NSFW Cover (probably don’t need the tag NSFW Cover badge there..) but this is the jist of it. We don’t filter NSFW Covers anymore only blur. You’ll also see sensitive content notices on profiles & lists where it’s hidden:

 ![Screenshot 2026-08-02 at 10.17.22 PM](https://do4ryrayvtpwi.cloudfront.net/original/3X/6/7/6794ce25cea804194760b81219d0bed02a8a1de9.png)

Let me know if that covers all the concerns!

Edit: After playing around with it a bit more, a few things I think I’ll change:

- only surface the ‘sensitive content filtered’ for (text searches or \<60 results) on the search page.. if i don’t have those conditions, the notice always shows..
- remove ‘NSFW Cover’ badge at top of the detail page

At some point, maybe i’ll add an ‘A’ badge on which search results are marked adult.. although I don’t think it should really matter ? If people don’t care about adult or not, then the tag isn’t that important.. and if people do care, then it will be filtered out? I’m not sure. There is a badge on the detail page.

Edit 2: Ok implemented those changes

Edit 3: Implemented the \<60 results sensitive content notice

I feel like X (or even XXX) would be a lot more intuitive here. ‘A’ would mean nothing to me at a glance 😅

Just use giant 👀 emoji for that instead.

When I see an ‘A’, I immediately think of the movie Easy A, which is loosely based on The Scarlet Letter. Not quite the same thing, but in the same ballpark. 😂

That’s surprising. I’ve found some pretty obscure stuff (recent and old) on there. [www.mangaupdates.com](http://www.mangaupdates.com) is the other database type site I know of. But I haven’t used it much, so idk if it will be of use. I think they just have the erotica tag

I have a few more suggestions

1. If you are looking at search results and a NSFW cover is blurred, clicking it will unblur it. However, the cover is the largest and therefore most natural place to click to _open_ a book page. So you may want to only have it unblur on the book page itself. This probably applies to most parts of the site.
2. Sharing a NSFW cover book on the forums does not blur the cover. That may be hard to handle if you’re only blurring it at the JS level and not the resource level, but something to consider.
3. Since direct links still work, do you want to add something to the embed (full and link only versions) to indicate when a book is considered adult content? I’m not really sure what approach would be best, but certain individuals \*cough\* in this thread \*cough\* do like to share these on the forums, so it would be good to know what I’m getting myself into if I click the link.
