📻 Mid-Year Audiothon 🌼

Ahoy! The year is coming to its halfway point, and what better way to celebrate than to see how much progress we’ve made with a nice little challenge?

Enters, the Mid-Year Audiothon.

All through the past… however long it’s been going on, there have been monthly Listening Challenges hosted here on Natively. If you have been participating in them, here is a chance to see if they have paid off, and if you haven’t, a chance to see if maybe you should sign up

:radio: What’s an Audiothon?

It’s a marathon, except instead of running we listen to stuff in our target language(s). The idea is to consume as much audio as you can in 24 hours, tracking it as you go. You can track the minutes, episodes, audiobook pages (do audiobooks have pages??)… Anything that makes sense to you.

:radio: Date

Everyone is busy with real life, so to be flexible, the event will take place over the course of 4 days: from Friday 27th to Monday 30th of June. Choose the 24-hour window that works best for you, and limit your tracking to that time-period.

:radio: Metrics & Content

Anything goes as this is only for fun, but in case you’re looking for ideas, I have compiled a list of things that would be fun to listen to, and ways to track them:

  • audiobooks
  • radio shows
  • podcasts
  • series
  • animes
  • movies
  • reality programmes
  • songs, if you’re the kind of person who listens to the lyrics

Tracking:

  • clock minutes (as in, runtime)
  • dialogue minutes (leaving out any silent times)
  • pages
  • episodes

You can also go for difficulty instead of quantity, and set yourself a Natively level goal. Here they are for reference:

:radio: Participants

No requirements, feel free to join!
Before the event: Let us know when you’ll be doing your Audiothon, what you’ll be listening to, your goals, your past experiences with listening if you’re so inclined…
During the event: Update us on how you’re doing! It’s so much fun listening along to everyone else, and seeing what content everyone is listening to! And it’s also good to see the setbacks - everything doesn’t always go to plan. If you cat decided it was Play Time™ and is keeping you from listening… Then we want a picture of your cat.
After the event: Time to post your results! Not only the metrics but it would be fun to see how the experience was for everyone.

PS: there will most likely be a Summer Solstice Readathon happening over on WaniKani the week prior if you’re looking for a Japanese reading alternative. Join both! Dedicate all of your weekends to language learning!

here we go:

My goal is to listen to 5h30, because that’s the amount of time I read during the Spring Readathon. I’ll track the total runtime of the episodes, minus the end credits.

Content I will be watching:

I haven’t really been into podcasts lately, so I will most likely only be listening to TV shows. Possible candidates:

If I could finish 여자에게 설레는 편 (2 eps left, totaling maybe 30 min) and 이번 생도 잘 부탁해 (2.5 eps left, so 2h30) that would just be the cherry on top :cherries:
Then again I am being delusional and thinking that maybe I’ll have finished them already when the Audiothon comes. In that case, I’d like to focus on 다시 만난 세계, just because being able to watch something without subtitles is thrilling

Excited to participate, @monace! I’m thinking I’ll be participating that Sunday, but it might end up being Saturday with how that weekend shuffles out. I’ll need to think on if I want to listen to anything in particular as well…

I’m thinking I’ll maybe try to do some Spanish and Japanese listening or (more likely) watching. If I feel really motivated I guess I could try doing one “audiothon” each for both languages, one on Saturday and one on Sunday? Either way, regardless of exactly how I end up planning my time, I think I’ll probably just watch youtube videos for Spanish and some anime for Japanese. There’s a while left so I imagine I’ll have a clearer idea of exactly what I want to do closer to the date.

Decided that since I haven’t joined in the listening challenges recently I’ll join in on this and see what I manage to get done in 24hrs. I have the day off work on 28th so since it’s not currently booked for anything and I have no language exchanges or such, I think I’ll just chill out and focus on listening that day.

Planned content:

  • Audio books (most likely the ふしぎ駄菓子屋銭天堂 series, Read Real Japanese Fiction audio book or re-listening to some of the lower level graded reader short stories I have)
  • Comprehensible Japanese videos from the playlists I’m working through on YouTube
  • Music from my Japanese playlist (mostly Gackt, Stereopony, Espirit D’Air and Vivid Bad Squad)
  • If I start struggling, I might also try some Podcasts from Japanese with Shun or Nihongo Con Tepei

Goal, listen to as much as I can over a 24 hour period (might try to pull a full up for 24hrs session if I can, midnight to midnight, but we’ll see :joy:)

I’m still uncertain if I can participate, but I’m going to be optimistic.

I usually spend a couple of hours reading spanish in the morning before family gets up then watching spanish at night after they go to bed, but I’ll forgo that to get as much french listening done as possible aiming for 12 hours.

Thankfully, familly is francophile so we usually watch 3 hours of french TV at night, so that is a gimme even if we keep the subtitles on for the non francophone. Currently we’re watching Tandem, and there should be enough episodes left to make it until then; it’s silly but fun and almost exactly at my level. I may save the last few episodes of HPI 'cause it’s great if harder, but I’ve also started watching movies with some mixed success and would love to watch more even though I’ll have to work hard until then to be able to do that well enough. French movies from the 80’s and early 90’s are kinda amazing, and a Beatrice Dalle/Jean Reno marathon would make me too happy for words.

I’ll try to join. I’ll aim for the 28th, if something comes up I’ll drop to the 29th.

My date: June 28th

My language: Japanese

My resources and goals
Podcast at the gym
The Bite Size Japanese Podcast, 60+ minutes

Half finished series that have been in my watch pile for months
Noragami, episodes 9-12
Flying Witch, episodes 5-12
Non Non Biyori, episodes 10-12
Rillakuma’s Theme Park Adventure, episodes 5-8

That’s a total of 19 episodes, or about 6 hours. A lofty goal for me, but I’m going to set it anyway.
