🙋 Language goals for 2024? How did you do in 2023? ✨

For 2024, some general goals:

  • Read all SAO novels (31 unread from main series + progressive)
  • Be able to read lower L30s books and various visual novels comfortably, without translation
  • Seriously improve my reading speed
  • Transition to only using monolingual dictionary(?)
  • Improve my writing/conversation ability

LNs: When I started off the year, I was in a much more “I wanna do LNs” mindset, but so far I’ve finished 139 manga and 1 LN  … I’ll start getting more done tho via reading along to audiobooks

Reading speed: is slowly but steadily progressing… I can tell via weekly lessons (I hope it won’t backslide much due to job searching/eventual new job)

I’d love to read Fate/Stay Night, but I think that will probably have to wait till 2025

Last year (written in January)

I didn’t set any particular goals, but I’d say I did pretty well on the general things I wanted to accomplish, but not as well as I would have liked.

Finished:

  • 15 light novels
  • 164 manga
  • 558 anime episodes/movies
  • 1,000 or so written kanji in Ringotan
  • Read 286 out of 341 days
  • Watched 142 out of 341 days

Moved on from:

  • WaniKani (L55?)
  • Satori Reader

Lately, I’ve been progressively reading more manga and light novels without translation, but even in easier LNs, I have to look things up constantly. I can sometimes watch YouTube vids targeted at intermediate learners, or various short clips, and follow them pretty comfortably. Otoh the only anime I feel like I can watch without checking translation are SAO, 五等分の花嫁, and possibly Fate/Stay Night UBW (very iffy) - and that’s mainly because I’ve seen/read them multiple times. So it’s both encouraging and disappointing.

I’m getting comfier at reading plot summaries in JP

Where I fell short: generally I thought my comprehension would be higher, and I wanted to finish more LNs. Also my listening comprehension (without subtitles) is pretty far behind where I would have wanted it. But that makes sense, since it’s not something I’ve focused on at all.
