Hi everyone, sorry Iโve been MIA lately! Iโve been busy with work and other real life stuff and have had to deprioritize Korean for the moment. The current round of the club is rapping up, so if someone else would like to take care of organizing the next round please feel free!
Iโd be open to organizing some kind of mystery club or some other harder kind of book (sci-fi, adult romanceโฆ), but Iโm not sure how much interest there would be.
I also havenโt dedicated much time to korean lately, and barely did any reading for the past month or so, but Iโd be up for it if itโs a pace I can manage. I was having severe eye strain issues, but I finally made my ereader korean-ready so hopefully that will help.
Okay, it looks like thereโs a bit of interest in a โhardโ book club.
So Iโm going to list some books Iโm interested in reading.
ํธ์ง (Higashino Keigo, ์ฌํํ ์์ค, extremely well reviewed)
๋ธ๋ ์ผ๋งจ series first book (forgot the title) (mystery)
If anyone has any additional suggestions for adult fiction to add to the eventual poll, please respond.
- 82๋ ์ ๊น์ง์ (feminist novel): Wondering if itโs gonna be too literary for me, but Kimchi Reader puts my comp at 91% which is pretty good for me personally. Iโve wanted to read it in English for a while, but reading it in Korean would be even better!
- ์ ์ฃผํ ๋ผ (horror / magical realism / scifi short stories): Also saw this in my local bookstore, then realized it was translated from Korean! Warning: Goodreads ppl say itโs very grotesque
- H๋งํธ์์ ์ธ๋ค: Translation from English โ KR of Crying in H-Mart by Michelle Zauner. Been meaning to read this too. Probably going to make me cry while reading
Iโll accept the first two, but Iโm going to have to reject the last one because Iโve already read it in English
I did read 82๋
์ ๊น์ง์ in English as well, but that was a while ago and I think there could be things to learn from it) thanks for the comment!
Hello hello all you Korean learners!
Would anyone be interested in a book club starting October?
If so, I see a lot of books were mentioned last June, how about we start nominations?
The template is here:
**Book**: Put a Natively link here!
**Genre**: provide genre if it's clearly stated (mystery/horror/sf/etc), otherwise "general fiction" is fine, or leave blank
**Length**: number of pages, and number of volumes if applicable
**Is there an ebook available?**: yes or no (buying options are visible on the Natively book page)
[details="Summary - Korean"]
you can copy/paste this from wherever you'd like. Please have it in a drop down like shown.
[/details]
[details="Summary - English"]
Optional! Chuck the above summary into DeepL, Google Translate, or the like. Or remove this section.
[/details]
[details="Content warnings if known"]
You can't be expected to know all the content of a book you haven't read yet, but if you know it deals with specific heavy topics, or the author is known for doing so, please include it here.
[/details]
**Why are you nominating this book:** This section is optional, but it's nice to know why someone else is interested in reading a book, and might sway others to vote for it!
- Yes (feel free to nominate books)
- Not at this time
There seems to be some interest, so Iโll get the ball rolling!
I did come across an unexpected difficulty when looking for a book to nominate, because it seems every book on my wishlist has already been read by @ddochii
but I found one you havenโt ![]()

Summary - English
A bestselling, prizewinning novel by one of Japanโs most acclaimed young writers, for fans of Convenience Store Woman, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, and the movies Parasite and Rear Window
I think what Iโm trying to say is that Iโve been wanting to become friends with the Woman in the Purple Skirt for a very long timeโฆ
Almost every afternoon, the Woman in the Purple Skirt sits on the same park bench, where she eats a cream bun while the local children make a game of trying to get her attention. Unbeknownst to her, she is being watchedโby the Woman in the Yellow Cardigan, who is always perched just out of sight, monitoring which buses she takes, what she eats, whom she speaks to.
From a distance, the Woman in the Purple Skirt looks like a schoolgirl, but there are age spots on her face, and her hair is dry and stiff. She is single, she lives in a small apartment, and she is short on moneyโjust like the Woman in the Yellow Cardigan, who lures her to a job as a housekeeper at a hotel, where she too is a housekeeper. Soon, the Woman in the Purple Skirt is having an affair with the boss and all eyes are on her. But no one knows or cares about the Woman in the Yellow Cardigan. Thatโs the difference between her and the Woman in the Purple Skirt.
Studiously deadpan and chillingly voyeuristic, and with the off-kilter appeal of the novels of Ottessa Moshfegh, The Woman in the Purple Skirt explores envy, loneliness, power dynamics, and the vulnerability of unmarried women in a taut, suspenseful narrative about the sometimes desperate desire to be seen.

