I read it last year (for a different prompt, but bingo anyway). It’s pretty fun! The end is really abrupt though (as is common for that author).
Still posting from my phone, so no card still.

I am otherwise making zero progress on my bingo books as I am hyper focused on 魔導具師ダリヤはうつむかない ~今日から自由な職人ライフ~ | L30 (I don’t think I can do anything with that series; maybe consume an adaptation if I watch the anime as well?)
Maybe you read it because you kept hearing about it.
good effort
My first square this year!
- January:
- Category: Read a book and its adaptation
- I read シャドーハウス Vol 1 (Shadows House) and watched the first 2 anime episodes that perfectly cover Volume 1. It was great - definitely recommend!
For any Japanese learners, the full color version is currently free to read (volume 1 and volume 2) on Bookwalker until 30 Jan 2025, so you could get 2 squares in the next 10 days if you’re quick (from someone else’s card and 2nd volume, it was also a previous WK bookclub (spin-off still ongoing!), and many other categories…)
How difficult was it? I’ve read it in English and, assuming the translation is accurate in tone and style, it would be a very difficult read in Japanese. Especially how the two friends of the cat’s owner speak (I don’t know their names in Japanese, sorry!).
I think I will steal this for Book from someone else’s bingo card, I am a mathematician so it’s right up my alley!
I made it pretty. (For the sole purpose of showing the covers of the books in case that draws someone into wanting to read them as well.)
Today I’m checking off unusual genre for me with 小児外科のゆうか先生. It’s a workplace slice-of-life story set in a hospital, which I hadn’t read before. I liked it a lot! Loooots of medical terminology though.
Past Squares
Free Space: 暁のヨナ Volume 5
Past Book Club: 夏目友人帳
Features Cats: 同居人はひざ、時々、頭のうえ
It’s always hard to judge the difficulty of a book (that’s why Natively exists :p). It contains a bunch of dated grammar (mostly when it comes to letters) and vocabulary and cultural references from the time.
Speaking of character names, one is a pun with “drunk” (酩酊). I don’t remember the name of the other friend (or of anyone else involved in the story).
Can’t really say I have I got it in my recommended on Booklive once, and saw it on the read list of someone on Bookmeter once…
maybe I could keep talking about it
Bingo Update!!
One word title - 自滅 | L27
Horror short stories
Book + Adapation - 海がきこえる | L27 + 海がきこえる | L28
YA slice of live/romance story. This was super lovely and very pleasant to read, and the ghibli adaptation was great too.
A bit late to the bingo

But mostly because 化物語 ended up longer than expected (242k characters!)
As for Re;zero, it was a book I had started reading before the year started but only finished it this year so I wasn’t sure whether to count it or not so I decided on placing within the Free! square.
A new batch of books from Japan should arrive soon so I expect to pick up the pace and start filling in more squares!
Finished 紫禁城の秘密のともだち for “features a dragon/s” prompt. Parts were more difficult than I expected but there were full pages I was able to read and understand without look ups so definitely improving which was one of the hopes of taking part in this challenge
Next read is 竜のかわいい七つの子 manga for “Curious title” prompt.
What did you think of it? I’ve been intrigued by the cover.
I liked it. A bit off the wall at times but it made me laugh and want to keep reading. There is also a bit of myths/ legend stuff explained in it though it is Chinese folklore and not Japanese. One of my Japanese friends said he knew of it and that there may be some unusual word choices because it’s a translation into Japanese.
There were bits I was unsure of but it was more me not understanding the actual sentences or missing word meanings.
I found it easier than ふしぎ駄菓子屋銭天堂 except for the Chinese words but those are repeated so often that you get used to them. There are also a few pages at the start and end with a map of the area, building names and Character names. It’s full furigana as well though some Chinese names have Katakana next to them instead.
I’ll be reading the other 2 but will wait til I’ve done more of the books on my Bingo card so I have more time for the difficult books on it first.
third bingo square done, シメジシミュレーション 1 | L27 for “Keep hearing about it”.
I read 少女終末旅行 a long time ago (although not yet in jp), so I’ve had this one in my reading list for quite a while, and kept seeing a lot it in social media.
so I decided to use this as a chance to finally start it.

I guess I could add 魔導具師ダリヤはうつむかない ~今日から自由な職人ライフ~ | L30 as “book + adaptation” by watching the anime… but I heard it’s bad, so I don’t know about that.
Got my first book of the year for the bingo board. ‘Book you keep hearing about’ went to 月光ゲーム―Yの悲劇'88 | L36 which I loved. I do recommend reading my review before deciding if you personally want to read it because it’s a certain type of mystery style that I’ve noticed is a bit divisive but I had a great time and will absolutely read more by this author.
I ‘kept hearing about it’ in Japanese mystery book spaces online and also think it’s been referenced in a meta way by at least one other mystery book I’ve read (mystery books love to talk about other mystery books, it’s so cute <3 )
I need to catch up on my book clubs now but I’m excited to have space for another personal choice book in my line up
Four squares down, 21 more to go.
Set where I’ve lived: 博多豚骨ラーメンズ | L33
Not quite what I expected when I read the title. It tried too hard to be dark and edgy, I couldn’t take it seriously. Some parts I enjoyed but others I found a bit problematic. And I got unreasonably annoyed that none of the characters know about aposematism
I ended up giving it 3 stars, but it’s on the lower end of that scale. Not really my cup of tea, but it wasn’t terrible.

Released year of birth: 夏泊殺人岬 | L33
Non-human protagonist: 転生したらドラゴンの卵だった ~最強以外目指さねぇ~ 1 | L30
Cats: 猫の浮世絵 「江戸の猫ぐらし」の巻 | L31
Do you think it’s meant to be taken seriously? Maybe it’s because I mostly watched the anime and only read a small part of the first volume so far (but definitely planning to continue). The anime has quite some over-the-top vibes so I thought it’s basically comedy.
