Flesh & Blood novel - Informal Club - Now Reading!

Yep, casual! We could honestly probably remove the start date poll if people wanted; I’m not about to start taking names or anything.

me too!!!

this is where I was at :pirate_flag:

Looking forward to this… though don’t have nearly enough vocab studied yomitan to the rescue…

Summary

not sure who is all over on renshuu either but some how the club over there has 25 members…the member list isn’t something the owners can see so don’t know how many people are actually reading vs just joining up … we don’t have 25 people over there reading with us do we? :exploding_head:

I plan to, in the next couple of weeks, get things setup now that the groups on renshuu are open out of beta (mostly) … in the meantime pirate shiritori has going strong

I already got my digital version and read ahead on all of my other book clubs, so it doesn’t really matter when we start.

I did give up on vocab study with over 600 terms left so lookup life it is :joy:

My physical copies arrived  Looking forward to start reading this.

I also want to try out Renshuu for this. Thank you @shuly for setting this up. How does a study group work over at Renshuu?

Also a heads up that if any Korean learners (like @monace) wanted to join us, the first twelve or so volumes of F&B were translated… (Physical only as far as I know? Sadness.)

First three pages of my Korean physical copy

Why was I convinced that Flesh and Blood was a manga?? Probably because of the “first 12 volumes were translated” thing… What do you mean “first 12 novels” of a novel series… That’s wild
I’ll see if I can find the first few pages in Korean to get an idea of the level, it seems pretty high for me. But I might be stalking the discussion in here either way :eyes:

How come you have the Korean physical version there?

Are you studying both?

There’s also a manga version

I guess I shouldn’t mention マリア様がみてる | L30 (which has fan translations for most of the 37 volumes)

Oh my bad, I thought the preview @eefara posted was the Japanese version. I’ll have a look then

:upside_down_face:
The Japanese literary world is a scary one for sure.

I like collecting different language versions of books I like. :3 It’s a bad habit, haha; I’m not studying Korean. (I also have some volumes in Mandarin.)

There isn’t. There is a JP drama CD adaption, however.

Ok so there’s and audio manga. j/k

Interesting that multiple of us thought there was a manga tho :joy:

Light novel series tend to be pretty long generally I’d say.

details below

Well the official thing is really here on natively… renshuu was developing study groups, it’s been a thought for some time and they did a beta thing and I thought why not start a bookclub over there and see what we can do with it…

so officially unofficially…the primary is here renshuu is a test run for future bookclubs, it wasn’t meant to be the primary (because if it failed or didn’t work out - it wouldn’t matter too much)…

renshuu is a nice free option so feel free to sign up give it a shot… you can join us… pirate shiritori is active (words don’t have to be pirate themed was just for fun) … I have had to cheat a little and look at the vocab for some but now I’m out of a few words in the vocab list that start with certain hiragana LOL… there is a small posting area and I put the vocab list into renshuu so you can study it if you like.

I do need to create some polls and questions and there is supposedly a beta community list thing in the works that I haven’t toyed with yet. Originally don’t think it was supposed to be a thing but a lot of users were asking beyond just me…so have to look into that. But was hoping that could work for building out community vocab and community sentences (and even grammar - they have separate grammar lists)…

Ideally would like to have it so we could build group vocab/sentence lists kind of like how we use sheets but will need to set that up - haven’t done it yet  readathon and other distractions…

all of this is brand new, untested in a bookclub format… so have fun with it…see how it goes… if we find bugs we tell them, if we find something that doesn’t work, could use improvement or whatnot…we can make those suggestions…this is really a new feature of renshuu.

Not sure if that clears any of it up but give it a try…In the next week or two I plan to see about getting the last bit of things setup and clean up some of the beta things we had tinkering.

I’m gonna put forth a slightly different take on this. Renshuu wasn’t meant to be the primary
cuz I organized a club on Natively, and not on renshuu - which most ppl here are not a users of.

Obviously if ppl wanna use renshuu’s new features, and if renshuu users who aren’t on Natively wanna read Flesh & Blood that’s cool. And of course folks from there are welcome to join here. But it doesn’t really have anything to do with this club any more than when there’s a comparable club & vocab list on the WK forums, or than jpdb or another external tool does.

If you do, I can add it to the OP. I’m also gonna add a Google doc of names & readings that anyone can update as we go.

If you wouldn’t mind keeping the long renshuu meta under details tabs in the future, that would be appreciated, since it’s off-topic for most of us.

was not my intention to move anything away from here or make renshuu primary (apparently that wasn’t clear…)

apologies …
won’t share anymore info here about that side of things so not to upset the apple cart

those resources, if anyone choses to use them, will remain isolated/standalone just as if they were a wk bkclub or something

For names, we’d really only need two, as the vast majority of character names in this series are in katakana.

@shuly No worries. I get there weren’t any bad intentions. I don’t mind if you share, just keep it under details, so interested folks can read, and others can skip

Now there’s a shock! The book went and stole my thunder :high_voltage: real good :joy: I feel so useless now lol. Otoh I guess that means I can just add two names to the OP, and call it a day

:joy: Sometimes I find a story that looks nice and then I discover they have sooo many volumes and was wondering whether I had karma for only stumbling across those but it seems it is not that rare but more quite common.

I talked about this novel series and bookclub with a family member today and they immedietaly idenfitied from the covers of the first three books who the main character (POV character) would be :joy: I don’t think I would have been able to

The best quotes from my boyfriend on this subject:

“Wow these look like completely unrelated books the more you scroll! You need to read up to vol 24 and tell me who these pretty Jojo characters are”

“Is this red-head a new character or is it the guy from the vol 1 cover? It’s a different guy, right? Right???”

“These are such bodice-ripper covers, the whole esthetics is there” (I didn’t know what that was, why did he lmao)
