Ah okay, my point was that I already posted in there. I actually picked it up because of the club.
For some reason I thought I hadn’t seen you comment in there, but nope, just checked and you’re definitely in there ![]()
goal updates
Not great results, mostly because I originally was going to have a lot more free time this august but some work changes happened and…I was really busy instead. Not to mention a lot of other life stuff. But such is life.
August Goal Review:
- Finish Level 41 of WK
finished 41 but not more - Keep up with book clubs

-
- 付き合ってあげてもいいかな
on track
- 付き合ってあげてもいいかな
-
- 百合オタに百合はご法度です! ? for Class-S club. At least 1 vol
read 1 vol
- 百合オタに百合はご法度です! ? for Class-S club. At least 1 vol
-
- Memories off for VN Club. At least 1 route
did not finish a route though still reading
- Memories off for VN Club. At least 1 route
-
- 乙嫁語り
done with volume 1 and won’t continue
- 乙嫁語り
- roughly ~24 eps worth of anime
Watched around 4 eps and a bit of a movie. - return to reading Marimite3 and finish it
changed this to かがみの孤城 and I’m only 20% through it
- Finish the current season of one of the german dubbed shows I’m watching
I dropped all the german shows I am watching because I wasn’t really looking forward to watching any of them. Not sure if this is a fail or win but technically I accomplished my underlying goal of “don’t have that many unfinished german show laying around”
Gonna carryover my goals mostly
- finish level 42 of wk
- Book clubs…
-
- finish かがみの孤城
-
- 百合オタに百合はご法度です! ? → finish vol2-3
-
- finish a route of memories off (and then decide if I want to read more)
-
- (not natively) also running my own manga book club for my friends though it’s a reread for me. This might not work out for reasons unrelated to me however. Let’s say this is an “unofficial” goal.
- roughly ~24 eps worth of anime…again. This can’t be so hard.
-
- finish スキップとローファー(9 eps)
-
- watch more of おジャ魔女どれみ
-
- Finish the first madoka recap movie (I prefer it over the series)(about 4 eps)
- aim for an hour minimum of study time which I had dropped since the move.
For this week
- started wk level 42
- finished 3 volumes of manga (related to the book clubs)
- most of my time was spend reading more of かがみの孤城 and memories off. One thing that is annoying about vns is I have no way to see how far I am. I am enjoying it more than before though.
- a few eps of どれみ
stats:

- wk reviews continue. level 42 still.
- no manga, really want to knock out either memories off or かがみの孤城 first. I made some progress on both.
-
- I thiiiink I will finish the former next week. Right now I doubt I will play a second route but we’ll see. Admittedly I am skimming quite a bit but that’s less about the language and more about my interest.
-
- I am enjoying かがみの孤城. I am about 40% through, and really should have participated a bit in the book club threads oops.
-
- did I say no manga? That was a lie. I reread first chapter of hen na ie manga with my friend jp book club. Went pretty smoothly for me as by this point I read the novel and the manga both. Some people dropped out of the club because of the difficulty (we had a variety of levels of jp) but honestly? More people are sticking with it than I expected and we also have someone who decided to raed along in english.
- 4 eps of どれみ.
- I didn’t track very strictly but I think I hit 1 hour japanese time in all but one day this week.
I am thinking of ways to improve how I spend my free time. I realized recently I spend more time just scrolling than I realized and I constantly feel like I have no time for anything. Not even talking about japanese here but even more low effort hobbies like gaming and reading (in english).
Some steps I took
- turned off my youtube history so I don’t get any recommendations at all. I also unfollowed a lot of channels. Basically anything I am not actively excited to watch and is not in a target language got unsubbed from.
- added an extension to limit my time on social media sites. 30 mins bluesky and 30 mins reddit max for examples I use most. I wish instead of sites individually I could group them together and give 30 mins total or something. I found I never really hit the limit since I started using it but just knowing its there is useful to stop myself from going on random rabbitholes.
- Besides that I think most of my “wasted time” is spent on discord but I decided that’s fine since it’s mostly spending time with my friends or for looking up language resources. Still might limit it to an extent since I have a habbit of keeping it open all day. Maybe close it whenever I am not actively using it instead of just minimizing it would make me check it less at least.

