2025 Bingo Reading Challenge ✅

Oh no, that is so sad :frowning: :frowning: Also I needed to stop reading the article because it is spoiling a lot of Japanese works, seems like this condition makes for an interesting plot
Yes I did find the club and read all the comments!
Thanks for the invite  already got myself committed to too many things at the moment, but maybe in the future!

I’ve been checking whether the new thread is up every day for the past 10ish days

Hi everyone!! Sorry I haven’t been so active lately. I unfortunately dont have time this year to organize next year’s bingo thread, so if anyone wants to volunteer to set up a thread, take prompts and hold a vote then please feel free to do it on my behalf. :slightly_smiling_face: I was also thinking it could be a good idea to simply set up a thread and collect all the prompts from the last 2 years and let people make their own bingo card with them? Then people who want a challenge can do so, or people who want to make a card more in line with their normal reading choices can also do that.

If you are interested in the condition, there is a fascinating, but now very old documentary by the English director (and doctor) Jonathan Miller. The documentary is on a musicologist called Clive Wearing who famously had a ten-minute long memory after a severe brain infection. (The real case also features in a famous book by Oliver Sachs).
(Definitely no risk of spoiling Japanese novel plots in this documentary I think)

I’m happy to set it up in the next couple of days if no one else is up to it.
I agree with you, I think gathering all prompts from past editions and making them language blind could be a nice way for everyone to use prompts they like and didn’t get to use before. But new and shiny prompts are also good
Maybe limiting new prompt “nominations” to 2 per person would be a good compromise?

What do we think bingoers?

How should we choose our bingo prompts for 2026?
  • Only use past prompts
  • Only use past prompt nominations that didn’t end up being official bingo prompts
  • Use past prompts and allow a couple new nominations per person
  • Only use new nominations (same way we did this year)
  • Other? Explain in the comments
0 voters

And another thing:
Once we have a list of prompts, should we:
Vote on the prompts like we did this year and have an “official” bingo list to use (this is still flexible in the sense that everyone can still adapt the list to what they prefer, and stray away from the official list as much as they want, or stick to it for a challenge).
Or should we have a huge list of prompts and everyone chooses the ones they want to include in their card?

Should we have an official list of 25 prompts?
  • Yes - vote on the official 25 prompts
  • No - people can pick and choose from the huge list of prompts

I didn’t do bingo last year, so there are some prompts from before I’d be interested in doing.

I like the idea of being able to pick and choose my prompts for next year. This year I’ve read more than 25 books but I’m struggling to fit them all into bingo… I think if I could pick prompts I’m probably more likely to pick ones that are more likely to come up in what I’m reading.

Thanks for organizing it!

I’d like there to be a official 25 prompt just like this year, but still allow people the freedom to swap out a couple of prompts they don’t like. (There were a couple this year which were really difficult to complete for me so I swapped them)
But having mostly the same prompts as other people is still fun.

I want to try and read new genres of books next year so I’m looking forward to the bingo.

Honestly I’m going to do whatever I want with my bingo regardless of the vote results. I might even do a reverse bingo where I make my own categories for the books as I finish them. But I might choose some prompts to challenge myself and I just want to see what new ideas people have this year.

I voted for making an official list, but just as a “highly enouraged you use these prompts” sort of official list, with the freedom to swap out for other ones if you want. I think if a prompt already won the vote in a previous year, it should be fair game.

Same here.

I voted for Others because I want to do a reverse Bingo that can help me finish my existing pile of TBR books. Those that I already bought so that I don’t buy more books just to fulfill certain prompts from the official bingo prompt list.

One more and one more bingo!

Keep hearing about - ババヤガの夜 | L31

I was seeing it everywhere in Japan, and figured I’d give it a go.

Very pulpy, lots of gansters giving very over-acted performances, lots of violence (somewhat Pulp Fiction-esque).
Over all was OK, main characters didn’t feel quite developed for me, and some bits felt forced.

The way we did it last year was to nominate new ones, but people could renominate from previous prompts. So maybe I’m missing something but the difference between the two front runner options isn’t actually that much except the list for using last prompts + new will get Long!

I like having this for the added camaraderie and since people can still make their own version like this year there’s no harm. If it’s a free for all then for me I wouldn’t be as motivated to be honest. My goal isn’t necessarily blackout on the card though so it doesn’t bother me to leave some squares blank in favour of reading something else. I see it more as irl bingo where you’re really lucky to get 1 bingo, 2 is exceptional, and three is jackpot  which is arguably setting too low of a goal but it keeps it fun for me.

Thanks for carrying the torch, it’s so fun!

I’ve made the executive decision to leave this poll open until Nov 15th, and posted about it in the brand new 2026 Bingo Reading Challenge ✅ !!
Once voting is over for these 2 polls, we’ll open nominations - or not, depending on the results, and set up the list! Exciting

Thank you so much for organizing next year’s bingo, @monace; I’m super looking forward to it!

And a bingo card update from me! Just one square left, I’m so excited!

Someone else’s card: 木洩れ日に泳ぐ魚 | L32

Taken from @urikk2npg’s card. This one worked out really well; it was a former book club book I didn’t participate for, and I’d been wanting to read it for a while. Last square will also be a book club book, haha; I’m planning on using 伯爵と妖精 あいつは優雅な大悪党 | L30 for it!

I’m back! Did you miss me?

Here is my new and improved bingo in Google docs, with 6 new entries. I decided to make my own categories for all the books I read after 36 and change some of the existing categories.

I read, in no particular order:
내가 없던 어느 밤에 (marathon read). I ordered this book directly from Korea as it is by my favorite YA author and there is no ebook. As soon as it arrived, I read it in one sitting. Unfortunately, it was not that good.

지구 끝의 온실 (sapphic yearning). 김초엽 manages to make almost all her books sapphic, and this was no exception. I did take issue with the storytelling of the book, despite giving it 4 stars. The plot was plodding.

므레모사 (favorite author). Another 김초엽 book. A short read and very good.

네버 라이 (not saying the category). No comment since it’s a current book club book and I read ahead.

아라의 소설 (hate read). This was total slop. I read it on my library app because it looked cute and interesting. I had to finish it because I have a goal to reach. It wasn’t good.

유리탑의 살인 (BOTY, 인생 추리 소설). THIS BOOK! It’s a masterpiece. Brilliant. Ate and left no crumbs. Who could give any less than 6/5 stars to a legendary female detective who goes on tangents about real-world mystery books at every opportunity? Best female character in any Japanese mystery I’ve read. Not to mention the plot is mind blowing and tight and the writing is hilarious.

Onward to 64!

Oh nice, I just finished reading this with a WK book club. I have to admit I didn’t like Tsukiyo quite as much, but it was a really fun book overall.

Is it too late to generate one for 2025 and see if I can get a row with what I read this year + what I can fit in until the end of the year?