Why are you nominating this book:
Iโm intrigued by the plot, and I want to know how the dynamic between the woman with the purple skirt and the woman with the yellow cardigan works. I canโt tell by the blurb if they become friends, ennemies, competitorsโฆ Iโm a relationship-driven reader ![]()
The end of the summary is what sold me here:
The Woman in the Purple Skirt explores envy, loneliness, power dynamics, and the vulnerability of unmarried women.
It is also a short read, that makes for a short book club, which I feel could be nice to restart this club ![]()
Edit: @bungakushoujo should we change the thread name to show we are looking for nominations? And hopefully get more people interested.
Iโm happy to take care of the rest since I believe youโve been away from Korean lately but idk if I can edit the title of the thread myself.
I updated it for you!

Newlyweds Tricia and Ethan are searching for the house of their dreams.

murder probably considering the genre and synopsis
Why are you nominating this book: This is a bit of a ~risquรฉ nomination since itโs actually an english language novel originally but Iโm suggesting it because:
- There tends to be a mix of levels in the bookclub. Translated novels are much easier and so offer a chance to read more adult fiction at a lower level
- Freida McFadden novels are a hit in kr atm, I keep seeing them recced on korean booktube
- Having read a couple of this authorโs other books in kr already, the translations are lively and the books absolute pageturners
Oh, I just recently finish The Housemaid (in English) and was trying to find a Korean ebook for the next book in the series, so this definitely looks interesting ![]()
Great minds think alike
BUT Omg donโt consider me
nominate freely!! Depending on if one Iโve read gets chosen, I could also reread hehe. Glad you found one I havenโt read too thoโ I had that on my TBR too.
Well there were only 2 voters at the time, I figured if 50% of the people interested in participating have already read the book, the chances of having a fun book club are thin ![]()

Summary - English
People, a steady seller that has attracted 100,000 readers, will be introduced as a new long story. The year 2016 when People People was published may have been a turning point for Jeong Se-rang as a writer. It would be no exaggeration to say that he began to actively reflect social problems in the world of the novel from this work. The artist refined the expression of each sentence to match the current sensitivity of such monumental works, and the medical information that has changed since its publication has become more delicate and accurate than before. This revised edition also draws more attention by designing the cover with a photo of photographer Jeong Mel-Mel, who is currently drawing the most attention. Like the 50 diverse characters in the novel, the cover photos using balls of different colors exist each, but in the end, we resemble ourselves in one big picture.
People of Korea resonates sensitively with Korean society. The work, which not only reveals the reality of anxiety that shakes our daily lives, but also shows efforts to heal, received the 50th Hankook Ilbo Literature Award for โa work that revives the solidarity of this society with strong readability and attraction.โ Meanwhile, this [Jeong Se-rang Collection], which will be presented with ใThis Closeใ, resembles the voice of an artist who is deeply interested in environmental issues, and was produced as an eco-friendly edition using FSCยฎ (Forest Stewardship Councilยฎ) certification paper.