Oh - my friend just mentioned that to me the other day. What do you think?
I had no idea you could do this, good to know!
Yeah, I put a 30 min limit on all my social media (not counting here, WK, or Discord), and it’s mostly resulted in me barely using those apps… tho sometimes I hit it on fb. It’s very refreshing actually… I was stressing myself out a lot b4. It’s nice to have the time back!
I am watching the 2nd season currently. Here is what I wrote about the first season on anilist
Really charming show with a strong cute-witch aesthetic. It veers younger and more slife than most other sailor moon derivatives, it also has a younger cast. The characters, besides in one off episodes, aren’t overly concerned with getting a boyfriend which made most other magical girl anime unberable to me at the age i was their target audience. The show mostly concerns itself with solving rather mundane problems of it’s ensemble side cast. While it has it’s obvious toy props they never really take over the show. When the gimmick of “bad cards” were introduced, I was afraid that would be the rest of the show as it’s a very easy product to sell I imagined. But it felt like it came up at a reasonable pace afterwards, and the focus was still on the kids life and friends.
The characters are fun, with Onpu being an obvious stand out. She comes around more than half way through and steals the show completely. She was my favorite as a kid too, as well as all my friends. She really is the best even as an antagonist.
The 2nd season has a gimmick where they’re taking care of a baby which I don’t love. However it also focuses on mother-daughter relationships in general which I found interesting. It focuses on how hard raising a child actually is and how mothers are also flawed human beings. This isn’t something I’ve seen much in a kids show. For example there was an episode where one of the characters mother overbearingly pushes her own interest onto her, this is obviously solved with her stopping doing that but it is also empathetic on why she acts that way without saying it’s ok. I think this is something useful for kids and as someone who had to move in with my mother even a good reminder to myself.
That’s helpful thx! It sounds a little interesting, and I found a few clips on YouTube (less than I expected). It seems cute, but not the sorta thing I’m generally drawn to. My friend mentioned it, cuz he said that was where he first became aware of Kansai dialect (he doesn’t speak JP), and also iirc that it’s less battle heavy?
Anyway I’ll add to my maybe list for now, I guess
It’s the same for me actually I couldn’t understand what one of the characters were saying so I went on read/watched some kansai-ben focused stuff and came back to it. I didn’t do a deep dive into it like you I am happy just understanding it.
Oh - fun coincidence! I first (knowingly) ran into it in NEW GAME! 1 | L25 and 雨でも晴れでも 1 | L24 (MC is from mountains around Osaka, and it’s a major story element), which I read like a week later
I’d already watched the former with EN subs, so it wasn’t too bad
- wk level 42. I’m done with the kanji and only vocab left in the level. Though this week I have been very inconsistent with reviews. I actually had almost made up my mind and quit but then I ended up in a waiting room with nothing to do but anki reviews. I do feel like it’s very useful but it’s also the most boring part of my day. I dropped the desired retention further
Maybe I will quit once I hit 45 but just today I had to look up several kanji that turned out to be in the 50s of wk… - Read more of memories off and eventually skimmed through to the end. It is just way too long for how much I enjoy it. I consider myself done with it fwiw.
- Re-started ふゆから、くるる. Really enjoying it so far, it’s a bit…absurd but the setting is interesting and I’m intrigued where it will go. Still very early on hopefully I’ll continue liking it. No way to really judge how far I am into it (though I know I didn’t go past where the demo ends at least). Going my cg completion rate 9% but…not exactly a healthy way to judge. Also got a bad ending and 3 cgs were exclusive to that.
-
- also watching lets play of the same by this channel after I am done with the portion. They only played through the demo though and I’m almost out of content. I find their commentary ok and voiecs not annoying. And it’s good to have confirmation that yeah the vn is wild it’s not me misunderstanding things. They have a ネタバレ video as well which I assume is about the full game so I guess I’ll watch that when I am done.
- かがみの孤城 around 85 percent through. Kind of slow and repetitive but interesting enough that I want to continue. I wanted to like it more than I did though and I do want to be done with it soon.
