As promised, here’s this week’s poll for if we want to take a break before reading chapter 8.

Should we take a break next week before starting chapter 8?

yeah my evil plan is working… been thinking about beating you by exactly 15 minutes all week long (not 14 or 16 but 15) :relieved:

not related to this but… readathon coming up… woo hoo!!!

hmm… don’t care if we take a break … but no 3rd option…

No third option. I didn’t feel like parsing idc votes into one or the other buckets this week :joy:

Wow - that was an unnecessarily mean breakup… She even slapped him for no reason :frowning:

Just to double check, 俺とデートしない? is not a thing straight guys would normally say to each other, right?

What a bizarre confession & timing, but I gather from the next few pages it’s more casual like now

I’m still bad at this… What is the reading for 触れる here?

This was so sweeeet. I love their relationship more and more, in general. Even if I still can’t figure out whether Yuiji is actually aro, or just hasn’t had his gay awakening yet. For some reason this is suddenly making me think of やがて君になる (ppl often perceive the MC as demi or something along those lines)

Yeah I knew I hated this guy the second he took that photo. Why would you ever do that?! Good luck Yamato!!

Here I am, fashionably late. Week 5 done! Is it just me, or this volume 2 immediately easier to read than volume 1?? Like, I can’t quantify how, but I opened up volume and was like, “sure, this feels normal”, as opposed to volume one’s “I need to buckle down for this”. My personal theory is that the text size is just slightly larger and color is darker on average, and my brain is happier with that?

Anyway, good week and start to the volume. I’m not a huge fan of 彰人 (I feel like he’s just a weird guy in general), but I do feel for him, with an いとこ like that.

Yeeaaah. Speaking of people who need to sit down and do some serious introspection…

Week 6 done. I was gonna move straight on to week 7 after this, but week 6 was a bit longer than I anticipated, even though my reading speed is much quicker compared to volume one, so I’ll take a break and either finish later today or do so tomorrow, I think.

Anyway, yet again I enjoyed the reading. We’ve moved away from a lot of the introspection of volume 1 and have been balancing it out with more doing here. Can you believe we got some hand-holding? It was very cute, and makes me sad it’s taken this long to get here. I’d be fine with a YamatoxYuiji pairing, and I’d be fine with Yuiji being the ace friend; I think the author will need to just pick one, but based on how the series has gone so far, it’d probably take another two books of waffling and deep thinking before anything actually gets decided.

And caught up!

Week 7

So the break-up finally happens, and our mystery photographer 土井 finally appears. Of course he’s going to out 大和 in front of the whole class. :unamused:

week 7

It didn’t feel particularly mean to me? She loves him but can’t take anymore the fact that it doesn’t feel reciprocal, so it’s over. I can relate to that.
The slap felt like she is watching too much movies and wanted to use the trope. She notes herself that it didn’t help in anyway. She could have said sorry, though.

I’m happy that we get to hear more of Yuiji’s feelings on their relationship. Just because he doesn’t like her the way she wanted doesn’t mean he was not invested in their relationship. I wish we got more details on that.

In a joking tone, it can happen.

Yeah, it’s the same thing Yuiji did to Yamato in volume 1. “I like you… as a person”. But Yamato is really playing with fire in his case.

ふれる. I’m assuming you are hesitating with さわれる? But that’s the potential form of 触る, which doesn’t match the grammar (ことができる also expresses potential).

Yeah, not only is this guy garbage, but he even isn’t good at it. That picture proves literally nothing.

Hopefully so that we can gleefully watch someone beat the heck out of him next chapter!

re week 7

For sure, it’s an overdue, and reasonably-rooted breakup. But the delivery felt very much like she was attacking & blaming him for the entire thing - and could have been much gentler about it. And why she slapped him doesn’t really make a difference to me - particularly since she didn’t apologize, and it seemed like a pretty hard also.

I sorta do too, especially since it intersects with whether or not he’s aro… but also I was happy to move on from their breakup

Yeah, that out of the blue message did not seem like a joke :joy:

Thx, it’s starting to make sense now, 多分

Yeah but it’s high school… Seems more than sufficient for rumors to start spreading, and probably some idiots will just take the claim at face value

Without the extra context that Yamato is gay, it’s probably hard to read it as anything else….

Well, plus the fact that it’s actually true. It’s really frustrating to have to lie and say you are not [insert LGBT label], so I feel like Yamato may just come out instead.

Whelp - this was about as intense as you’d expect. Seems like most of the student body is pretty awful… but at least a few aren’t

Simpler strategy would have just been to say “nope, no idea”… Or for Yuiji to just say そんな知らない or something… (Tho of course you’d freeze up in that situation)… glad the other boy showed up to break the 悪い空気

I’ve half-forgotten the character relationships. Is the Yuiji look-alike character upset b/c he’s not Yuiji’s number 1, or bc he’s not Yamato’s number 1?

Also while I doubt Na-chan’s fake dating Yamato will really help that much, it’s really sweet of her - and it was interesting seeing that Yamato helped her out in middle school, and basically just came out to her at the time.

Man - what a weird pretext for bullying

殴れるほどのことをするわけでもなく

いや、するわけある、すっごくある! Like Yamato’s getting bullied and harassed, and scorned, you even gave a long ass explanation about how the whole atmosphere of the class and stuff has worsened… far more damage than a single punch… (not that punching him would necessarily have a beneficial outcome… but still)

Yay for this 日比野 guy… also why do the rest of these idiots have no brain? You’ve been on the team w/ him this whole time, and nothing remotely happened - to the point where you never would have guessed he was gay

Yuiji’s mom was so sweet, and I’m glad 小豆 could be there for Yamato

That hug at the end… すっごく激しくて悲しい… I’m glad Yuiji was there for him as always

chapter 8

I’ve tapped out and I’m now just reading the scanslation and I still half the time don’t know what’s going on, so at least it’s not my Japanese, this manga is just confusing. I could probably go back to Japanese with this knowledge, but I have a much higher tolerance for frustration in English. :joy:

Mostly this chapter makes me sad. I can’t even see a clean resolution out of it, no matter what happens. I hope things get better, but we’ve kinda talked around everything in the previous chapters and yeah. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Re chapter 8

Hmm I just read the scanlations for the chapter, and can’t say my impression really changed in any way. I also have higher tolerance for ambiguity with English, due to higher proficiency, and less interpretation involved.

I checked reviews on Bookmeter, and didn’t see anyone there write about it being confusing. So I still wonder if some of it is a genre thing for me (maybe I’ll have to read more BL to find out?)

“Eventually the rest of the school gets tired of it and moves on. Meanwhile he and Yuiji get closer, and maybe he solidifies some friendships” seems like the most optimistic outcome

It does make me sad that the two guys were like “we don’t believe you’re gay, just act normal” and not “we don’t care if you’re gay or not, you’re alright” - but (along with all the other reactions) it was realistic

I’ve read a lot of BL and this is the first one that’s given me this type of trouble, even for books above my reading level.

but also…

Simpsons Join Us GIF

I think this was the one that was saddest. Like, ok man, thanks I guess :woman_shrugging:t4: . In some ways it feels like it would be even more alienating than to have people reject you for being gay…

For what it’s worth, I don’t have trouble distinguishing between characters and who is doing what, so I don’t think its inevitable here. Maybe it’s a lack of practice with same-face-syndrome (looking out for other hints like hair/accessories/speaking & clothing style and the like)? Since I assume we’ve all got practice with the medium manga regardless of language that it’s not that.

I kinda want to make anki cards for everyone’s names and faces :joy:
