I didn’t have much trouble with getting used to the lack of spaces. I’m not sure if that’s a common hurdle for people, but I felt that visually parsing the components of a sentence came fairly quickly for me. Knowing what all the words mean has been the hard part.
On the other hand, I struggle to hear the pauses in speech you mention. There are times where a sentence goes by so fast that it all sounds like one word and my brain can’t separate it quickly enough. Add on to that the fact the language is very context dependent and contains a lot of homonyms.
It’s hard to not feel like reading is easier when I am completely lost in a scene and then I flip on subs and get perfect comprehension. But I am clearly biased as someone who has done a lot more reading than listening.
Thank you for your recommendations! I’ll have to check them out.
とにかく I might as well make a small learning update while I am here:
I barely did any language learning in October. I was dealing with a lot of personal stuff and it was easier for me to mentally take a break from this hobby. It’s disappointing to not make progress, but I am trying to remain positive about how far I have come and shift to a more long-term mindset.
I probably won’t be very active on here until I get back my groove back. Hope everyone has been having fun and it’s cool to see so many people sharing new learning logs lately!