- not sure if I hit 1 hour everyday but I’m sure my total averages out to more than 1 hour per day so it’s fine.
- joined a 百合 jp discord server… I understood more than I thought I would as someone with little experienec reading casual convo that was nice. I ended up reading a bunch of random threads…but doesn’t seem too active. Also mostly seems to focus on whatever is popular like watanare right now which idc for. So not sure how much I will keep on reading.
- absolutley no anime whatsoever. Idk what to do about this lol…I really want to finish some series in my list I just would rather read basically everytime. It feels like watching stuff just takes more energy and attention (not exclusive to japanese just how I feel generally).
I noticed Jiten finally added user accounts so I made one. Really appreciate that it just let me import known words from anki it feels like much less work than jpdb just thanks to that. It is nice browsing through the media tabs and seeing how much coverage I have. Also lets you select a certain frequency of words as known (I set it to up to 3000 as known: what I did is go on the page of some works I read/am interested in and sort by global frequency…and find a cut off point after where not known words started popping up).
Obviously still not exactly accurate but it gives me a good starting point. Currently jiten things I know around 7000 words. Which sounds about right I guess?

This is the sorta thing that got me back into SRS… Doing it for small in-btwn periods, when I didn’t have something better to do. But…
Fwiw I stopped at L55, cuz I was just burnt out of it, and the kanji felt increasingly irrelevant, and I decided I was better off using the time to actually read. Which worked well enough for a while.
Now that I’m looking at them, and am reading at a higher level, I actually see most of the 50s ones often enough (some less often). There’s only a few that I almost never see… But at the time, I think it was a good choice to drop.
Glad I dropped it when I did, tho I enjoyed your commentary. That reminds me, I should put up a vote thread
I’m both interested, and really not wanting to see more of that cursed series
Any chance you could send the details or an invite? Is it a book club or something?
I’m very “just go with the flow” with this sorta thing. Also I drop things from Natively, if I’m stalled on them. If they’re important enough, I’ll pick them back up at some point - but otherwise they become mental clutter in the meantime
I’ve been meaning to do that. And yeah, I love jpdb, but the initial phase of getting all your words in was really agonizing. Tho the mark WK words as known feature helped
A note on the jpdb import on Jiten: it will only pull words from your currently active decks. So I had to re-add all the decks I’d been doing until last month. It winds up with very different stats tho…
Jpdb words known: 25331. Learning 6456
Jiten (incl suspended, no blacklist or due): 17126 words 45659 forms
Jiten (incl suspended & due): 22852 words 60861 forms
Not sure what to make of that… But at least the coverage feature will be more helpful now
The Anki import is too 1つずつ for me to both with, since you can only do 1 deck at a time, and have to select the field and all
Always nice to have that
seems like a cool channel, though none of the games are familiar to me.
My issue is that I seem to not remember kanji without targeted studying. I was reading books while looking up extremely basic stuff like 先生 before wanikani. I was studying for years at this point I definitely saw 先生 1000s of times. It just never stuck to my brain. WK was a huge game changer for me (stuff like rtk didn’t work…if I don’t learn kanji → vocab right after it feels too abstract and ı forget it immediately).
I am thinking of pausing it at 45 maybe but I feel like I will end up coming back and regretting I stopped.
Not a book club, just a yuri server that happens to be in jp (they have a channel forenglish speakrs as well as korean and chinese though). I think I only encountered watanare a lot because it’s what’s currently airing/popular. I feel like it will pass when something new airs.
You can find the server by just searching yuri-jp in the discover section or * https://yuri.tax/
Oh I have no problems dropping things, I genuinely want to watch this stuff it just never happens I always end up preferring reading. I veeery occassionally am actually in the mood to watch anime (or tv shows movies etc…just not my preferred medium I prefer to read). Kind of can’t be helped as a preference but also annoying to me when there is so much stuff I do want to watch in theory.
I only used my wk deck which doesn’t have that much vocab (I think in total around 6000 words? and I am about 3/4 through so more like 4000) and then added stuff via the frequency list.
I’m not surprised by the huge difference though you have read more than me by several orders of magnitude 先輩
I will probably watch more of it though they never post complete games. They also have some spoiler netabare videos of stuff I already read like ever17 which I want to watch.
