So I created an account at rakuten while in Japan, everything went through. They didn’t even ask for an address or a phone number.

I created a Rakuten Kobo bookstore account outside of Japan without VPN and I’m able to link it to my international Kobo.com account after I changed my international Kobo.com account settings to Japan.

One of my cards refused to work, but I could get through with one of those online travel cards.

My Amex card didn’t work but the Mastercard works. So I continued using Mastercard.

The problem is, the book I bought doesn’t have a download button why looking at my library, so I don’t get what I was exepcting a .ascm encrypted file.

The Kobo app seems to have been discontinued in Europe, so I fear Japan might be next, but who knows. They force you to go through the browser.

Downloaded it from the JP website, downloaded the book, and with the kobo calibre plugin I was able to import it just fine.

Let’s just hope they don’t follow the Amazon steps…
