Hi everyone, sorry I’ve been MIA lately! I’ve been busy with work and other real life stuff and have had to deprioritize Korean for the moment. The current round of the club is rapping up, so if someone else would like to take care of organizing the next round please feel free!

I’d be open to organizing some kind of mystery club or some other harder kind of book (sci-fi, adult romance…), but I’m not sure how much interest there would be.

I also haven’t dedicated much time to korean lately, and barely did any reading for the past month or so, but I’d be up for it if it’s a pace I can manage. I was having severe eye strain issues, but I finally made my ereader korean-ready so hopefully that will help.

• 82년생 김지영 (feminist novel): Wondering if it’s gonna be too literary for me, but Kimchi Reader puts my comp at 91% which is pretty good for me personally. I’ve wanted to read it in English for a while, but reading it in Korean would be even better!
• 저주토끼 (horror / magical realism / scifi short stories): Also saw this in my local bookstore, then realized it was translated from Korean! Warning: Goodreads ppl say it’s very grotesque
• H마트에서 울다: Translation from English → KR of Crying in H-Mart by Michelle Zauner. Been meaning to read this too. Probably going to make me cry while reading

I’m intrigued by the plot, and I want to know how the dynamic between the woman with the purple skirt and the woman with the yellow cardigan works. I can’t tell by the blurb if they become friends, ennemies, competitors… I’m a relationship-driven reader

Why are you nominating this book: This is a bit of a ~risqué nomination since it’s actually an english language novel originally but I’m suggesting it because:

1. There tends to be a mix of levels in the bookclub. Translated novels are much easier and so offer a chance to read more adult fiction at a lower level
2. Freida McFadden novels are a hit in kr atm, I keep seeing them recced on korean booktube
3. Having read a couple of this author’s other books in kr already, the translations are lively and the books absolute pageturners

Many people’s personal concerns and social conflicts are melted in the faces that resemble us and voices that resemble us in 『People of People』. the words of a new writer

Before I wrote People, there was a sinkhole just a few meters from where I lived. Fortunately, nobody was injured, but a series of other sinkhole accidents resulted in deaths, and I felt anxious and concerned whenever I read related articles. I think the mourning for the victims of the local community’s accidents was the starting point of this novel. Although six years have passed and I have moved to another city, sometimes I look for more sinkholes, and I am relieved to know that they have not happened.
It’s just not been a long time, and if I had written this novel in 2021, I think nearly half of the people might have been different people. It’s fascinating that the story exists in such a flowing form, and that the flowing path gradually turns and changes. What kind of terrain change will happen when the water changes like this within that person? My head always tilts toward the day it didn’t come.
Wherever you are, or in the safety you deserve. I believe that when I first wrote this story, I believe that standing together in a solid place is the next thing.

Jeong Sei and Dream

Why are you nominating this book: This book was recommended to me by a Korean who enjoys reading. I thought that it might be interesting as a look into Korean society and that it would be a nice fit for a paced book club, being a collection of 50 stories about 50 different people (although I know some people are not into short stories). I’ve personnally had a hard time following the schedule in past book clubs, ending up finishing the book in a few days 2-4 weeks in. Following the usual 10 weeks format, we could read the stories of 5 people a week. I am also currently studying in the medical field, so I’d be happy to read stories revolving around a hospital, and the publisher’s review got me curious.
488 pages make it seem like a big book, but I wonder if a lot of these pages might be blank: I had a quick look, and the stories seem really short (definitely not 9 pages)

I thought I’d try and establish a timeline:
How about: nominations open until Sunday 14th, then a week of voting, and that gives us a week from Monday 22nd to get our books. Then we can start reading on Monday 29th.

Does that sound good? Do we need more time between when vote closes and the reading begins? Idk how the tariff situation ended up like in the US, but if someone want to buy the physical book from Korea maybe 2 weeks would be better?

The book is coming up at 338 pages in my e-reader, so I have worked out a few options for pacing: the classical 10-week book club, and a slower and faster option. Take the number of pages with a grain of salt as that can vary a lot between e-readers (and of course if you’re reading the paper book).
