We read 密やかな結晶 since we all have a copy of it and want to read it.
We could take turns leading for 4 weeks at a time.
I’ve had a quick look and I think there are 28 chapters. They probably won’t be equal in length but I think that is about 15 pages per chapter on average. So the simple starting strategy would be to read a chapter a week and see how we are getting on.
EDIT: By the way, I have a script to produce the home post and the weekly posts (or entries in a thread if I like) so either I could start and set the format that you can then copy if you like, or I could always post and you (two?) could more tend to running the club contents-wise. You can have a look at any kinda recent book club I ran to see what it looks like and whether you like it.
Coincidentally, 猫を抱いて象と泳ぐ currently has a coin cashback of slightly more than 50% at BookWalker. Will grab it EDIT: Grabbed it just in case
(grabbed it because I just received the coins from the Bookmeter Review Challenge, so I can rightly say that I bought this book from money I earned through my Japanese skills )
I think the idea is to read it more or less at the same pace we did ミーナの行進. It’s a pretty relaxed pace, but which lends itself really well to 小川洋子’s works. And the japanese she writes isn’t super hard.
Thanks for your comments, but as much as I would like to read more Ogawa the key skill in hanging out in these forums is the ability to resist joining too many bookclubs!
This was an interesting read (I’m also not familiar with 泉鏡花), but I also didn’t know that 「夕暮れの給食室と雨のプール」had been translated and published independently first. I’ve been curious why those three novellas in The Diving Pool had been chosen; I wonder if it’s related.
Just in case people are looking for something to ask for from Santa…
I am going to suggest that our next 小川洋子 read is 寡黙な死骸、みだらな弔い - her collection of dark short stories (translated in English as ‘Revenge’)
It is only available in paper copy, so people might like to order it early if they’d be interested in joining. (We won’t be starting until February sometime).
Whichever book is chosen for the next read, I will be sure to start on time Joining one month late for 密やかな結晶 proved to be a higher hurdle than I had expected.
(I do already have a copy of 寡黙な死骸、みだらな弔い! The cover of mine is much simpler than the hardcover copy)
