I’m at chapter 1.1 and I found that there are so many more kanji words which has no furigana and my ereader dictionary seems to detect those as human names instead of things. :disappointed_relieved:

Which ereader (more precisely, which ereading software) are you using ?

I’m using the Kobo Clara BW ereader and Japanese-English dictionary from https://www.reddit.com/r/ajatt/comments/10kcu2v/updated_2023_japaneseenglish_dictionary_for_kobo/

For example, 肉調 only shows the meaning of 肉 meat and 彫 carving. So I’m not sure whether it’s read as にくほり or にくちょうand whether it really meant meat carving. :sweat_smile:

Another example is 刈込. The dictionary identified it as かりごめ、かいこめ、かいこみ、かりこみ surnames. But from the context of the book, I guessed that it’s about the garden. When I typed into the Shirabe Jisho app on my phone, it showed meanings of each kanji only. :upside_down_face:

I’m mostly reading by guessing the meanings based on the kanji meanings without knowing the actual reading in Japanese. :sweat:

I finally finished these chapters!

Here are my thoughts:

  1. Language-wise, it’s quite challenging due to the use of kanji combinations not found in my dictionary. Additionally, I’m unfamiliar with Japanese pronunciation since these words aren’t included in the dictionary. So, I usually just go with my gut and guess what the kanji mean, or I just skip them altogether. Then, I read the chapter summaries here and use ChatGPT.

  2. There are many things I’m not familiar with, such as 四角の光背, which was mentioned in Chapter 1.3. I found its meaning by asking ChatGPT.

Edit: Not sure why the spoiler and hide details function didn’t work for me. I was trying to paste what ChatGPT explained about the Square Halo and how it relates to Shizuko’s comments. Only works with the word “Test”
