Dashboard gripe: going to a page in another Natively language takes you to that language dashboard forever.. sometimes I want to follow a link to a book from the forums, and then I’m stuck in that language until I manually change back. I’d love a “primary language” that it reverts back to unless I personally hit the language toggle.
@shitsurei @pm215 You reported / commented this, and I know this is a big bug and I’m working on it.
My current plan is as such:
- Each media (book, movie etc) knows its language and uses it for language-specific information (e.g. to display “Manga” vs. “Manhwa” vs. “Comic”).
- This doesn’t influence anything else on the site.
- The dashboard has a language toggle which will remember its setting, and whenever you go to the dashboard, it will use that setting (to display the things you’re reading/watching, for the forums feeds and for the activity feed) until you change it.
Is that what you have in mind as well?
Yeah that sounds great to me!
I’d also add that it’d be nice if the language toggle was an easy/quick toggle..I’m starting to use a second Natively language and it’d be nice if the language toggle was a quick switch.

Sorry i’m just jumping in here so late @shitsurei and @nikoru. What would we think about this instead:
→ Go to Korean book, website is in Korean
→ Go to your Dashboard
If Korean is one of your languages:
→ Show Korean Dahboard
If Korean is not one of your languages:
→ Show ‘Primary’ language Dashboard
That behavior would be a one-line change from today, so very easy to do. We could also replicate it on the profile pages for consistency.
I must say I am very very opposed to messing around with users’ choices. I for one would be annoyed if my Dashboard kept changing languages just because I clicked a book in another language.
(And actually, wouldn’t that reproduce exactly the buggy behaviour we are currently fighting against? 
)
I’m not opposed to implementing it this way, it’s just another thing to track. If we like your proposed way a lot more, let’s do it

It seems my dashboard has decided to be German, forever 
I think it started when I visited a user’s profile whose primary language was German, but it’s not even on my language list so it’s odd that it’s prioritizing German now instead of the ones I’m actually learning, or anything I set manually.
If I change my language on the dashboard to e.g. French, and then follow the links from the dashboard to a browse page, I can browse in French, but going to any other language-variable page from there (back to the dashboard, switching from book to video search) resets to German again.
update: I stopped it from defaulting to German by going to another user’s profile whose main language is French, but now everything just resets to French instead. So my dashboard seems to just be absorbing the language of whoever’s page I last looked it and refusing to let it go.
If you toggle the language via the header language toggle.. does it not update and become sticky?
I have the header toggle turned off in my account settings, so my only option is the toggle on the dashboard, which doesn’t persist after if I’m more than one page removed.
I think the non-persistence of the dashboard toggle just started within the last couple days, though. I don’t recall user profile languages continuously overriding my set language this extremely before.

I’m so sorry but I had to laugh out loud when I read this - what an amazing life hack 
I have a feeling that this issue might be a very unfortunate side effect of the current very mixed state between old and new ways of handling things…
My hope is that the release of the new dashboard will improve the situation somewhat, but it might take another 1-2 weeks (depending on user feedback and general Life™ things)… If it doesn’t get better for you after the new dashboard is live, I promise I will dive into the old code and fix it for you. 
Modern problems require modern solutions
It’s a more creative fix (and easier) than some of the hacks I had done in GreaseMonkey
Hopefully it’s not too messy of a fix! Overall it’s not a huge problem to me, just very weird haha, so I’m okay waiting to see if the new roll-outs end up resolving it.

Hm, some other weirdness with the language selection is it made me create a list in the wrong language, and there’s now a list of French books on my English lists page.
This happened while, with my dashboard stuck defaulting to English, I switched to French, then went to the page of a French book on the activity feed, and selected “Add to list” to create a new list straight from the book’s page. The list landed in the English section of my lists instead of the French section, even though it’s a list containing a French book, and it doesn’t appear as an option when using “Add to list” on other French books.

Could you do me a favor and turn on the language toggle for a bit and try out those things - is it still being so crazy? Does the toggle change unexpectedly? That would be helpful to know for me. Thankx!
Sure! I turned it on, but it seems to have the same behaviour regardless of if I use the header button or the dashboard dropdown to change my language. However, having the header button on gives me an indication of just when it’s breaking, so I hope this gives you some useful information.
While stuck in French, if I change the language to Japanese, the header flag correctly displays Japanese. But if I then go to a browse page, I arrive at the Japanese page as expected, but the header flag changes back to French:
While the header flag is showing French, even though I’m on a Japanese page, navigating to the other browse page or my dashboard goes to the French page.
I also tried making a list again with the same steps. Switch from French to Japanese in the header, then go to a Japanese book page to make a new list directly from that item. On the Japanese book page the header flag correctly shows Japanese, but when I’m redirected to the list creation page, the header changes back to French, and saving the list saves the list with the Japanese item in it to my French list section.
This all sounds very confusing 
I will try to look into it!
