Home Thread for 한밤의 시간표 🕰️🐑 Story 6

Tomorrow we will start to read the longest story left in the collection!

I should say that I read the story for last week on Saturday, and I read the story for this week yesterday. It’s pretty short. Both stories are solid.

Btw, I have made the executive decision that the next sci-fi book club, there will be no vote and I will choose the book. It will be a book that I own physically (얼마나 닮았는가) so if anyone else wants to read it, someone will have to buy the ebook. This book (한밤의 시간표) wasn’t my first choice personally, and I’m pretty sure that at least one of the people who voted for it is not reading along here, so to me it kind of feels like “what’s the point of voting anyway?”. Likewise, I’m not sure if there is anyone currently reading along who would not have read along had the duration given to read each story been 10 days instead of 14 days.

Maybe there are things I could be doing better to boost engagement, like posting discussion questions, but honestly nothing is coming to mind for these stories.

To anyone who is reading along, I’d love to see some signs of life!

Hi, I’m reading! I just fell really behind since I had to wait 2 weeks to get the book (and life in general). I just finished the third story and honestly I kind of started to get bored after a while. It felt like all the surrealism was there just to have random weirdness going on. (Or maybe I just missed something, ehich is entirely possible.) I liked the second one better. I hope I’ll get number 4 read this week, but I’ll stoll be way behind the schedule.

Also just in general. Thank you for orgonising this! It’s a huge help in finsing authors I might be interested in. You seem to know a lot about Korean sci-fi! I think it’s a good idea to orginize this book club in such a way that it appeals to you. I don’t think any other way will work long term. I’ll do my best to habg on with my patchy intermediate level Korean. Hopefully with enough reading I’ll be able to one day keep up with hhe group and actually talk about the stories beyond wether I was just partially or completely lost.

Finally made through the second story during the readathon. I started it a while back when I said I would catch up but…. got stuck

It had a lot of unknown/unfamiliar vocab (related to funerals, textile ….) and it wasn’t interesting enough for me to want to push through (I’m reading mostly in semi-intensive mode this year). It appears I stopped right when it got easier, I had no difficulty finishing the story. If the first story had this subtle “uh? something’s not quite right” uneasy feeling from the start that got me curious from the first couple pages, I couldn’t feel any originality in the second story. And it only left me with the feeling of “what was the point?“. Having the narrator reflecting the readers reaction felt cheap and didn’t help in elevating this particular story. “그게 끝이에요?” is of course what we’re all wondering, and reinforced the idea that it was simply a story not worth telling. I don’t know if “ 거기서부터 또 다른, 새롭고도 오래된 가족 드라마가 시작되었고 그것은 전혀 무섭지 않지만 또 어찌 보면 가장 무서운 이야기이다.” is supposed to be one of the moral of the story, that reality can be the most scary, but it just didn’t hit.

Anyways, I hope to catch up at some point, but this time I am not promising anything :expressionless_face:

I initially thought that short stories would better fit a paced reading club, but now I’ve completely changed my mind. With an ongoing story, even if it’s not very good, we can at least exchange thoughts on where the story is going, and there’s kind of a FOMO effect on seeing other people’s comment that makes people (well, me at least) want to keep reading along. (the downside being, having to pace oneself through one unique story)
Anyways, I don’t think there’s one good answer, and I think the organizer should organize in a way that they want to keep doing it
