What are you watching today?

I wonder when you watched Clannad, especially S1. The payoff for after story is great, but I don’t think S1 in particular has aged that well, based on my attempts to get viewers used to more modern anime to watch it.

I watched it in 2015, so a while ago but still well after it aired. I liked the animation and comedy, and the drama and emotional impact were still good even if not to the levels of After Story. It was one of the first anime I watched though, so that could be a factor.

Do those viewers site any specific problems with it?

I finished 安達としまむら S1 | L25 and Ranma ½ S1 | L25 recently.

I did not like 安達としまむら. Unrequited pining that doesn’t actually go anywhere while the other characters is completely oblivious and does stupid stuff that no actual person would do to make the pining character blush… Sometimes it works in fanfic, doesn’t work well for 12 episodes.

Ranma was Ranma. A massive web of who has a crush on who. Humor was fun, I liked the visuals. I never watched the original so I can’t be sad about changes. Since I usually watch anime on crunchy with no subs, watching this with jp subs on Netflix felt super easy.

Since I finished 安しま (I’ll pretend that’s an abbreviation people actually use), I started スーパーカブ S1 | L22 and after one episode, I am already feeling like this one might have a pretty low grading due to lack of dialogue and not actual level of dialogue. Maybe it’ll get better after she makes some friends and it’s not just one girl talking about her motorbike.

I was pretty meh on it (tho I like pining generally) - but more so bc of the alien girl tbh

It sticks incredibly close to the manga though, in ways the 90s anime did not (for better and worse). So ironically a lot of changes are actually just sticking to the source. They’re both great in their own ways. My only complaint with the modern one was I didn’t care too much for the mixed media styles, but I got used to it

あだしま actually - tho I like your version better

Curious to hear what you think of it further in. It always looked somewhere on the border of interesting and boring as hell, so I never convinced myself to watch it

I had blocked her out of my mind. I didn’t like the ridiculous levels of go-nowhere-pining AND the alien girl. This was the series that made me realize I need to implement an episode limit to how long I watch something before I drop it.

 I shall report back with my thoughts later. Although I will warn that some of my favorite shows are ゆるキャン△ and よりもい so I have a high tolerance for nonsense bordering on boring.

So 先輩はおとこのこ S1 | L20 sure just kinda ends, doesn’t it? I’m assuming the manga keeps going, but it seems I’m unlikely to read that in print. Overall, I really liked it, although I have some thoughts about how they handled Makoto’s mom. Really appreciated that it actually showed Ryuji questioning his sexuality and looking at some LGBTQ websites. More than I expect from anime really.

Based on the info I found on the anime, it covers the first 7 volumes. There are 3 more volumes published, and since the webcomic is finished, I assume there will be 17 volumes total. (10 chapters per volume, 172 chapters, I guess they will fit the extra two chapters in the last volume?)

I’ve only finished volume 3 (so somewhere around episode 5 or 6), but I know people in real life who are like her.

 Now I wish I could read the end of the manga. They didn’t resolve the love triangle and I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop on Aoi’s terrible mom and poor Ryuji is just left thinking that his best friend secretly thinks he’s gross cause he’s (possibly) gay. So many loose plot threads.

My issue with her wasn’t that she was terrible, but more that they gave her a reason for being terrible. Prejudice doesn’t have a reason.

Well, I couldn’t stop myself and saw that disappointing spoiler  I sure hope it’s not going to be one of those stories where nothing gets resolved until the very last chapter and then immediately “the end” with no exploration of what comes next.

Is that where they left it? It’s been a while since I finished it, but it wrapped up in December so it hasn’t been that long.

I thought there was another episode after that…

Well now I need to rewatch the scene in the ferris wheel because it’s possible I missed some things.

I’ve been in a drama mood lately. I’m watching 波うららかに、めおと日和 S1 | L25?? which is currently airing and I still have a few days until the next episode, so apparently my answer was to binge all of アオハライド S1 | L24 today while I waited, lol.

波うららかに、めおと日和 is, well I guess you’d call it a period drama (?) set in the beginning of 昭和時代. The mains start the show with their arranged marriage, but they find they are actually pretty attracted to each other, every time they get closer he gets called away to his job in the Navy. It’s probably best not to think too hard about what the Imperial Navy was doing in the beginning of Showa…and I’m an American so I’m pretty good at sweeping the historical context under the rug to enjoy a tv show :upside_down_face: Despite the setting, the show is very modern (and the extent to which it’s full of modern tropes is maybe its one downside), but so far I’m always looking forward to a new episode.

I’m not exactly sure what it was about アオハライド that grabbed me so hard. I know the manga is pretty highly rated, so tbf, it does have a decent story and the leads did a good job. Also not me perving on the male lead half my age, no way. I think its biggest failing for me was the love triangle that included a teacher that seems to be going in the direction of the teacher :unamused:. Anyway, I kinda hope that I don’t like season 2 nearly as much bc I don’t really want to watch that whole season tomorrow (lies).

I gave up on the anime after 1-2 eps. Found the love interest boring & unlikeable, and couldn’t understand why the MC would even be interested. Haven’t tried the manga or drama tho, but if I ever did it would probably be the manga

I find drama to either be much better or immediately unwatchable in that situation. I guess part of it is with real people the actors either have chemistry or they don’t, and that can give me a way to get invested despite the character’s actions.
But yeah, looking objectively he’s an ass. But even in the first episode of the drama he was clearly giving her mixed signals, and at 16 or so I would have totally fallen for an ass like that

Let me tell you, it doesn’t work well for 9 light novel volumes, either. I did like the heavy on introspection and internal monologue writing style, though.

I’ve rarely found drama that seems watchable, and unfortunately the two I’m most interested in (彩香ちゃんは弘子先輩に恋してる S1 | L24 and おとなになっても S1 | L30??) aren’t easy for me to find

From what I remember in the anime it just seemed like he was completely shunning her - no mixed signals

that changed later in phases where he seemed to remember and others where it was as if they had had no prior relationship, but I also did not continue long enough to see where it ended up to.

Yeah in the drama ep 1 she sees him again, realizes it’s him, he’s an ass, but by the end of the episode there’s mixed signals. I don’t know if I could go much longer than that (and it sounds like the anime does).

Honestly that’s part of why I haven’t been back to イタズラなKiss | L20 for a while even though the whole series is free from the Japan Foundation (link to the US/Canada chapter but there are more out there). The will they won’t they + cold to the point of cruel just doesn’t do it for me.

Is anyone watching 魔物 S1 | L30?? ? It’s the most toxic romance I’ve seen in a while. I say that positively. A possible turning point was reached in the last episode and I’m very invested.

It’s also some kind of Korean collaboration so the acting is more subdued and the production quality is higher than usual.

Or ディアマイベイビー~私があなたを支配するまで~ S1 | L23?? Another drama about a twisted relationship but without romance between the leads. Though both of these dramas are tonally dark, this one is harder for me to watch. Nomura Kouta plays sympathetic characters well. I’m enjoying it equally.

I am so interested by this and also so sad it’s only on Amazon Prime in my region right now :slightly_frowning_face:
