I’ve definitely read/heard 발을 들이다 in native content. I’d say that for high quality translations, you shouldn’t expect much if at all “direct” translations, but there might be more or less localization for cultural aspects. Of course, if you’re not already super advanced, it’s not easy to judge the quality of the translation….

I’m far from being advanced at all  But I know what you mean. I’ve read badly translated books in a language I’m fluent in before, and it was easy to tell when something came from the English original version and when it just so happened that the same thing was said the same way in both languages. Now to get to that level in Korean :books: :woman_student:

Personally I think that sentence sounds fine, but while reading I definitely noticed sentences that were very obviously translations from English. can’t remember any off the top of my head, though!

Week 7

We are reading until the end of chapter 42. 3 more weeks to go!

A couple of thoughts on week 7:

  1. Blackmail stuff: why doesn’t Adrienne just leave?
She has plenty of money, why would she just sit at home waiting for EJ to come back after a few days?
  2. Secret room cliffhanger: yes, I like it, I finally got excited. What will Lee-sun do now that he has found the room? And will Tricia confess that she knew all along? WILL THEY DIVORCE? Probably not.

I’m not sure if anyone else is still reading along, but I am set on finishing this book one way or the other, so Week 8 it is! Final chapter: ch.48

week 5 and week 6

The romances don’t do much for me. Trisha and 이선 plot is padding it out a lot. It shouldnt take 75% of a book to get to something interesting but at least we’ve hit there and get to the end. At the very least I see a theme throughout the book that I can understand the vision for despite not liking the execution at all. this probably would have been better as a short story and with better stakes instead. all this for some slashed tires??

I like the idea of a short story, everything would have been more interesting if it had been condensed and to the point.
I still don’t understand why she slashed the tires… Even for her it seems very out of character. I guess the plot required blackmail material…

Well I honestly wasn’t surprised at all about the tires. I didn’t feel like that was the part of the plot that did not make sense. I thought there was something up with her from the first meeting with her agent, and I remember thinking she had obvious anger management issues while reading the first description of the scene at the parking lot, and was rather surprised then that nothing seemed to have happened.

Guess what everyone, it’s week 9, final week, the book finally comes to an end.

I personally finished the book yesterday, but I don’t have anything constructive to add so I won’t be posting my thoughts… I did write a review, which isn’t really positive. I just didn’t like the book, it felt like it would never end, and I won’t be reading thrillers for a while now, I need a palate cleanser

If there is interest in another book for the Korean Fiction Book Club, I’ll let someone else take over

It’s so funny how we all had the same rating. What are we going to read next?
