Bug: Filtering tags doesn't always work

When I look for books with the Romance and Fantasy tags, while explicitly excluding the “Female Harem” tag, some books with that tag still show up.

Here is my search query as a link
https://learnnatively.com/search/jpn/books/?type=light_novel,novel&ntags=-female-harem,fantasy,romance

Books such as this still show up:

I do notice that all the books with that tag have a low percentage next to it (not entirely sure what that’s for). Does the system just not apply those tags to those books when that percentage is low? Is that a bug or a feature?

I think you need to check “include minor elements” or the search doesn’t filter for tags with a low percentage

If that’s how that option is meant, it’s really unclear from the wording imo

@Biblio is correct, this is how it works

The search is a little needlessly complicated, but it does produce good results. Basically we default to a threshold of 25%+ to be included in general search. If major elements only is checked, it’s 75%+. If include minor elements, then everything is returned.

@Snappie those percentages are indications of how large an element that tag is in the content. It’s based on averaged user voting (click on the little up/down icons on the tag to vote).

I would have thought that’s the opposite of what @Biblio is saying… If the goal is to exclude anything with the Female Harem tag, are these the right steps?

  1. Search Romance tag
  2. Add -Female Harem
  3. Check “Include minor elements” to exclude series that have a Female Harem tag at a low percentage?

If so, might I suggest changing the word Include to Exclude or Apply (since seemingly it affects positive and negative results? Or am I misunderstanding still?)

“Apply” might work better, yes . I’m imagining that removing the ‘include minor elements’ / ‘major elements’ check boxes and simply have a dropdown ‘Apply tags >25%’ as the default but configurable to all, >25, >50, >75…

Granted having ‘main element/minor element’ terminology is probably more clear for newbies. Something we could definitely improve though… perhaps a new product request? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
