EN blurb (DeepL)

[DeepL Translation - needs review] Volume 1 Introduction: The story takes place in the modern era at the “Army Girls’ Childhood School,” a school for training female officers. Inudo Shinobu, a girl from the countryside, meets an overbearing senior student, Kagami Fujino, as soon as she enters the school. Despite her high-handed attitude, Kagami sometimes shows kindness only to Inudo. Inudo finds himself drawn to Kagami, but …

Story elements aside, I’m finding it a pretty easy read, and mostly just have to look up the setting-related words, which is not as dense as I was worried. My only other series with any meaningful military presence so far has been 鋼の錬金術師 | L29 - which is much more vocab heavy in general

Ch 1 thoughts

So far I’m not very into this… I knew the setting was gonna take a bit to convince me, so I’ll still give it time on that front… but I could really do without the “oh, I just suddenly noticed this character is beautiful” + nonconsensual touching… particularly after the bath scene (which I was already like “why is this girl not just washing herself?”)

Ch 2 thoughts

This chapter was easier to get through, and I enjoyed the scenes she had with Miharu a lot. I still don’t like the environment, but it will be interesting to see how Shinobu handles this whole being forbidden to go out thing, since I’m sure she doesn’t want to risk upsetting Kagami

Ch 3 thoughts

This chapter was a bit sweeter, tho I really wish Shinobu didn’t have to be so terrified all the time. I liked the way Kagami used her to get out of the getting screamed at situation, and was glad she didn’t freak out at her, and instead was supportive when she found out about Shinobu being grounded. It was nice that she was clear that her intent was just to spend the day w/ Shinobu either way. I still dunno that I could say I like her (or the setting), but it’s not offputting to an extent that I don’t want to read.

What’s up with Miharu(?) eavesdropping at the end though?

Ch 4 vocab & thoughts

Can’t quite figure out what 楨幹 is supposed to be.

軍人勅諭の - Imperial Rescript to Soldiers and Sailors (1882)

言を践行ひ ふみおこなひ = ??

That is quite the word… But also it really is the vibe in this manga, and that’s part of what’s made me uncomfortable. Also this is probably part of why it doesn’t really have an S-relationship vibe to me so far. That and the fact that there really hasn’t been much bonding or pining I guess. It just feels like someone training an apprentice/intern at their job basically.

Actually (slight spoiler for something clarified in vol 2): 稚児 is actually their word for the 姉妹 relationship

Somebody’s remembering about the kissing rumor

I loved how transparent Kagami is, and always enjoy the もらっちゃってもいいのかしら type lines. Also the whole “there’s rumors about her amongst the upperclassmen, and someone might snatch her” thing is at least somewhat an S trope

I really wish Kagami would stop taking things out on Indou tho

Miharu’s deal is that she has a mega crush on Indou, right?

Ch 5 thoughts

Indou isn’t totally dense

Loved the snake moment. Nice that she’s teaching her how to cook. Omg now she wants to capture the boar?! This girl’s nuts!!

Um WOW! things just got interesting in multiple ways. Also wow that was fast with that 告白 about the family stuff, and then the kiss!! I do appreciate that it didn’t become a “we got interrupted and missed our chance, and it won’t come up again for another 4 chapters”.

It was nice to see them have an actual substantive conversation, and also just straight ask & tell each other things, instead of having that drag out like a lot of other yuri.

The family stuff is interesting. The aunt seems pretty well off, and I guess Indou’s mom is dead. It seems weird that Indou knows almost nothing about her tho, while at the same time her aunt supposedly educated her just for the purpose of getting in here. Something’s not adding up.

(I keep wanting to call Indou “Mikoto” and Kagami “Nekozaki” from 雨でも晴れでも lol)

Overall thoughts: I’m very mixed so far, and the vocabulary gets a bit more annoying as it goes. It would be great to pre-study SRS for this stuff… which I technically could do, but I have enough other vocab I’m doing rn. Chapter 5 got me interested to keep reading for now. Tho I might break to finish other stuff first. Edit: the beginning of vol 2 just shot my respect for the author up a lot

I found what seems like an interesting article here: Yuri and the Nature of History- A Love Letter for the Marching Puppy/ Goodbye, My Rose Garden | by 李佾學 | Medium - but it assumes you’ve read all 5 volumes. I read a bit of it, but will have to come back to it later.

chapter 1

I wonder waht the mcs (already forgot her name - I was reading last night) home situation is. She just seems so much worse off than anyone else in the school, extremely poor, had no one accompany her to the first day etc. She seems to think fondly of her guardian (grandmother I think? again, forgot by now) but it’s odd she sent her off alone. The reasoning of why she wanted to enroll also feels a bit like she wanted to get rid of her. So I’m wondering if it’s a genuinely poor family or if she was treated badly and then told go to this school its got free food (and our mc is too naive to realize).
It’s possible she simply couldn’t afford it coming along but, I don’t know know I got bad vibes.
Now in all likelihood this won’t matter at all and I’m vastly overthinking it but, this is what my mind focused on over any of the character interactions.

