Summary - English

High school sophomore Ban Yoon-hwan works part-time at dawn and dusk and sleeps at school. He does not talk to anyone and is not interested in studying. One day, Jinaru, who is known as an outcast in his class, visits the convenience store where Yoon-hwan works and suggests that they become friends. Yoon-hwan refuses without a second thought, and Naru leaves the convenience store with an expression on his face that seems to have expected it. A few days later, Jinaru hears a girl arguing with Naru in the hallway, and immediately tells Naru, โ€œGet out of here. A harsh voice is heard saying, โ€œAre you a parasite?โ€ After that, Naru does not come to class and really disappearsโ€ฆ โ€ฆ .

Why are you nominating this book: It seems like it might be a mystery and coming of age story, so it should be a similar level of difficulty to other things the club has read. Also, it has an audiobook on Storytel.

The poll is closed and it looks like we want to read ๋œป๋นก์˜ ๊ณ„์ ˆ starting next Monday in the 6th. :+1:t2: Iโ€™ll get a new thread with a schedule set up in the next few days to have it ready to go!

Typo here? Should the second syllable (?) have only one upside-down A? (Sorry, I was going to add this to the book club list and couldnโ€™t figure out for the life of me why I couldnโ€™t find it in Nativelyโ€™s search.)

lol I was trying to figure out what you meant with upside-down A for a minute there :joy: thatโ€™s so funny. It is a typo, shame on me as a Korean learner for spelling a basic word wrong hahaha. It is ๋œป๋ฐ–์˜ ๊ณ„์ ˆ

To try and defend my honor it would be pronounced with ใ…ƒ not ใ…‚ even though itโ€™s spelled that way, but it doesnโ€™t make up for mixing up where the double consonant is and not having ใ„ฒ

Oooh, I missed that as well.

Sorry, I wasnโ€™t sure how else to specify that particular radical part. Glad you caught my meaning, though!

Iโ€™m always impressed with this; Japanese learners have it easy(er) in terms of pronunciation matching spelling, for sure.

:joy::joy::joy: Haha no worries, thanks for catching it

Hi everyone, we now have a new home thread for our upcoming book club pick here:

See you there!

I made a list for our past reads, so we (and newer people as well) can look back on those books.

Wow, appreciate you putting this together! Iโ€™ll link it in the main post. :slightly_smiling_face:

Might be interesting to link our past nominations as well

Hopefully weโ€™ll have more Korean learners joining Natively and the book club as well in the future

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to gauge interest on another doing another round of book club:

  • Yes, letโ€™s start right away!
  • Yes, but I need a break (leave a comment)
  • No, I wonโ€™t be joining

I might join depending on the level of the book! And if I canโ€™t read this next book then Iโ€™ll definitely join for the next one, thatโ€™ll leave me plenty of time to get my reading level up

Weโ€™d love to have you! What level are you reading up to these days for reference? Since the club is just for fiction in general, weโ€™ve never had any limitationsโ€ฆbut it may be an idea to do one round at a lower level to bring more people on board to level up together :muscle:

Iโ€™m just recently venturing into level 21, reading ์ด์ƒํ•œ ๊ณผ์ž ๊ฐ€๊ฒŒ ์ „์ฒœ๋‹น, but itโ€™s going fairly well, and I seem to be going faster than the book club went. So I think I could go as high as level 23 and still be able to keep up.
If it can help bring more people onboard - great! But I realise that lvl 23 is still fairly low and there may not be much diversity in the books, so I donโ€™t want to keep you from reading something more interesting.

I personally wouldnโ€™t mind something lower if it meant more people join in - the more the merrier! Worst case if people arenโ€™t interested, a second book club could be set up.

Great! letโ€™s leave the nominations open to all levels and see if thereโ€™s something in the lowest 20s then.
Iโ€™ll vote yes on participation.
