Content warnings

Heard people say it gives off Madoka vibes, so be warned on that sense, though it’s only 1 volume so not sure how much can be in it tbh

Discussion ground rules

  • Any spoilers, for the current chapters must be behind spoilers or detail curtains. When we get further in you don’t need to hide details that were revealed in previous chapters.
  • Always mention where you are in the book when discussing, ideally by chapter so people reading different versions have a clear point of reference.
  • Feel free to read ahead if it’s exciting! But please refrain from spoiling ahead of the appropriate week
  • If you have a question about grammar, vocab, cultural things, etc - ask! That can be part of the discussion too and I’m sure some folks would be happy to help.
  • Even if you don’t read the chapter(s) in time, you are still encouraged to post in the thread for that reading once you have finished it. I advise not reading ahead in the threads as you may see spoilers.

I’ll be honest, I forgot we were reading this. Are there separate threads for each chapter, or is all conversation staying here?

I was planning on one main thread a.k.a here

I figured I’d read along with the club, since I own the manga anyway. (I bought it as a “support the author” thing having read it in English first, so I already know I like it. I will avoid spoilers for future chapters, obviously.)

Chapter zero thoughts:

Was this originally written as a standalone/oneshot? It feels like it would work that way: it doesn’t try to set up any ongoing plot.

I only realised looking at the あとがき page that the author’s name is pronounced アイニー, not イネー…

Chapter 0

I hadn’t even read the summary of this one before I started reading, and I see the premise is pretty silly in a fun way. Why on earth would you need a love grenade in this line of work!?!?!

I really liked the resolution Koharu finds for this “first case”, while the manga itself acknowledging it’s kind of a gamble.

I am interested in seeing more development on the idea of people who had died before finding love becoming cupids. Wouldn’t these people be the least qualified to figure out who are best suited for each other!?

It definitely feels like it, it wouldn’t surprise me if it was how it started.

I’m probably not going to actually read this right now. I already bought it and will likely read it at some point, but I’m in the middle of a few physical manga volumes I want to wrap up. Not to mention there are three yuri series I’m already following with new volumes coming out literally over the next week.

I read the author’s interview, and it was (kinda). It was written as a one-shot for a magazine called コミックフラッパー, but knowing that if it was popular, it would become serialized. The author was kinda pessimistic about their chances, I guess (but it did work out).

I want to apologize for my carelesness lately and not updating weeks and letting forgetting the reminders (my only excuse is that things have been hectic)

We’re technically in the middle of week 2 but if you rather I add some days to this week due to my negligence let me know!

For me, I would say no worries. I know when a week has passed and don’t need the reminder.

Week 2, Chapter 1

Not much to say. I still don’t really see where this is going. Will we see some plot with the cupids or will it be episodic missions focusing on the living?

This particular chapter was somewhat gruesome and not very fun.

Based on your comment, it seems like you mean chapter 1 (which is the correct one). I’d argue it’s about the dead rather than the living :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: I was thinking again about your comment, and let me give a less joke-y answer:

Chapter 1/ week 2

At this point (and without any spoiler of what is to come, except the title of the next chapter), I would expect both. Since it’s the job of the main character to make people fall in love, there’s going to be various missions based on people we’ve never seen before and will never see again (since the mission was accomplished). At the same time, at this point, we don’t know much about the cupids, so we will probably learn more over time (and, well, there’s the title of chapter 2).
I can provide the actual answer to your question, though, if you want.

Chapters 1 + 2

I enjoyed chapter 1 quite a bit - it’s an interesting contrast with the very light-hearted mood of chapter 0, and it’s also nice that we get right away into Koharu’s background. The manga doesn’t mention anything about it yet, but I guess it’s possible that the reason that the Love Goddess chooses cupids is based on the abilities that they show noticing the little signals of affection with Koharu seems to pick pretty well among her classmates.

I had never previously seen this technique to show something like an “otherwordly / echoing” voice but placing several speech balloons one over the other, but it surprisingly gives that effect pretty clearly:

It’s also interesting how cupids seem to have some sense of physical collision without really affecting anything around them.

It doesn’t seem pretty clear yet how sense of time differs between cupids and humans - it seems it took five years to transform Koharu into a cupid (though it seemed like an instant to her), but after her … rebirth(?) time seems to pass normally… ?

Also when they take food from the real (?) world. Shouldn’t people notice that it’s gone?

week 3

So, if she does a good job, she can become human again? But that doesn’t seem like a very strong motivation as she can’t get her old life back.

As with real world jobs, it doesn’t have to be only about the paycheck: there is also intrinsic motivation, like the desire to help others, the sense of cameraderie with your coworkers and the pride in a job well done  She was basically already doing this as a hobby before she died…

fair point to a degree. But then why even bring it up, if not to establish a goal for the character?

It’s also another chance to find love. It’s established that they can’t feel it but want to (especially when under the influence of their own supply, but still)
