I didn’t realize Notion would be controversial I already had a handful of things in Notion. I like that I can make pages with linked sub pages and have text disappear behind drop downs like here in the forums.
When I did my Japan trip earlier this year I put all the flight, hotel, and planned destination info in Notion to share with my partner. I also have used it in the past for my note taking of character names/details for books I’m reading, and quite some time ago I used to use it to make a list of every unknown word I came across while reading paperbacks. It was handy as the the word often came up again and I could just quickly look at my list. Due to the aforementioned ‘sub pages’ I could keep things from getting overwhelming by sorting them into chapters.
I wouldn’t say I’m a power user by any means, but to me a tool is a tool and if I’m already using it all the better, you know?
I didn’t want to say that it’s controversial by any means
It was just new to me at the time my friend told me about it (i.e. a few weeks ago). I am way too disorganized (maybe?) for such a tool, I feel - I have lots of information here and there (e.g. Anki for my unknown words, Google Spreadsheets for reading stats, Bookmeter and Natively for books, a small wiki for conference talk proposals and biographies, Apple Notes for general note-taking, and lots of paper notebooks that I write in), but not one tool to rule them all.
I sometimes wish I had already organized everything neatly like this, and I’m a bit envious if somebody manages to, but by now I’ve come to realize that it will never happen for me, and I have made peace with that thought.
Oh I definitely don’t use it that way I also have my notes and such scattered across different domains. Notion is good for some things but it’s not my single multi-tool and I doubt I’ll ever have one of those.
So I finally finished cataloging my books. This is my physical books as well as any audiobooks and ebooks I own. I have the numbers!
A quick note on these numbers - I combined text-books and audio-book entries - they have tags to denote what they are. Therefore, I have both an audiobook of 理由 as well as a physical copy of 理由 but they are counted as one “book”.
I also did not combine 上・下 volumes so for example 犯罪者 上 and 犯罪者 下 count as two books.
I also removed manga and textbooks from these numbers. TBH I’m not sure I’ve even catalogued all my manga, but I don’t read manga all that much and don’t own that many so it’s not super relevant to me for cataloging.
So, with that out of the way - what’s my shelf looking like?!
Total books: 343
Read/finished: 101
Partially read: 28*
DNF: 7
In progress: 11
Not read at all: 196
For funsies - how many 上・下 sets do you think I have?
Answer: 9
* Partially read for me means ‘I don’t yet plan to DNF this, but I definitely got some ways into it so it’s no longer a brand new book to me’. The majority of them are audiobooks.
Of my not-read and partially read books, 120 are physical copies (a decent chunk coming from my recent used book haul ). I currently have 30 read physical books, but unless I really liked the book/want to reread someday I tend to either give away or sell my books once done. Shelf space is a priority
Anyways, I currently read about 25 books a year. I’m at 23 for this year but should wrap at least 3 but hopefully 5 by the end of the month so here’s hoping I have lots of reading time in the new year