Also, on a less serious note, I think our mc does NOT look puppy-ish enough.

You’ll eventually find out a bit more, but tbh the seeming unrealism of the beginning is part of what started me off on the wrong foot… I rolled with it as “ok, typical ridiculous story hook that will be irrelevant after this chapter”. I assume her relative just had a job, or was poor and older, or couldn’t travel or something, but the girl’s like 13-14? And she’s just wandering the country like that? Idk I found it hard to buy

Actually I agree. She doesn’t really stand out from the other characters to the extent that I’d expect

I know it’s premature to ask now, but on the off-chance there’s interest in going beyond book 1, I’m going to continue posting my thoughts on future chapters here. I’ll just say, the beginning of vol 2 shot my respect up quite a bit, and I’m more convinced I want to read the story now. Update: yeah I liked vol 2 more

Ch 6 thoughts

I was really impressed with the portrayal of 犬童’s reaction to the kiss. It wasn’t just the usual flustered, but like there’s that touch of trauma and insecurity, like Kagami just really uprooted things for her. It was an unexpected, forceful act, without her consent - basically claiming her - and you can see that in her reaction.

I appreciate Ooba for the fact that she’s trying to talk sense into Kagami, but also don’t like the fact that she’s just taking at face value that their relationship is ok, considering how obviously not ok Indou is. I do agree with her that Kagami is being selfish by not doing the 稚児 thing… Basically キープする. I wonder if tm well actually see other upperclassmen make a pass at Indou.

Also wtf is up with her roommate?? Why is everyone in this place so eager to abuse? Also I didn’t get if she was upset cuz of the assembly, or bc of the interaction with Ooba - but if the latter, then wth?

Ch 7 thoughts

Oooh no, someone plz explain to this girl what the 稚児 system actually is!! Also my guess that Hasebe is jealous over Ooba seems likely.

Oh yay, Kagami clarified that she’s not her 稚児, and then continued to act possessive, as if she were her 稚児… Cuz that’s not gonna send mixed messages. I loved that Indou slapped her away

ch 8 thoughts

99% sure that person dragging Indou away is Kagami’s mother. Interesting that Kagami is お嬢様. Miharu is adorable, and such a great friend

ch 9 thoughts

Indou!! You don’t just go giving away people’s personal details like that!! Guess it was 人違い tho. Guess it wasn’t her mother at all

Can’t help but think of the stereotypical fixing the tie thing, but it doesn’t match the ribbon here. But now they both have their hair tied back

Poor Miharu getting totally left behind

ch 10 thoughts

Russia girl was annoying, but useful plot device, and interesting story. Also holy shit, she’s Shinobu’s おばさん?! I thought she looked the same at the beginning of the shower, but still!!

Also Shinobu catching feelings for Kagami… idk if I find it convincing just yet

Vol 3

ch 11 thoughts

Interesting that かがみ can mean “mirror”, and Kagami’s behavior/thought mirrors her mother’s

ch 12 thoughts

Ahh the necessary conflict and confrontations that will probably lead to the couple finally getting together

Still wondering whether Ooba has an interest in Shinobu. It doesn’t quite seem like it, but it doesn’t seem out of the question either. She does seem bent on getting them together tho

ch 13 thoughts

Seems like Ooba may finally be getting through to Kagami.

Miharu having the “I’m a lesbian, you probably are too” chat was really awesome - great addition!

ch 14 thoughts

I love that it goes into Shinobu grappling with her feelings more, and saying maybe they shouldn’t cuz they’re in military school, maybe it’s better if she tries to just erase the feelings, etc

Also that was my quite the 告白

ch 15 + omake

This girl seriously thought Shinobu was into. Ooba?! Like I’d get that at the beginning of the story, but 今更!?

Kagami’s response was a little underwhelming, but also beautiful in its own way… But also like “are y’all using the title or not then?!”

Also I’m getting a really bad feeling from that cliffhanger, like “here’s the unnecessary drag things out volume 4” feeling. Really hoping I’m wrong on that count

The omake was great, and confirmed that Hasebe was at last partially jealous over Ooba. I’m curious if the author put it in NYC the next volume will focus on her more, or just as a “fill in the remaining blanks” sorta deal

I’m general I like that in theory they’re supposed to say things directly. It helps the plot along with stuff like this

Vol 4

Ch 16

The “1st & 3rd years are suddenly bathing together today” for no apparent reason thing made me roll my eyes, but at least it was put to good use. I love that the characters actually communicate in this, even if one of them (Kagami) sucks at it

Also I got confused for a sec with the other girl with black hair, cuz I thought she was Kagami. It would be nice (in a spicy sense) to see the other upperclassmen actually try making some kind of move… or like some sort of action between any of the other students. To be fair, it’s not like she could do that, with Kagami right there

Ch 17

Ugh, sports + the “hurt myself running” trope… At least it was quick. And the “let’s be our best for each other” thing was fine too. Hard to read おばさん’s expression/reaction at the end

Ch 18

Oh, are we in the “switch to side couple” phase now? I hate 運動会 arcs, but they’ve made the training decently interesting. 頑張れ Miharu!!

