well i have been promised a cat book some time, i’m gonna cash in on that!!! and this one seems like an easier manga, so it would be good for the N4 folks in the server who might wish to participate
The forum is all open source software (discourse) and the product of many, many developers. It is very fancy… and a lot of work
Edit: This software is also used by many sites (bunpro, wanikani, just to name a few), so learning how to use discourse forums is quite a nice skill.
we’ve been caught! I’ll make sure to keep this manga in the suggestions for the next round lol.
Martian cats!
From a fellow cat lover:
- じじ猫くらし, a chill manga about a dude and his senior cat. Gently comedic and sweet.
- 猫暮らしのゲーマーさん 1 | L19, another chill manga, this one about a die-hard gamer learning how to be a cat-mom.
- 猫と竜, a fantasy manga about an orphaned dragon raised by cats. Still slice-of-life, despite being a fantasy setting.
- ジュニア版 図書館ねこデューイ 町をしあわせにした、はたらくねこの物語 | L25??, a book about Dewey, a real cat who “worked” at a library. Translated from English. I linked the children’s version of the book, but there is also an adult version in Japanese.
That’s what I’ve been able to read so far, but there are many more cat books out there. Japan really likes books about cats.
thank you, these all seem very interesting!
Ha! For my namesake I don’t actually read too many things about cats. I agree with the assessment of 世界から猫が消えたなら not being a good choice if you want a happy read. The only cat related reading I can think of which hasn’t been mentioned here yet (愛撫, an Aozora short story) I would strongly not recommend having just reread it now.
Currently reading 海辺のカフカ with a WK book club and one chapter was quite cat focused, but I have no idea if that will happen again.
thanks for letting me know, i will check it out!
Just a note incase it’s something that bothers you (or anyone else reading this thread) - there is some light sexual content so far. I don’t know how far that will go having not finished the book but it seems like something Murakami is known for.
Since you mentioned 猫暮らしのゲーマーさん 1 | L19 , I thought you’d also mention 100万回生きたねこ 講談社の創作絵本 | L15, since you speak quite highly of it. I haven’t actually read it myself, though, but it’s high up on my to-read list.
100万回生きたねこ is indeed a very good book – however OP said they didn’t want any sad books, and that is definitely not a happy book. (It is also a children’s picture book, and it sounds like OP can read more challenging material.)
Ah, right. I didn’t realise it was a sad book. OP said they didn’t mind a light read, though, so I figured children’s books would be okay assuming the story is good, or the entertainment value high.
On the one hand, I can confirm that it’s a sad book (I did cry reading it; that being said I tend to cry for whatever).
On the other hand, I loved it and I thought it’s a great children’s book. It is worth a read, especially if someone can rent it from the library (for those in Japan, I guess)
thank you for the rec! i don’t mind children’s books - but at the moment, i am putting off books with the cat dying (or it being implied), since it is not a good time for me to read those. but i will keep it in my list for the future!
thank you @squarefairy for the warning!
This is probably a bit (a lot ) different than what OP is looking for but it’s somewhat related so I thought I might as well ask anyway. Does anyone know any books that primarily feature 猫耳 characters? I feel like I can’t really find many. I tried reading いつもいっしょ! and really didn’t like it but 金の月のマヤ was a fun read.
@Drinos does it matter if they’re cat girls or cat guys? Here are a few that I found when searching, but let me know if there’s a specific genre (or if you strictly want novels/light novels) that you’re looking for, because I might be able to post this request in a manga discord that I’m in, if youre specifically looking for manga.
- 勇者パーティーを追放されたビーストテイマー、最強種の猫耳少女と出会う has both a light novel and a manga listed on the website.
- 猫耳メイドと少年王子 暗殺ターゲットの王子様に恋をしました
- 猫が望めば
- And this website seems to have webnovels and a slew popped up when I searched it in the tags:
this looks interesting based off of the summary someone put in the reviews so I just added it to my wishlist.
I would honestly not recommend it, even though it’s a fave of mine. There is a fair amount of cat content, but not all of it is particularly great for a cat lover. Light spoiler below.
There is a particularly brutal and violent scene regarding cats that makes for a really difficult read…
I would however echo the sentiments towards おじさまと猫! Extremely cute and wholesome, loveable characters, wonderful art… cannot go wrong. It’s an easy read, but I truly recommend it as a cat lover. It will likely make you cry but in a very heartwarming way.
Oof. Now I’m not sure I want to continue reading it.
Did anyone recommend デキる猫は今日も憂鬱? it has an anime now, too.
Description
When Saku took in a stray black cat, she never expected that he would become the equivalent of a housekeeping life partner. But Yukichi, a giant cat who towers over Saku, is not your ordinary feline. He takes great pride in his culinary skills, and a good sale at the supermarket always gets his whiskers twitching. Saku may not have her act together yet, but at least she has Yukichi!
I guess I should have specified that I don’t read manga. Oops . Though, I did already have 猫耳メイドと少年王子 暗殺ターゲットの王子様に恋をしました listed since it was one of the few I could find. There just seems to be shockingly few books actually centered around characters with the trait compared to others. When going through Anilist, I could find much more 吸血鬼 books that obviously had to do with 吸血鬼 than 猫耳 books that were obviously about 猫耳 when filtering with their respective tags and searching on Bookwalker wasn’t much better… It seems like most of them are doomed to be semi-relevant side-characters in Isekai LNs rather than the focal-point of the story. Maybe I’m just not looking in the right places. That or I grossly overestimated their popularity.
It doesn’t matter what they are as long as they are cute