Publishers Review
A face that resembles us, a voice that resembles us
Many peopleโs personal concerns and social conflicts are melted in the faces that resemble us and voices that resemble us in ใPeople of Peopleใ. In it, the artist harmoniously mixes the sadness and emotion of life that he experiences every day with a healthy sense of balance that does not have empty optimism or disastrous despair.
The novel vividly captures the real problems of Korean society, including the stories of the bereaved families of humidifier disinfectants, the eyes of LGBTQ people, inter-floor noise problems, awareness of abortion and contraception, sinkhole crashes, and the risk of large truck accidents. Stories drawn through him, such as โa 25-ton truck that slipped in the rain crossed the central line,โ and her husband experienced unexpected misfortune in a car accident, but the wifeโs heart remains in the background of handing over the sandwich she was trying to eat after seeing the rally of the Korea Cargo Association.
On the other hand, as the story revolves around university hospitals, many people who work at hospitals appear in People of People of People. Through meticulous coverage and advice, the artist includes not only doctors and nurses, but also security personnel, MRI drivers, transfer drivers, information managers, public relations staff, anatomists, clinical trial directors, doctor helicopter drivers, public health doctors, pharmaceutical salespeople, and hospital founders. The story becomes more three-dimensional and rich with the stories of patients visiting the emergency room, psychiatry, and surgery.
The composition of 50 characters as doctors, patients, family members, family friends, and family members is close and structured, but the moments when completely unrelated characters meet each other are amazing. Maybe we are already living with comfort from countless people passing by.
Like the sentence in the novel, โThe most despised and the most loved are the people,โ we will despair and shed tears because of them, but we believe that there is hope in them. The belief that if we can be each otherโs stepping stones and hold hands to cross well in the mud, we will be able to move forward slowly but firmly. It is a hope for people and a promise to the next generation.
the words of a new writer
Before I wrote People, there was a sinkhole just a few meters from where I lived. Fortunately, nobody was injured, but a series of other sinkhole accidents resulted in deaths, and I felt anxious and concerned whenever I read related articles. I think the mourning for the victims of the local communityโs accidents was the starting point of this novel. Although six years have passed and I have moved to another city, sometimes I look for more sinkholes, and I am relieved to know that they have not happened.
Itโs just not been a long time, and if I had written this novel in 2021, I think nearly half of the people might have been different people. Itโs fascinating that the story exists in such a flowing form, and that the flowing path gradually turns and changes. What kind of terrain change will happen when the water changes like this within that person? My head always tilts toward the day it didnโt come.
Wherever you are, or in the safety you deserve. I believe that when I first wrote this story, I believe that standing together in a solid place is the next thing.

Why are you nominating this book: This book was recommended to me by a Korean who enjoys reading. I thought that it might be interesting as a look into Korean society and that it would be a nice fit for a paced book club, being a collection of 50 stories about 50 different people (although I know some people are not into short stories). Iโve personnally had a hard time following the schedule in past book clubs, ending up finishing the book in a few days 2-4 weeks in. Following the usual 10 weeks format, we could read the stories of 5 people a week. I am also currently studying in the medical field, so Iโd be happy to read stories revolving around a hospital, and the publisherโs review got me curious.
488 pages make it seem like a big book, but I wonder if a lot of these pages might be blank: I had a quick look, and the stories seem really short (definitely not 9 pages)
I thought Iโd try and establish a timeline:
How about: nominations open until Sunday 14th, then a week of voting, and that gives us a week from Monday 22nd to get our books. Then we can start reading on Monday 29th.
Does that sound good? Do we need more time between when vote closes and the reading begins? Idk how the tariff situation ended up like in the US, but if someone want to buy the physical book from Korea maybe 2 weeks would be better?
- Sept. 29th
- Oct. 6th
- Oct. 13th
- More time for nominations / for voting
Once we have chosen our book weโll see how long of a read it is and how long we want the book club to run for.
I wish I had a somewhat easy book to nominateโฆ
Well, Iโll throw in a mystery anyway

Rough translation: main character is a math teacher at an all female high school who manages the archery club. He is the target of 3 attacks on his life. After a teacher is discovered dead from cyanide poison in the school locker room, Maeshima starts to investigate with a detective. But before they solve the case, another victim is discovered: a gym teacher, also killed by cyanide poisoning, found dead in a clown suit while the school festival is in full swing. But Maeshima was the one originally supposed to dress up as a clown. Thinking that the victim died in his place, Maeshima is horrifiedโฆ

Well well well, the votes have been cast, and it looks like we will start reading https://learnnatively.com/book/b81a62977d/ on October 6th!
The book is coming up at 338 pages in my e-reader, so I have worked out a few options for pacing: the classical 10-week book club, and a slower and faster option. Take the number of pages with a grain of salt as that can vary a lot between e-readers (and of course if youโre reading the paper book).