Tho also how much can you really feel for someone you met for like a few minutes, years ago? I wonder if they’ll do something interesting, like she turns out to be totally different than Miharu imagined. Also, why does she look like she’s probably Indou’s mom or something? I’m hope I’m just misinterpreting that

Ch 19

Sports fest part 1 was enjoyable, and they actually did something interesting with the crush!! She remembered her (that seemed unrealistic tho), but she’s also engaged, but seriously gives off lesbian vibes!! And of course Miharu had to learn that the image she constructed in her head, and the real person were not the same

Ch 20

That was really cool and inspiring talk + the horseback archery, but that ending… Wtf is Kagami’s Mom up to?! Don’t trust this woman at all

Vol 5

Ch 21

That student director is so pathetic yelling at Shinobu like that. Wtf is this bullshit about either of them being unqualified?! (I mean it’s obviously related to whatever bs Kagami’s mother is pulling, but still)

Ch 22

Glad the 少佐 seems to be a decent person… And fairly quick on the uptake with that letter (well it’s a kinda obvious conclusion, but still)

Shinobu seems close, but far to figuring out whatever’s up. I’m glad Kagami is letting her stay close, and even holding hands with her

Ch 23

Interesting thing about the silver watch. Was that a custom at the time, it just something that was coincidental to FMA?

This mother is unbelievably vile and terrible to her daughter… So it sounds like she’s grooming Shinobu in some way - at least in her own warped mind

ch 24

Had a feeling that’s where this was going. I feel bad for Kagami that she’s been blaming herself this whole time, but also seriously her mother is horrible and abusive - on top of the creepy grooming. Anyway it’s obviously not Kagami’s fault

I’m so glad Shinobu is the sensible one here, and had the clarity to tell Kagami that none of this is on her

Ch 25

I don’t understand how Kagami and Shinobu never met when they were younger then. Also regardless of the whole taking her in thing, in amazed Shinobu can feel comfortable around her

The end of the chapter was sweet. And I really wish Kagami would still comparing herself to her mother, bc they’re really barely alike

Also how is it that the school is fine with disrupting the lives of 8 students, by switching their model student ppl, at the whim of someone who hasn’t been in the military for years, and seemingly isn’t supporting the school in any way. What could she have said to even convince them that there was some actual concern? It seems very nonsensical

ch 26

A sweet ending. Normally I’d complain that it ended in this fashion… But honestly, I feel like this got so much done in 5 volumes that I’m ok with it.

I finished the series. I’ll say it definitely won me over in various ways. Definitely worth the read for me. As the Class S influence/resemblance goes, I’d say it’s faint, but it’s there… I’ll have to reevaluate that, once I’ve gotten through more of the historical stuff

all of vol 1

I think my overall thoughts mirror yours: my interest started pretty low, but increased as I went on. I’ll at least check the second volume out.
Though unlike you for me the military academy was a plus, I thought it was interested and I wouldn’t mind seeing more about the lessons or life there or such. Though the vocab is a pain.
The last chapter made me wonder if Shinobu and Kagami’s age gap is not bigger than I realized? I assumed theyre 2-3 years apart because of the school setting, but things might be less standardized than that. Well, her knowing her mom doesn’t necessarily have to mean anything about age. But I assumed the mom died quite a while ago, or else how come she never met her mother? There is def something fishy going on with the aunt too

I’m not 100% sold on this manga but I will be starting the 2nd volume at least

vol 1 reply

It grew on me more over the next volume. It sorta depends on my mood sometimes tbh (sometimes I’m yay on “terrible ppl doing terrible things”, sometimes I’m not).

Part of it is I went in having previously heard that it’s a sweet, wholesome series, and that the military setting doesn’t make that much of a difference… Which from vol 1, I would not agree with either of those statements.

Agreed, and I’m glad you graded it too, bc I always worry about if my gradings are accurate

That’s the thing is like it has a very Age Gap vibe, and I thought so from the beginning… But the most I’ve been able to find is: that Kagami is 17 (I’m not sure if that’s reliable)

Meiji education historical background

Historical background: in Meiji era, girls had 3 years of mandatory public school education. After that middle & upper class girls might go to mission schools (controversial back then, might cover through high school) or if they could afford it, would have private tutoring in particular subjects. So it’s unclear whether the military academy had an
(you’d complete school first)… But back then, that could be anywhere after 13 iirc. Based on short googling, the age for military cadet schools (boys only) was 15-17, after which military school might be an option.

So based on that (and some stuff elsewhere), 15 & 17 seems right, if the author is being historically accurate about education ages (setting aside that military schools for girls didn’t exist). But the story itself doesn’t make it clear, and tbh I would have assumed 13 if I didn’t know any of this)

Could have had kids really late, and died in childbirth, or in the first year or two… But yeah, I also wonder about that + the おばさん

Looking forward to your thoughts on vol 2!
