Have events in the activity feed for content that is getting popular.
I want to see what other people are reading/watching in my language of choice.

This would be great. It would probably bring more trafiic to the site too. Ranking by popularity gives a static list that, I imagine, is reinforced by people picking the most popular books and ranking them. But a “hot right now” sort field would change daily and draw people back to the site. I guess when there’s book club activity around a book that would push it up the hotteness rankings and possibly affect the popular rankings too.
I think it would give the site a more dynamic feel which might lead to people reading more books!
