Home thread for 밤을 건너는 소년 ⏱️ Korean fiction bookclub 🇰🇷 Week 10

i went ahead and finished this off last night.

Ahaha that was absolutely not what i expected. Idk if reading this all at once would have made the pieces fit together better as it went along. The pacing felt a little weird to me but it is a short book and I read it super spread out over 2 months. There was obviously sthing weird going on with 시온 we all commented on the weird ~obsession 재민 seemed to have for him and the throwing up after the burger date was super weird at the time. But Surprise! He was just using his vampire allure and not able to eat human food.

So i it turns out they aren’t really father and son, just vampire sire & fledgling. The older vampire eats people’s time at the magic shows when everyone is drunk so they think losing time is just due to the alcohol. The fledgling isn’t able to do that yet so he preys on kids at school who are bullies i guess? And he ate from 박취 before in A Town? So thats why 박쥐’s memories are messed up i guess? And also what exactly happened to the bully in A town?

So was the picture the detectives showed to 박쥐 of the bully kid? But he seen it as a cat? Is this because his brain was kind of messed up from 시온 feeding from him before? but also he had some inherent ~vampire like qualities (like the :black_cat:/ :dove: situations i assume)? This part I still feel fuzzy on to be honest. But overall I feel like i understood the story and all the other details so i’m not that bothered.

After reading the ending and the author’s note and then reflecting on the story i guess there was plenty of foreshadowing throughout, but going in without knowing the genre as a learner meant i couldn’t read the tone as well as i would have if i’d had known it was a vampire/supernatural type story from the start. All of the characters were quite unsympathetic in their own way but i enjoy stories without an obvious hero so it wasn’t a negative for me.

Overall not the story i expected based on the summary but more interesting than the standard Coming of Age type story you typically get with 청소년 소설.

Finally finished reading this and the ending was…not what I expected at all. :joy: I kept wondering what all the events of the book were building up to because some of it seemed so strange, but I would have never guessed vampires were involved??? lol, it alll kind of makes sense now, though!

All in all, it was a pretty short and easy to read book, so I had fun with it, but I did find the pacing a bit weird at times. There were lots of mysterious happenings and buildup, but the actual ending felt quite rushed in my opinion. Still definitely had fun with this though!
