I just started volume 3 as well!

Book 3 Prologue + Ch 1

Yet another surprising devolvement with the existence of another snack store. Hopefully that’ll come up again, I want to see this developped more.

I figured something was up what with Beniko coming directly to the customer to bring him to the shop herself, and that turned out to be very much the case.

I was curious what the potential negative consequences would be for misusing the snack, because I didn’t see that going in the way of making the poor 5 year old suffer more. But then I guess that ended up working out! The bad guy got the consequences of his actions, the risk for the dad was more choosing revenge over his daughter, leaving her to suffer from the curse.

So an excellent start overall, I’ll probably read the rest of the volume relatively quickly because I can’t wait to see what happens :eyes:

Spoilers ahead!

Book 3 ch2

Phone calls tend to tire me out a lot, so I get the main character for this one :joy:. That was just a disaster waiting to happen though, but hey, at least we still got an unexpected ending with that one, what with the kidnapping.

Book 3 ch3

Idk if it’s just that I coincidentally have come across a lot of this vocab, but this one felt weirdly much easier than the other stories. I think I did one or two lookups, one of them being 말괄량이, meaning tomboy ㅋㅋㅋ. It helped that the Japanese terms had a nice little explanation next to them though.

I figured something bad would happen with the boy making two wishes, that only the second wish would be taken into account. The appearance of another wish maker though? That I definitely did not expect.

Book 3 ch4

This story makes me wonder if Beniko also used this pickled plum snack, and gave the red plum to one of the people running the other magical stores. It would certainly explain her oddly wrinkle free appearance, and from what we’ve seen, she’s definitely one for revenge.

I was happy to see the snack instructions make a comeback, we hadn’t gotten those in a while. I lowkey love the idea of the bad guy being stuck in a hospital with everyone thinking he’s crazy because he keeps saying he’s in his twenties though. And a nice ending for the grandma, learning to love herself, wrinkles or not.

Just jumping in to say that I started to read the first book and plan to keep reading the whole series. It feels a bit too difficult now, but I hope that by the end of the series my reading abilities have gotten better.

I read the first book and parts of the second book years ago, but I started again from book 1, page 1 now just to be sure that I remember everything.

Finished another chapter!

book 3 chapter 2

This story was only okay for me. I was kind of surprised by the turn it took about her friend being kidnapped, it got very scary when it said that her friend had met up with a strange man who was saying she could be a model. I was like, human trafficking?? Of course it’s a children’s book so she is fine but that plot point felt kind of dark.

Also, the main character’s response to that whole situation was just to turn off her phone? But the whole reason Sayaka got kidnapped is because the main character wasn’t looking at her phone and was letting the answering machine snail answer for her! Kind of seems like she should be keeping an eye on Sayaka!

book 3 chapter 3: ema senbei

This was a fun story. At first, I was annoyed because I thought the boy was going to be rewarded somehow even though he bullies the one girl. I hate when media is like ‘this boy bullies a girl but it’s fine because he likes her.’ But the story took a fun turn with the two wishes colliding! I thought it was fun that the two wishes were phrased exactly the same way. And a first appearance of the 銭天堂 pop-up shop!

Edit: I’m in posting jail but here are the next two chapters reactions:

Book 3 chapter 4:

This chapter was only fine for me although I did think it was kind of fun that we got an in-universe explanation for how Beniko has such smooth skin haha.

Book 3 chapter 5

:joy: Okay, I wasn’t expecting such a chaotic ending. I guess no one wins in this story. This was fun with the siblings switching roles and the illustration of all the younger siblings treating お兄ちゃん as a little brother was really funny to me.

The bottom panel of the illustration is my favorite :joy:

Book 3 Chapter 5

That one was such a wild card right? A nice thought experiment, like what if you had a different role in family and society every day, maybe interesting, but omg it would be exhausting

Book 3 chapter 5

I found myself wondering if the other characters were aware of what was happening. Like, our main guy 明 knows that he used to be お兄さん and now he’s 弟 but do the other siblings remember they used to be the younger siblings? At the end, everyone must be switching places, do they remember from day to day?

Yes, I wanted to know that, too :joy: I’m not sure what’s worse…

I finished book 3!!

book 3 chapter 6

Ok, the mummy chapter was awesome. I really enjoyed the perspective of someone who wasn’t actually the customer being like ‘what is going on here’ hahaha. Also, this chapter had some comedy moments when she was rushing to make the potion to heal her sister and trying to borrow milk from the ojiisan but he kept pulling out the wrong ingredients hahah.

I just started book 6, so @CatDQ I’ll peak into your post and reply as I go

It’s been a while, so I looked back at my notes and was really glad to have this thread. I forgot just about everything from volume 5 so it was a good refresh.

Book 6

Prologue

ok - Beniko’s reopening the store after the fiasco of book 5, but at the start she has the symptoms of a cold - or is it some kind of curse on her?! Judging by the ghost on the back cover and how these prologues foreshadow world building, I’m curious if this is a continuation of the Yodomi arc or a new character!

