JFF Theater is a free online streaming platform (registration required) run by The Japan Foundation, showcasing Japanese films and documentaries from a wide range of genres.

The titles rotate on a ~monthly basis. Titles return occasionally, but there are always new and interesting titles available. The genres are diverse, showing both popular and indie titles, genres ranging from Drama, Comedy, Fantasy, Art, Romance, LGBTQ+, documentaries, and more.

We pick one monthly Featured Movie to watch and discuss together in the group, but discussions about other movies are always welcome.

「山の上ホテル」は、名だたる作家たちが集う場所。だが、なかなか芽が出ない新人作家の加代子は知っている――偉大な作家になるには努力だけでは足りない。必要なのは、したたかな策略だということを。
新人作家・加代子（のん）は文学賞を受賞しながらもデビューの機会をつかめずにいる。大御所作家・東十条（滝藤賢一）の酷評によって夢を打ち砕かれた彼女は、「山の上ホテル」へと足を運ぶ――そこは偉大な作家たちが集う場所。しかし運命のいたずらか、その東十条が真上の部屋に滞在していた。編集者の遠藤（田中圭）の力を借りた加代子は、締め切りに追われる東十条を出し抜こうと画策するが、やがて二人の対決は思いもよらぬ展開を迎える。『BUTTER』で知られる柚木麻子の小説を原作に映画化。加代子は果たして作家としての夢をかなえることができるのか。

The Hill Top Hotel is the destination of all celebrated authors. But the promising Kayoko, who cannot catch a break, knows it takes more than hard work; it also takes cunning to be a great writer.
Promising young writer Kayoko (Non) struggles to debut her work despite winning a literary award. Criticism from the respected Higashijujo (TAKITOH Kenichi) has scuppered her literary dreams compelling her to visit the Hill Top Hotel, destination of all great writers, only to find Higashijujo in the room above! With some help from her editor Endo (TANAKA Kei), Kayoko schemes to sabotage the critic, who is struggling to meet his own writing deadline, before their showdown takes an unexpected turn. Based on the novel by YUZUKI Asako, known for the acclaimed novel BUTTER, will Kayoko finally make her writer’s dream come true?

When I checked their site some years ago, the Japan Foundation only bought rights to show the movies in countries where they also had an institute for cultural exchange, as they also show the movies in their cinemas on site. But these were just 40 countries.

Therefore I‘d expect they have some geo-blocking in place.

They do, unfortunately they do not tell, only “to check from your account”. Currently, there are some Anime that are Africa-only, so I would think that for the other movies they have less restrictions in place. I heard that within Japan it might be not possible to stream, but have no one to confirm. Maybe it works with a VPN.

Format

I have a kinda middle selection, which would be having a “featured” movie that we all vote on, but also to have threads (or in the same thread if that’s where the voting shakes out) for the other movies. I can see watching whatever interested me but then also getting excited and watching things that other people are watching throughout the month as well. But it’s also fun to have something more group oriented that we all can discuss.

So tl;dr, an all of the above vote from me!

If we’re doing/including “watch what you want” and “single thread” it might make sense to have the OP or a comment be a wiki with a table/list for people’s thoughts, like:

Thanks for the suggestion! Edited in a table for user comments/reviews and made the post a wiki (I should have reserved a first reply though, it’s getting a bit messy).

Based on the poll results, I would definitely keep the free discussion for all titles, but make a poll for the most interested in titles, the winner which would receive a “Featured” or “Most Anticipated”.

Most people also voted for a single thread, which makes sense in order to keep the discussion lively and related back to other titles.

I’d not heard of this resource before, but I see some interesting titles on the list! I’ve seen カラオケ行こう before and also read the manga. Would be down for a rewatch so I can give a more detailed review. I’ve also wanted to watch テルマエ・ロマエ for a while!

Just watched it. Good movie!

I’m planning to watch the 3 movies I voted for (Mondays, The Lines that Define Me, Let’s Go Karaoke) and have finished Mondays! I am already recommending this one. it was super fun and an interesting plot!

Spoilers ahead.

The movie is about being in a time loop with your office colleagues. There was a (sort of) plot twist about half-way through which made for a really interesting and heart-warming ending. I only felt sorry for them a bit! Re-living the same week stuck in the office for almost 2 years must be torture… no wonder they gave everything to escape it!

I’m still having some difficulties with listening, but I think it is a good movie for that, since due to the time loop element a lot of scenes are basically repeating.

I’ve watched カラオケ行こ last year on a flight since it was one of the few Japanese movies available on-board (Chinese airlines).

It was alright, enjoyable and easy to follow.
The word 紅（くれない！！！！） will now forever stay associated with this movie for me.

Teen acting in Japanese movies generally feels a bit derpy to me, maybe that’s because I’ve watched very few of them, and obviously haven’t attended school in Japan either.

Finished watching カラオケ行こ! and oh boy, I didn’t expect the amount of Osaka dialect. Not gonna lie, it was VERY hard for me to follow everything and I frequently had to switch subtitles back on. If anyone finds the JPN subtitles, let me know!

I also realized that this belongs to the anime and manga with the same name, somehow I didn’t connect that at all because I thought that was a BL, and I didn’t know it was a middle schooler in the main role. I don’t know what happens in the sequel, but just from this movie, some peole are calling this BL-coded is

I don’t know how others feel about this, I generally like a good age gap but only if both characters are well above legal age when they first met.

If anything, I would have thought something happening between Satomi and his classmates from the film or choir club (who I thought were the same for half the movie … did I say I had issues following sometimes?)

That aside, I enjoyed the movie, it was a very interesting dynamic and I actually liked the acting performances quite a lot.

Netflix JP has it with JP subs. I speak the dialect, so I’ll try it via the JFF website anyway, to give them the traffic

Btw: the manga doesn’t have a romance tag, and I read multiple reviews saying it’s not. (Which is not to say there is/isn’t subtext in the film). I’ll respond more once I’ve seen it

I read the manga, and I didn’t get any romance vibes from it, but I think there’s a sequel that I haven’t read (that goes beyond the content of the movie) so I can’t speak for that one.

Oh that’s a good tip. I can usually deal with Osaka-ben (since it’s the Kansai-ben that I have the most exposure to), but I’ll jump over to Netflix if I have too much trouble on JFF…
