It’s interesting how people see things so differently. I really enjoyed all the SoL, even the long descriptions of how something is done. I was like “ah, so this is how you would have done that. cool, cool.”

Speaking as someone who hates the cooking aspects, that’s a pretty big exaggeration. There was one chapter in the first book about cooking (yes it was terrible).
Beyond that, I guess it depends on what you consider “slice of life” or “filler”. While I would say that the story moves somewhat slowly, I rarely ever feel bored reading Honzuki.
I found it really cool most of the time too. Learning how to make paper for example was really interesting, though the stuff about making ink in volume 5 was a bore.

What a crazy ride that poll was! I would have been excited to read any of the top 3 finishers so it was fun watching them battle for the top. Looking forward to reading the famous 本好き and seeing what all the hype is about!

Alright, I think it was you who I remember complaining about it but I guess I added a bit of superlatives to it

I think the furigana version splits the book in half (so you need two books to cover the same content)
As far as the first volume is concerned, I assume it doesn’t. That version is aimed at kids, so I assume that violence in later volumes (or even shocking scenes) have been edited (from experience with other series in that edition), but that should not impact us.

Hmm. So one thing I noticed while looking at the poll, we have a lot of entries with tied votes. So ignoring those tied votes, SOA Progressive and やはり俺の青春ラブコメはまちがっている。 are the two lowest-voted books, but they have the same amount of votes, and would technically be tied for “lowest voted book”.
When cutting entries, should we consider tied books as a group, or count them individually? If we count them individually, do we leave it up to fate as to what makes the cutoff and what doesn’t? For example, going with cutting the five books with the least number of votes, 真の仲間じゃないと勇者のパーティーを追い出 and 君を愛したひとりの僕へ each have four votes, but only the former would be cut.
I’m probably just overthinking this, but I wanted to make sure everything was fair when we start cutting large numbers of books.

I think we count individually, but if book 5 has the same votes as another book, both get cut.

I agree - I think it makes sense to count them individually. Otherwise with lots of ties we could end up cutting out way more than 5 books at a time. If there’s a big tie for 5th from the bottom then cutting them all seems fair.

I’ve read along to the audiobook for the prologue and ch 1. So far they’re identical. The only difference is the book shows 埋もれ as うずもれ, while the narrator says it うもれ. They also have different covers, and the furigana one has an extra picture or two in the first few chapters.
Iirc the two editions of サマーウォーズ were specifically known for being different, right? Unless it’s really common for furigana versions to differ, it seems reasonable to assume that 本好き should be the same.

I checked the samples for both versions of Summer Wars and they were completely different. I think usually the furigana versions just add furigana to an existing book, but there are sometimes changes to reduce violence. For example, in the first volume of Kino no Tabi, an entire chapter was cut and replaced in the furigana version because the original chapter was too violent.

I’ll be attempting to join in on this one. I say attempting because judging by the natively level, and the fact that I’ve mostly been reading manga until now, this is very much a stretch goal.
However, as a target for a stretch goal, it’s pretty much the ideal candidate. I’ve seen the anime (3 times in fact, subbed once and dubbed twice), so I know where the plot goes to avoid getting too lost, I’ve read this exact book in English before (only true for part 1 volume 1, after that I decided the anime was a sufficiently complete adaptation and jumped ahead to part 3), and I’m currently reading the manga adaptation in Japanese (and have just finished the first book of that, and expect to have the second one down by the time this club actually starts).
I didn’t realise the TO version was literally the same content with furigana. That might be a good plan B if the full version proves overly difficult. I might try chapter 1 ahead of time to judge if I need to swap to that one.

For those who are going to try to go with the TOジュニア文庫 version (Furigana) of 本好き might need to buy more than one volume.
Since the first arc 兵士の娘 in the Furigana version is 6 volumes, and in the mainstream publishing is 3, I’d say they are roughly divided in half.

I just checked the respective contents and vol 1+2 of the TOジュニア文庫 version include all the chapters that the “normal” version vol 1 has. 
Edit: Vol 1-13 of the TOジュニア文庫 version and vol 1 of the regular version are on KU (Japan). There is a free trial month (or a 2 months at 99 Yen each) available, if you can get it to work.

Just chiming in here, my opinion is the lowest 5 assuming there’s more than 15 nominations (or 10, whatever is good). If the club has a slow period it’d be a bad idea IMO to cut all the nominations. (If this was already discussed and I missed it sorry).
Re: Honzuki. I’ve already started reading it in JP so I might as well join in. To be honest Part 1 is my least favorite arc, to the point I dropped the first book (in English) since I disliked the MC. She’s now my favorite though so I’m glad I picked it back up!

With respect to cutting off nominations, on WK, a book needed to get 3 strikes (one strike meant being below 20% votes, iirc).
That’s more effort, but I have seen books being on the brink of getting cut bouncing back to being picked eventually.
(edit: I’m not saying we should do that, just that it’s another option)
