Do people find that these auto-hover over dictionaries work for korean? All the inflections, spacing issues, lack of kanji/hanja… I feel like that auto-tooling has a lot more issues for korean than other languages.
Yomichan has a Korean version (I haven’t tried it) but I personally use Migaku and Kimchi Reader with have some extra features that are worth the cost ($5usd each).
Migaku:
Chrome Based
PC Only
Sentence Mining Support - Websites, Netflix, YT, Reader App
Stats based on known words (can’t mass input known words)
Korean Parser - Pretty poor, fucks up multiple times a sentence.
Reader uses 100~ word pages
Kimchi Reader:
Chrome + Firefox Based
Works on PC and Mobile Devices
Sentence Mining Support - Websites, YT, Reader App, Netflix
Can Import Word Lists
Best Korean Parser available
Built in grammar support (not a lot of grammar, still being expanded)
Still a super new app so regular bugs (but super fast discord support) - e.g with epub import
Reader is scroll through currently but adding pages is being worked on(causes lag with bigger files)
@brandon the only popup/hover dict I’ve found that consistently works is Kimchi Reader. Migaku’s is pretty shitty and doesn’t work a lot of the time cause their parsing is broken
I get what I’m looking for about 80% of the time; if not, I’ll usually just move on unless it’s really necessary for understanding or I’m intensive reading (in which case I kind of expect to have to look things up anyway).
It would be nice to have better tools for Korean, but beggars can’t be choosers…
I’ve using yomi chan with the korean dictionary for a while and it works pretty well for me. I didn’t have that much issues. It would be nice to give the hanja for the vocabulary, but I can just use Naver dictionary to search that up. It even defines some grammar points.
여러분 안녕하세요? Just a reminder that nominations will close this Saturday, Oct 7, and polling will begin!
We have a tie between 2 and unlimited nominations - hopefully someone will come along and break the tie but for now if there was another book you wanted to nominate, you can just go ahead and do so.
And now an important question - how many votes should we allow per person when voting for our pick? Let me know your thoughts! Thanks
The poll be open until the end of Sunday, Oct 15 so make sure to get your vote in. I’ve set it up to allow one vote per person as that was the highest voted preference I’m the previous poll at the moment of making this post.
What should we read?
페인트
소리를 보는 소년
구미호 식당
안락

And another question! When would we want to start reading?
We also had the most votes for beginning mid November, so we will officially kick off on November 13th!
However, before then there are a couple admin topics I’d love to hear from everyone on:
The book has a total of 176 pages, so how many should we aim to read every week? If we do a classic 10 week book club, that would be around 18 pages a week, but we can also go faster or slower.
How many pages should we read per week?
~10
~20
~30

Another question! I think we will be quite a small group to begin with, so we could probably get away with just having one single discussion thread and using it every week. Or do we prefer multiple?
Should we have a single discussion thread or a new one every week?
I finally got a digital copy of the book and wanted to start breaking down the reading sections, and, while the book does have many individual chapters, some are longer than ~20 pages or don’t break up cleanly. Thoughts on how to break things up @brandon and @bibliothecary?? We could stop in the middle of chapters or follow the chapters as best as we can, but it may result in a bigger reading “assignment” some weeks.
Alright that sounds good then! We can just do 20 pages a week until the 9th week where we will have 16 pages (176/9 roughly). I’ll make the “schedule” when I set up the thread closer to the start date.
I know it’s the end of the year and everyone is busy with festivities, but we are now just several weeks away from the current book (소리를 보는 소년) wrapping up! So, I thought it’d be a good time to slowly open up nominations discussions and regarding the next round.
The guidelines for submission are very flexible, in that basically any full length fiction is ok. I did notice we don’t have many participants in the current round, so if there is anyone out there who wanted to join in but couldn’t due to the difficulty level, feel free to suggest something that would be accessible for you for a vote. It would be great to get more readers next round - the more, the merrier!
I will leave nominations open probably for 2-3 weeks here as we head towards the end of the current club to give people more time to find this thread and respond (especially since it is a busy time of year).
Finally, a housekeeping question:
Should we eliminate the nominations from last round?
