Haha thanks. I just watched ep1. Will continue the rest next time.

After two weeks of listening to this channel, I’ve gotten bored of it.
Switching to this podcast channel next week.

The Miku Real Japanese Podcast

I also listen to that podcast, it is pretty nice. Miku makes a lot of collabs with other teachers also hosting podcasts themselves so it is a good way to discover new podcasts and diversify your listening.

I finished this too even though Korean is not in my target learning language. :joy:

Yeah, I was going to say, I didn’t know you were learning Korean!
I am liking web series these days, they are short and usually not too hard. I made a list if that’s also your thing:

This week, I went searching for new 博多弁 YT channels and I struck gold by finding 一般主婦の救護室. A little-known funny female let’s play youtuber who uses a good deal of 博多弁. Her voice and manner of speech are so soothing, I love it. I think she’ll become my main source for this challenge lol.

I was actively learning Korean from December 2018 to March 2022. After that, I mostly watched Korean dramas and variety shows, and I continued with Anki until now. I still review about 20 cards a day

I prefer long daily and weekend dramas, though, because these dramas usually have good, happy endings. I was often unsatisfied with many of those 16 episodes dramas.

Btw, have you watched 김비서가 왜 그럴까 before? That was the show that made me a fan of Park Min Young and kept me highly motivated to continue learning Korean for the initial 2 years

I did watch What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim when I was getting into kdramas, but I didn’t really like it… Romance isn’t exactly my thing, so I don’t always enjoy them. Then again, some of my favourite kdramas are romance, so go figure
To echo your story, 런 온 S1 | L30?? was the show that made me a fan of Im Siwan and that kept me motivated to study when I got started, because I ended up liking so many (all??) of his shows.

Btw are you still a fan of Im Si Wan?

I’m no longer a fan of Park Min Young though

Okay; after a rather bad procession of vacation, illness, then just generally not wanting to do anything JP-related, I think I’m back in business. I’m sitting at just over 11 hours this month for listening, which isn’t as bad as I was fearing; I’m 5 hours behind pace for my normal 30 hour goal, which means 36 hours is likely going to be my big stretch goal instead of 42. My cautious 15 hour low bar I set this month should be fine, so I’ll make that 30 what I aim for in the second half of the month.

I went to an offline Japanese conversation table this week and at some point I was catching myself unwillingly throwing 博多弁 at a poor fellow japanese learner  The most obvious case was when I wanted to ask if he lived far from the café we were at and I instinctively said 遠くに住んどうと? His face was clearly puzzled  I didn’t expect 20h of listening would impact my speech this quickly. I’ve gotta learn to adapt my register according to the person I am speaking with :zipper_mouth_face:

I’ve finally finished listening to 変な家 | L28 audiobook-only! I remember starting this book back in January and having absolutely no idea what was going on. I couldn’t follow the first minute at all, and I shelved the audiobook for later.

A month or so ago I was taking advantage of the nice spring weather and needed something to listen to other than the usual podcasts, so I decided to try 変な家 again and see if anything had changed. It was shocking how much I understood the second try! Not enough to be able to follow the story in a truly coherent manner, sadly, but well enough that I could often understand multiple sentences at a time before losing track of the story. I’m not going to mark the book as Finished on Natively because of it; I want to wait until I can truly understand it. But at this rate, maybe I’ll give it another go December and see if the promised time has come. :eyes:

Was too much trouble to reformat, bc my seasonals are all mixed up (they mostly became audio-only, midway through). I’ve been getting comfier w/ audio-only anime, and honestly there’s a nice sort of thrill to starting a new show w/o subs! My non-anime hours have been almost all from 明日の世界で星は煌めく 2 L27, plus now 3 conversation-only lessons. I do get some audio from 魔法使いの夜, but not enough to be measurable.

I think I’m probably not gonna set a goal next month, and just measure instead.

July 2025 Listening Challenge is up now

Thanks! I’ll join though I’m still not sure what goals to set for July since I’m now bored with podcasts after listening to them for so many hours

Updating the total early since I don’t think I’ll manage to increase much this weekend.

Goal: 30 hours :o:
Managed to achieve the overall goal though I failed one of the categories.

  • 15 hours of video lectures from 日本語の森 - Total 4.3 hours :x:
  • 15 hours of Japanese dramas/YouTube videos/podcasts - 20.1 hours for dramas and 17.6 hours of podcasts. Total 37.7 hours. :o:

The amount of fangirl’ing for the Sonic franchise took me off guard lol. She loves Sonic so much.

I’ve had a busy week with lots of social outings (including some with Japanese speakers) and I low-key forgot the listening challenge…

If I get serious about it, I should be able to close the ~7h gap that separates me from my goal in the coming 3 days (notice the “if” at the start of the sentence).

Welp, I’ve just wrapped up a little over 6 hours of JP listening today as part of the audiothon, so I’ve hit my 30 hour goal for the month! I’m not gonna be able to hit the 36-hour step-up goal with the two days remaining, as I’ll be busy for both, so I think I’ve earned myself a little break until July.
