Spanish fiction bookclub! | Next: Esperanza Renace

I think I am going to go with Nos Llamaron Enmigo - even though it was not originally in Spanish. It’s a graphic novel which should make it interesting and something I had been wanting to read in English. It is the lowest rated difficulty of all of the books the group has read so far - so a good test for me.

There is an interesting glitch in the system - when I try to search for books, without warning, it flips me back to Japanese. Not always - but enough to confuse me.

Here is a list I found of YA novels originally in Spanish: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/186846.YA_Middle_Grade_Novels_Originally_Written_in_Spanish

That’s an interesting list. Did any spark your interest? I noticed that in the top ten, 3 are a trilogy by Carlos Ruiz Zafón (whose book Marina I bought today!) and one is a trilogy by another author I wasn’t familiar with.

I did not get a chance to look at much in detail yet. We are about to move my son back to college and things are getting a little busy. I will though - and try to make a couple of recommendations. I just need to look at the format for a nomination.

I’ll put the poll up for our next book on Saturday; get in your nominations before then!

I have some books to nominate - do I just add them to this list? I will try to nominate at least one of the 4 I have found. Headed out of town for a little while, and will put the remaining ones up when I can but I don’t think I can do it before the poll opens this weekend.

Use this nomination template, one book per post:

**Genre**: provide genre if it's clearly stated (mystery/horror/sf/etc), otherwise "general fiction" is fine, or leave blank
**Length**: number of pages, and number of volumes if applicable
**Is there an ebook available?**: yes or no (buying options are visible on the Natively book page)
**Is there an audiobook available?**: yes or no
**Variety of Spanish**: Is it Castillan Spanish? Latin American Spanish? When in doubt, look at where the author was born.

you can copy/paste this from wherever you'd like. Please have it in a drop down like shown.

[details="Summary - English"]
Optional! Chuck the above summary into DeepL, Google Translate, or the like. Or remove this section.

[details="Content warnings if known"]
You can't be expected to know all the content of a book you haven't read yet, but if you know it deals with specific heavy topics, or the author is known for doing so, please include it here.

**Why are you nominating this book:** This section is optional, but it's nice to know why someone else is interested in reading a book, and might sway others to vote for it!```

I wouldn’t have any objections to you nominating something in a shorter way if you don’t have time before the weekend. Can always flesh it out later on. The Natively link itself potentially provides a lot of info - plot summary/estimated level/reviews etc.

Have not read this book - so I am not sure

Why are you nominating this book: Although originally written in English, and now translated into Spanish, this is a story of the life of a young Latina growing up in Chicago - a place very close to my heart. I have always wanted to read it. I think the length would make it very doable for the book club.

Yep, I’m fine with it too! It’s been a while since we’ve had nominations, after all.

Just to mention, there is a Catalan version of this book with a very similar cover to one of the Spanish editions called “La Casa De Mango Street” - be careful if purchasing that you get the right version!

Hi all - I am back from my travels. I voted, but I would also like to vote for Esperanza Renace, so will look for the updated poll.

Ack, I’m sorry guys. I’m going to add a separate poll in the original post, so please vote for it there! Tagging @Belerith so you see this as well.

Looks like we need a tie breaker - I personally would be happy to do Esperanza Renace. It’s rated easier and looks like a good level to break in my novel reading, but also fine if everyone would prefer La Casa en Mango Street. I know it is possible more people will vote.

I’ve always seen people redoing the original poll. What you’ve done there is a surprisingly simple solution!

It mostly works here because there’s not a limited number of votes in the original poll; if I really wanted to limit everyone to a certain number of votes I’d probably think about redoing the original one.

I’ll put up a quick tie-breaker poll! We’ve got five voters looks like based in the original “want to read a book in September” poll, so no chance of another tie.

Tie breaker!

  • La case en Mango Street

I can’t decide between the two but it looks like we’ve already broken the tie with the first three voters anyway!

Looks like Esperanza Renace is our winner! Would you like to run the book club thread for it @Micki?
