Week 2 | こいものがたり/사랑 이야기 | BL Book Club

Welcome to the home thread for こいものがたり!

This book club is part of the BL Book Club. The club had voted to read both volumes, but that can be TBD depending on participation.

Natively pages:
:jp: こいものがたり | L20
:es: Historias De Amor 1 | L24??
:kr: [비비] 사랑 이야기 | L24??
Browsing on anilist I noticed that this series is translated into both Korean (Ridibooks link: 사랑 이야기) and Spanish, although neither are currently on Natively. I’m putting this in the all languages club for now and maybe we can pick up some additional readers.

:rotating_light: I’m making the executive decision to run the club in this single home thread unless there’s opposition to that idea. :rotating_light:

English Summary

In the spring of their high school days, Yuiji Hasegawa suspects that his kind but quiet classmate, Yamato Yoshinaga, has feelings for his straight best friend, Kyousuke Hongou. Ending up in the same study group, he stumbles upon Yamato holding a sleeping Kyousuke’s hand, with embarrassment apparent on his face after being exposed.

Despite having qualms about Yamato’s homosexuality, Yuiji keeps what he saw a secret, thus marking the beginning of their friendship. The two boys’ experiences with love differ vastly, but their bond seems to grow as they try to understand each other. However, the question remains: could their relationship evolve into something more?

  • Spoilers should always be hidden using spoiler blur.
  • When discussing a specific section, please mention where you are in the book, ideally by chapter so people reading different versions have a clear point of reference.
  • Feel free to read ahead if it’s exciting, but please refrain from spoiling ahead of the appropriate week.

Magical Boy Natsuki x Loveits is wrapping up this week, but with only a few readers left, so we could theoretically start こいものがたり ASAP (feel free to comment if you want an even sooner start date). That said:

From a survey of the first few pages, there doesn’t seem to be furigana for anything but names on their first appearance. The first book is 194 pages and the second is 294 pages. Given that, how quickly would you like to read with the club?

Ugh, I just realized that I put the questions as options. Let’s just pretend like we didn’t see that

I added the Spanish version: Historias De Amor 1 | L24??. For better or worse there doesn’t appear to be a digital Spanish version; I’d be tempted otherwise.

I just found the Korean version on Ridibooks, so I’ll probably join. Somehow there’s a bug preventing me from adding it to Natively, but yeah, I can confirm it’s been translated to Korean.

Thanks @eefara and @HopeWaterfall for grabbing links to the translated versions. I added that into the top post (and the Korean version into the thread title) in hopes of luring some more readers

It looks like May 5 is currently winning for a start date. Surely you’ll have time to get the physical version by then :innocent:

Looks like we’ll be starting May 5. I’ll take a look at the volumes and put together a 40ish page per week schedule for us. See you all in a few weeks!

Hmm… Maybe if you give me permission to stack a few more books (that will immediately not be looked at for another few months) in the order I could be tempted…

granted
hehehe I already added to my started reading…ready when I get back from vacation

I have a schedule for us in the top post. The chapters in the book break down into an average of about 45 pages, and as much as a tried, I couldn’t really get a 40 page schedule to work out. Instead I think I’ll add in some catch up week(s) to slow our pace down. And with that, another poll!

What should we do about catch up weeks?
  • 1 break (after book 1)
  • 2 breaks (after book 1 and halfway through book 2)
  • Other (please comment below)
  • Let’s vibe check around week 3

Also, @Belerith if you have a copy of the second manga, could you also check my break for Chapter 9? I picked it by looking at the grid of images and found what looked like a scene change, but I didn’t want to read anything that far into the story :innocent:

really will depend on everything else and life in general

also depends on how dense/challenging the text is as we go (sometimes some books are surprisingly easy then hit a super long wall of text or whatnot here and there)

def vote for a week break between the two books (at least right now)

The book has been acquired. See you all on Monday

There’s a yes24 link as well, but I’m also getting an error when adding to Natively.
I’m posting this as a reminder to myself to try again later.

Oooh, we start today! Exciting! I didn’t end up picking up a Spanish copy, but I will be reading along in Japanese. :+1:

korean, spanish… only have the japanese copy myself
why does it seem like everyone is reading it i every other language than japanese

started reading yesterday … got about halfway through ch1…not used to 45-55 page chunks a week for a bookclub (finally leveling up mayhaps)

Finished ch 1. Can’t say it’s grabbing me so far, and it’s a bit hard to follow (tho that’s partially my fault for not taking care to remember the names). I don’t really like the perspective character much - I’ll give it another chapter or two tho

Curious to see what others do/don’t like about it

I’m reading in JP lol

felt this yesterday… started a little all over the place
and agree should have paid closer attention to the names

also zombie yaoi hands :raised_hand_with_fingers_splayed:

And we’ve started!
Usually y’all let me sleep in but not today! I did actually plan on starting the thread last night since I’m in Pacific Time but I guess I forgot. On the plus side we’re just in this one thread so it doesn’t matter that much.

Also the handwriting is such a pain… Like does it have to be that small? It doesn’t seem to be anything important most of the time, at least

Finished week 1’s reading; I agree with others in that it took me a bit to orient myself. The art’s quite nice, but I’ll need to read a bit more to see what I think of the story. I can’t tell yet if 吉永 really is interested in 恭介, or if he’s interested in 長谷川 but 長谷川’s just misunderstanding things?
