EBooks for Japanese Novels

Hey everyone! I’m working on an article about getting into reading Japanese novels and wanted to suggest some options for ebooks but don’t know what options are feasible for people outside of Japan because I live in Japan.

Does anyone here buy ebooks? Where do you get them and how easy was it to set up (especially if you don’t live in Japan)?

This is a good place to start I guess:

I personally stopped using Amazon due to DRM, customer support drop in quality and censoring concerns, so I moved to Kobo/Rakuten.

Yeah and if you want the filtered list of ebook providers - here.

From my impression of the folks here, bookwalker is by far the most popular, not sure what’s after that.

Speaking of Bookwalker, I heard there were some issues recently where they forced international users onto the EN page even if they wanted to use the JP page. Anyone know if I’m remembering that correctly?

Hmmm, I always go to https://bookwalker.jp/ and I’m not forced anywhere else

(On the contrary, in the most recent update the Bookwalker App switched to all-Japanese for me )

The original issue was J-Novel Club/M12 acquired the English bookwalker and the merger forced that and Bookwalker JP to be separate, and for ppl to have to migrate stuff.

I haven’t heard of that specific issue, except maybe with the play store, bc it auto-pulls your location to figure out what to direct you to. Idk tho

I’ve continued to use JP bookwalker without issues

Mine have all come from the UK Amazon store but most have been azora titles for ebooks. I rarely read digital though but I did have issues setting up accounts on Japanese sites so use my standard Amazon account in the UK.

I think I can purchase ebooks from Bookwalker or CD Japan though, I just haven’t as of yet.
