All romantic of him… Wonder if he’s actually right though?
I stopped taking specific notes here… But seemingly the asshole guy who got expelled lynched Juli… Which was kinda obvious from like 3 chapters ago, when Juli & Erik ran into him
Still lost on what exactly it is that Juli hates himself so much for
And then I read the rest… Contextualizing it, I can understand Juli’s reaction to everything (tho from my modern, not-German Catholic in a poorly managed all-boys school perspective, it bothers the hell out of me, and I just wanna give the poor kid a hug)
The ending wasn’t quite what I expected, but I think it’s better than what I thought I wanted earlier on (Erik & Juli getting together)
Overall thoughts: I loved it - the art, story telling, drama style, etc. That said I’m glad to finally be done - cuz 461 pgs that were above my comprehension level, over 2 months was quite a slog. Definitely really glad I read this though, and it makes me very interested to check out the author’s other works.
There’s an illustrated side story 湖畔に in some versions (not mine) about Erik’s 14th summer. It’s basically a short, light, epilogue to the story. I read the translation on Mangadex, and enjoyed it.
Anyway thx for having me along with this, and I’ll look forward to discussing parts when y’all get to them
Finally finished book 1 of 3 of my トーマの心臓 set, so I should be approximately 1/3 of the way through the manga now; book 1 ends just as オスカー is told he has to leave his room with ユーリand エーリク will be rooming with the latter instead. I’m sure this is going to go well…. I feel like this whole first volume has just been heaps of childhood psychological trauma…
Finished volume 2; we ended just after エーリク meet his biological father for the first time and decided to live with him after the next school break. I’ve been making pretty good progress on these books, I have to say. Not sure whether I’ve finally cracked the code or the decreased other book focuses on my plate have helped the most; I’m hoping to finish by the end of this weekend.
I’m enjoying the story; I wish there was more that immediately jumped out at me to comment on, but honestly the constant levels of melodrama tend to wear me down. It would be very, very easy for this to wear thin and get repetitive imo, but the author’s so far done a good job of keeping us moving as these adolescents navigate constant Shakespearean drama.
I want to go back and read your comments @暁のルナ once I’m done with everything; it’ll be interesting to see another person’s perspective on it all.
Edit: Oh, the third volume of my set is only half トーマの心臓, so I’m only about 100 pages from finishing. I’ve been skipping the extra stories in the books so far, to be honest… I feel like there was one you had asked me to report on @暁のルナ?
No idea, and can’t think of any particular reason why I would have. So no need, unless you feel like it.
I did mention that there’s an illustrated side story 湖畔に in some versions (not mine) about Erik’s 14th summer. I think that’s worth reading afterwards - it’s basically an epilogue.
Done with トーマの心臓! I left a review on the book page, but overall I enjoyed it, even if I was getting tired of the dramatics by the end. I’m glad that ユーリ decided to leave for another school at the end; I was worried for a while he would also have committed suicide by the end.
I didn’t have this in my copy, sadly; could you give me a quick summary? Anything interesting happen in it?
Looks like I’d better read some more of this – I’m about halfway through. I do think if I wasn’t dealing with the small print in the bunkobon edition I’d find it easier going…
