Product Updates & Casual Natively Discussion

Why wouldn’t you wanna recommend something obscure? If anything, it could use the rec (assuming there isn’t like a reason for it being obscure)

Did you mean the opposite?? I’m pretty sure most of us are bookworms here

My own interest seem to drift into obscurity and I’ve been steered onto more popular stuff by other people which has let me more carefully find suitable books without them being too tough. Basically, anything that hasn’t had a localization in English is likely going to be obscure for new learners right? Things like Initial D are considered obscure I guess - I have people who say 2013 anime is ‘old’.

Anyways. Thanks to here I am expanding my horizons at least - I guess you can say most of us are bookworms, but I don’t think people go through a book or day more here. Am I wrong?

I’m wondering if we’re thinking of different things when we say obscure? By obscure I mean “not particularly well known or popular”. Which to my mind has no correlation with “suitable for recommendation” unless you have an audience who is biased against non-popular or “old” things… which it kinda sounds like you do?

As an earlier readier, most of what I read, I’d already read in English… but I also read a few things that were partially or fully untranslated - most of which were more suitable than some of my more popular choices (like SAO 25 or 暁のヨナ | L29). Their untranslated works’ obscurity didn’t matter so much as their being L15 - L22.

My favorite genre is yuri - which you could say is obscure, or at best very niche. A lot of it is also really excellent early reading material (which is how I discovered it)

Natively is quite wonderful for that!!

Do you mean like novels & non-fiction, or manga? If you mean manga, I think there’s probly a decent number. If you mean novels, I think most ppl here probably don’t have the proficiency & reading speed to consistently finish a target-language novel in 1 day. Also some of us just don’t have that much free time (job, family, etc), but still read as much as we can, are here talking about/reviewing books every day, etc… which seems pretty bookwormy to me. I guess it’s a bit subjective tho.

Fair points. Sometimes popular doesn’t mean people’s interests - and what might be interesting would be obscure for most. That is all I meant. I seem to have a lot of anime that came out 20 years ago that most people never even heard of, same with a lot of old manga I picked up for cheap. Anyways. It is not an important feature, was just an idea out of the blue.

Sounds cool  you’ll probly find some folks here who’ve heard of them fwiw

Just to be clear, I wasn’t criticizing your feature idea or anything - I think it’s a good one. You might wanna make a Product Request post here: Product Requests - Natively Forums . That lets ppl vote on it, and (maybe) makes it a bit more likely to eventually get implemented

Used to kind of putting an idea out there before submitting things. Anyways, I am still too new here to really know everything I need to. So I will lurk a bit more and try to get a better grasp of things. Thanks.

Does anyone know what “Relevance” means in sorting gradings? It seems to use the same order as sorting by “Popularity”, and I can’t tell if that’s a bug or if it’s a coincidence that the most “relevant” results are also the most popular.

I think relevance will show books you’ve also read first.

Ah, that makes sense! I’ve just read so few books (and only like 2 that anyone else has graded) that it doesn’t change anything for me :joy:

Maybe it would be more clear what it does if it was a filter (“only show books I’ve read”) instead of a sorting option, or renamed like “my books first”.

Yeah, I’ve never thought about it before, but I agree that a filter would make more sense. You can add a product request if you want.

I agree that the naming is confusing

that’d make more sense yes

Relevance does prioritize your books first (most of the time… I think sometimes it breaks hah)

Why do only two of the five volumes appear when I search my list for the genre yuri? Seems like a bug.

I have this problem with quite a few entries in my books. That’s one of them, and (at least for this) only when filtering. Edit: some other series have the issue even when not filtering (ex ぜんぶ壊して地獄で愛して | L22)

I noticed the last 3 volumes all have missing page counts. Could be coincidence, but I’ll update if I see that’s the case elsewhere too Nevermind, that was coincidence

Hyperlink line is broken only on the bottom, and there is 1 unnecessary comma. 1 finished alone, won’t have a comma, but still with a broken line.

Personally, I would also remove extra spaces, unless after a comma.

My Books - Sort by Provider is completely not working. Doesn’t matter what provider I select, it doesn’t alter the results at all. Issue is persistent across Firefox & Chrome. All the other filters appear to work fine (though I didn’t thoroughly test)

Do you mean filter by provider? There’s a bug report for that.

Ah, ok. Thx for the link. Left a comment there
