Actually actually, while reading up on the author and so on, I realized that this book is part of the so-called 法水麟太郎シリーズ which consists of 8 short stories and two books :scream: Our book is the fifth in the series, while the St. Alexei incident mentioned in the first sentence of the prologue is the short story on position 2 in the series :flushed: and since it’s only 50 pages, I was temporarily tempted to read that one first  Or is it not important to know the exact story?

That’s an amazing edition @Belerith! It’s this edition, correct? A hefty price for a hefty tome, I suppose.

:person_facepalming: That completely went over my head as well.

Sounds like we’ll all be in good company, haha.

That’s the one! It sure is expensive, haha. I figured you paid extra for well researched footnotes, but the book itself is also very impressive. For all that it’s not a good book for flight luggage purposes I can’t bring myself to fully regret it. :joy:

Spend 5 minutes on HelloTalk and you will quickly realize it’s the latter

I haven’t read St Alexei. So far, it’s been mentioned three times (twice at the beginning of the prologue), but it doesn’t feel like you need to read it to understand this book. It’s more like Sherlock Holmes mentioning some past case to Watson

Ah ok that‘s a relief :+1: I think I read the first few sentences of the prologue just out of curiosity, and the story felt rather prominent there, and so I started to worry whether it might make things more complicated if I didn’t know the story. Good to know that it doesn’t seem to be the case. I‘ll put it on the wishlist for a Mushitarou book club, then

@Magyarapointe @Belerith should we go at a faster speed starting from Month 3? I’m currently at Month 2 at 19%. I should be able to catch up with month 2 by 23 October.

Prefer 1% per day schedule moving forward so that we can complete this book by year end.

If I’m counting correctly, there’s 10 weeks left between Oct 27 and January 4th, and 356 pages from the start of chapter 3 to the end. That’s 36 pages a week, give or take, which seems okay for a reading pace. Chapters won’t line up neatly, though, so it could look something like this :

Week Chapters Pages
Oct 27 - Nov 2 Chapter 3.1 + 3.2 46
Nov 3 - Nov 9 Chapter 3.3 34
Nov 10 - Nov 16 Chapter 4 40
Nov 17 - Nov 23 Chapter 5.1 44
Nov 24 - Nov 30 Chapter 5.2 + 6.1 45
Dec 1 - Dec 7 Chapter 6.2 + 7.1 43
Dec 8 - Dec 14 Chapter 7.2 28
Dec 15 - Dec 21 Chapter 8.1 32
Dec 22 - Dec 28 Chapter 8.2+8.3 44
Dec 29 - Jan 4 Catch-up ? ?

It seems doable from a reading stand point. HOWEVER, even though I’m reading ahead (I’m somewhere along chapter 4 right now), I won’t be able to keep up with the reference thread at this pace (each reference thread takes about twice the time it takes to read the chapter, and I read first because stopping all the time to actually check and write the references means I lose track of the story. So basically, time-wise, it’s as if I’m reading each chapter three times). So if you’re Ok with the reference threads being on the back-burner, yes, I’m fine with moving the speed up !