Ch 1-2+

No worries, I kind of kept them very short.

I’m considering re-reading the series once I’ve finished 坊っちゃん since I seem to be understanding more grammar inherently as I continue reading stuff. That and the fact I have forgotten some of the world building parts (or didn’t really understand them the first time round).

Ohh, I still haven’t read book 4, so I might just start that soon!

Ch 1 ビッグリもなか

Neat - I like the idea of a play on words misunderstanding meaning that the customer gets the wrong sweet. (The kid wanted to be taller but Beniko thought he wanted to be an 大物- like the “bigger” person in English conceptually).

Ch 2 バランスラスク

The couple get the バランスラスク so they stop fighting about how clean the house should be. I was predicting if they ate the second box that they would change further in the other direction and be less happy, but that wasn’t the case (which is good, that would have been boring! ). At first I thought what Beniko meant with her warning about eating too much is that later when the kids are fighting they will wish they would have still had the second box to give the twins.

But in the guide book - eating both boxes is what caused the imbalance in the next generation and the twins not getting along

That doesn’t feel very fair!

Ch 3 がまんエンピツ

Well if you need うんこ vocabulary for kids I guess this is where you get it

Ch 4 interlude

This slang is killing me :exploding_head::sob: I’ll write some notes on what tripped me up.

やんす seems to be です

At first due to the new character’s name I wrote this but it’s wrong: It seems Yodomi gave a treat to a prison guard and in exchange he’s getting her out. Correction: he’s not a prison guard!

He is introduced when she calls him 天獄園の怪童. 怪童 is his name, which I didn’t get at first because it’s also a word meaning strong youth. 天獄園 is a play on the similar sounding 天国 (heaven) and 典獄 (prison). So at first I thought/assumed went with considering it as some kind of fantasy prison guard term. But that is not it, at this point you don’t know / maybe a Japanese child would guess. This isn’t really a spoiler but we find out at the beginning of volume 7 天獄園 is a 遊園地 (amusement park) that he runs.

Yodomi gave him a treat in the past, and he is helping her.

As far as I understand he’s currently interfering with Beniko and making a plan to get out Yodomi. But for some reason he wants them to write a letter to Beniko. Yes, that is mysterious at this point!

I think looking back, there was just a lot of mystery, and that made it hard to know what I should understand and what I should guess. It got cleared up on its own later, as expected. But hopefully these notes are helpful to someone!

チャーミングミ

I liked the idea of the dog getting a treat, but the format of how it played out just felt more childish than normal

ラプンツェル プレッツェル

Again, I liked some of the ideas that went into this, but this one I found unbearably contrived. Maybe at this point in the book I’m losing some goodwill with the book :dotted_line_face: The girl having an obsession with how her dad looks so that he gets the Rapunzel pretzel snack, and then her friend falling down a hill/cliff so he could save her with his long hair (which conveniently can grow to the limit of just long enough to save her), Beniko conveniently finding them, although just for the reveal that the father already had a sweet from her and refuses the replacement sweet.

It was nice to see someone being sensible and refusing it though :joy:

子守コウモリ

This was my favorite story of the book - the twist at the end with the child/bat → mother/son relationship that the real mom had to battle was a pretty funny idea in the end :joy:

Epilogue

Showdown coming up. :eyes: (you call that a letter?!!)

Hi everyone, I finished my notes on Volume 6 in the post above.

I’ll read volume 7 at some point to see where the story development goes. I personally think so far, if you stopped at volume 5 you would reach the end of a mini arc at a high point in the series. My overall opinion on vol 6 (spoiler free, but blurring it anyway): I have to say this was my least favorite volume. For the first time, it felt like a children’s book, with so many contrived situations. Perhaps I was in a bad mood in the last 2 months :joy: also, my tolerance for kana text is starting to wear a bit thin and I’m pretty much ready to move on. That is, unless volume 7 knocks it out of the park and I binge the rest of the series out of pure obsession

I started book 7, it seems I just can’t help myself

:candy: :lollipop: :dango:

It’s interesting, after reading these continuously, I get a bit tired of the kana heavy text. But after reading much harder works without furigana for a while, it’s relaxing to come back to Zenitendo. So I’ll probably read these now and then as easy interludes as long as that feels worthwhile and fun. Anyone else still reading here?

I’m planning to read book 4 during the WK readathon in a week :candy: That’s the last book I have in paperback though.

I’m coming back to them once I’ve finished 坊っちゃん as I’ll need something simpler to read. Also considering re-reading from the start to pick up on the stuff I sort of missed first time around then will read them in between other things. I recently picked up the 3rd one of the next series too.

That’s a good idea, at some point I’ll relisten or reread them, too.

FYI I updated my notes on the interlude (ch 4) in book 6 now that I understand things better, I had a mistake regarding one character.

I started re-reading from book 1 yesterday and was surprised at how much of a difference it was this time around. Hopefully by the time I get back to book 7 I’ll understand most of what I missed first time around. Will be re-listening to them as part of my listening focus too.