Mm, that’s the other thing that got me started back on SRS a few months ago… some kanji & words do stick without SRS, but others would just be forgotten everytime
余計なアドバイスなら feel free to ignore it…
I guess my question is whether you get a ton of reviews from older levels, requiring you to spend more time on WK, thus increasing boredom. WK was also a game changer for me, but overload from old reviews got so exhausting. (ちなみに if I ever wanted to complete L55-60, I’d have to do 4.7k reviews first… never happening
)
If that’s the case, my thought is that kanji + vocab can also be done in jpdb by turning kanji on, and adding the new/weak vocab to a deck (though I prefer using the pre-made decks, since the vocab is all recent or soon-to-be-seen words). You could also add by kanji, and then go to the kanji pg & add some words with it from there.
Maybe pause for a short time? Like a week or two?
I can’t wait lol. 私を食べたい、ひとでなし is out in a few weeks.
Nice! I joined & already got a rec for 今日はまだフツーになれない【イラスト特典付】 | L27 (as a 関西弁が出る百合漫画) ![]()
Gotcha, that is also my default… but not quite as one-sidedly. Also when I’m too tired/lazy to read, anime is nice, cuz it requires less brainpower. My JP teacher also prefers to read manga over watching things btw, cuz it’s faster for her (definitely not for me tho)
I did which is why I decreased my desired retention by quite a bit. That way I get fewer reviews and idc if my retention on anki is that high since it doesn’t raelly translate to being able to read in the wild necessarily.
I don’t really like jpdb but I thought of just focusing on mined vocab instead but idk…Whatever I do will probably be on anki as I enjoy the versatility (which is why I use the WK deck instead of site)
My current status somehow ended up being: do the reviews when you can but don’t stress over being consistent every single day… which seems to work generally sometimes I do half the reviews sometimes all…rarely none… I want so see how I’ll like this in the longer run I might still pause.
Ah right, sry will keep in mind for the future. So same sentiment about the pre-mades, but with jiten decks + Anki then. As an aside, the one thing I prefer about Anki is that you can do reviews for one deck at a single time
Mining is cool, cuz you’re reinforcing what you recently saw. But it can be a bit too variable too. I think it’s nice for like if you’re doing a series and likely to see repeat vocab, or reading something very gradually
Cool, good luck with it either way
Maybe what I’ve been trying out recently ties into this. For Anki I’ve created a separate Kanji deck which is setup in the Migaku Kanji GOD (what’s in a name) extension as a recognition deck. This is one of their only extensions that still works for free in Anki.
You can set up in such a way that it extracts all the data from your current vocab decks so that for each kanji card you’ll have all your current vocab that contains that kanji present!
Whenever I have a word in my reviews or new cards for which I’m not too sure about the kanji I can have the extension create a set of cards for all the ‘primitives’ and the kanji itself, which include all the words in my vocab decks that include these kanji. There are RTK style stories included on the back of the cards, but they are from that one site I don’t know the name of, which means sometimes they are kinda…
As an examples, it creates cards like this:
Front:
Back:
The words below the kanji (and the ones marked in blue) are all words in my vocab decks containing this kanji.
There is also a possibility to create production cards, but I’ve never tried those.
It might be worth a shot if you only want to use Anki. I’m still trying this idea out myself, so I can’t really say how effective it is.
Koohi.cafe probably
I’m aware of this add on and am considering it when/if I stop using the wk deck and move on to the mining deck. however I read that it doesn’t work with recent updates from some people but doesn’t look like the case for you.
I don’t know if this is just the regular kanji koohi from back in the days or a new offshoot, but they’re from kanji koohi, I think. I personally don’t really mind it, but some of the stories can be a bit distasteful to some people, unfortunately.
I’m on Anki 25.02.4 (Qt 6) (I updated my workflow this year from a really old Anki version with the free old Migaku extensions to the new Anki and FSRS algorithm), which is a couple of months old and it seems to work perfectly so far. I’ve seen those complaints as well, but I tried either way and it is working. ![]()
Ahh yeah… that’s what I meant. Idk what the relation btwn the two sites is/isn’t
