Aery's Sanctuary - Learning Log

I am Aery and this is my learning log. I have been actively learning Japanese for about one year in total now. I had a 9 to 10 month push 3 years ago, but it was sadly stopped due to real life and other requirements, but I got sucked back in about 3 months ago.

I started learning Japanese with the hiragana and the katakana - using homemade flashcards I studied at work and whenever. Then I jumped into learning via Remembering the Kanji, but it was really difficult, and I sort of did not properly study the last 300 Kanji that well. But I finished it!

Next, I did the Core 6k and did some reading of Tae Kim and then Cure Dolly. I did this without immersing, and I think this was both a good thing and a bad thing. Then I purchased a set of One Piece manga and began reading it. The first 3 volumes were super tough, then I was more or less okay by volume 14. I continued reading volumes and then broke off from Japanese. While doing this I studied with SRS until I had roughly 13,000 known words and I did a mock N1 got a passing grade until I did audio and that probably was the straw that broke my back. I had ignored audio in favor of reading and studying via srs for 3+ hours a day and reading manga for several more. Yet I could not parse a Japanese sentence.

My return kind of came on a whim, knowing that I was not great and figured I was probably closer to N3 from rust. I’ve been studying several hours every day averaging 5-6 typically and I clawed back most of my ability, but my audio input was terrible, and my grammar and reading had fallen a lot. That and I never did output. Not sure where I am in ability, but according to JPDB.io I know over 13k words (not redundant) and I casually read N2 manga without issue. Yet I feel inadequate still.

October I did the listening challenge and hit 100 hours which was my goal and while I can parse a fair amount of Japanese audio I have so much to do! November my goal is to read 100 books (manga and/or light novels). So far I have read 146 books and would like to hit 250 by the end of November.

First major goal: I would like to finish Naruto and fill in the gaps in One Piece that I have on my reading.
Second major goal: I would like to continue and ideally read 10 or more light novels this month - I started くまクマ熊ベアー | L23 and did the first 2 volumes, but I don’t like to abandon a series, so I am kind of sucked in now.

I mostly read physical print media, and I use an Exword for look ups. For anime and dramas, I have dvds/blurays and netflix. I’m going to try to do updates whenever I can! I want to be good at Japanese and I hope this keeps my progress steady!

So I’ve started a rather shotgun approach.

For 11/1 I wanted something fun and simple so I tried スーと鯛ちゃん 1 | L13 - which was just so cute when I saw it I knew I had to read it. I finished NARUTO -ナルト- 45 | L25 which keeps me on pace to finish it later this month.

Today’s reading for 11/2 is BLEACH 1 | L28 and SAKAMOTO DAYS 1 | L25 which were both simple reads.

Somewhere in between I started like 3 manga and dropped them because they were too much in fanservice. I spent a chunk of the day organizing my library at home and getting ready to read more this month.

Going to be tough keeping my target of 100 books for November but let’s try anyways!

First up I finished the light novel in two days, くまクマ熊ベアー 3 | L23 - Which was more of a cooking detour. MC still bothers me, but I guess I will let it continue to slide.

Then I found the first volumes for free on Bookwalker for some books and read them
ふくふくふにゃ~ん いの巻 | L10 - Cute, but fluff mostly.
ふくふくふにゃ~ん NEW 1 | L17 - More dialogue for sure. Still cute fluff mostly.
チーズスイートホーム 1 | L14 - The baby talk was a bit annoying but I am used to it.

In other news I did ソウルイーター 1 | L25 - which was overkill on fanservice but I hope future volumes curb it significantly.

Continuing Naruto with NARUTO -ナルト- 46 | L25 and NARUTO -ナルト- 47 | L25 - which the vocab here has been surprisingly difficult compared to earlier books. Some of the explanations and vocab are on a completely different level than what One Piece does. I’d say the more recent chunk in the 40s is befitting a L28-L30 range.

I read the title of the thread as Angel Sanctuary several times while passing though the forums and thought it was a book club for the manga.

Did NARUTO -ナルト- 48 | L25 which was a sorta boring volume. Read ネコの掟 1巻【特典イラスト付き】 | L24 which was just depressing in a way. Since 双星の陰陽師 1 was free I decided to give it a try and was more difficult than other furigana manga I have read so far. I also gave スライムライフ 1 | L18 a shot and it was a fun and simple read.

I am not sure if I can keep to 100 books this month, but I figure I need to read for 6-8 hours a day just to keep pace. Might as well try, I got a bunch of book coming in the mail later this month. Not much on thoughts for today, but it feels like I am getting worse at Japanese sometimes… maybe I am in a slump.

I know that feeling. It’s probably not that you are getting worse, but rather the opposite: you’re getting better, so now you notice your mistakes more/are aware of how much more you do not know.
Good luck with your 100 book goal! 8 hours a day is a lot. Make sure not to overdo it and get burned out.

Thanks. Yeah. I am feeling the pressure a bit. Though I do enjoy reading. Need some eyedrops I think. So much new vocab and I definitely need to improve my grammar skills more. Kana-only passages really wreck me still.

Today is my 100th day of coming back to learning Japanese!

My SRS is right now
Words Known: 18712
Kanji Known: 2335
Total known non-redundant vocabulary: 14286

My ability to actively recall these when I am reading is pretty good, but I often still have issues with recalling the spelling/reading for a good number of them. The SRS grind unfortunately can be one of those things that seems disappointing and tedious but it really does prime your memory to learn more. I think by the end of this month I’ll cross 15,000 non-redundant words.

I was listening to Livakivi’s 6 year Japanese update and I realized that a lot of his insights are similar to my own. My time away from learning Japanese did make me rusty, but a lot of was able to be regained fairly quickly and I am sure that I am better at Japanese now than I was when I quit learning. I may only have a year of serious study down, but I feel that when Livakivi goes through a book and gets hundreds of new words - that is what I feel like when I try to read something with even mild description. There is so many unique expressions and vocab in Japanese that you can formulate your thoughts in many different ways.

I have not gotten to the point where I have really internalized Japanese in my thoughts and I still do not really subvocalize when I read - I think the large gap in time really hurt me on this point, but I do enjoy reading a lot. Now I want to read Yukio Mishima’s Sun and Steel but such things are probably a good deal beyond my ability (and price range) right now.

I think this, also the subvocalization that you mentioned, can be helped with listening practice. When I’m doing a lot of listening with audiobooks and stuff and then I go to read, it’s like suddenly I can hear the words in my head so naturally. I think doing lots of listening has definitely improved my parsing of sentences.

Little update. Library was sorted more and I have a ton of stuff lined up but no time to read this weekend! Agh.

Read more Naruto up to 51 right now. Added and read some children’s books like うさぎとかめ (ブライアン・ワイルドスミス作品選) | L10?? and ず-っとずっとだいすきだよ (評論社の児童図書館・絵本の部屋) | L16. Enjoyed うくろう | L13 and less so for ごんぎつね (おはなし名作絵本 1) | L22.

Been watching some of my shows. Most recently did 秒速5センチメートル | L25. I’ll keep it short as my activity log is packed enough with stuff I do, but I still struggle with listening a lot. Not sure if I am going to hit my 60 hour listening goal this month.

So far about 20 hours of listening. Catching up on that. Finished the live action からかい上手の高木さん S1 which was nice and complimented the anime. Started ドラゴンクエスト ダイの大冒険 S1 which has the first 50 episodes on Netflix - but it seems the other 50 are missing? Ugh. Disappointing in a way. Continued with はじめの一歩 The First Step and it is in a bit of a slump for me. Started 天空侵犯 S1 which I did 5 episodes and I am not sure if I will continue - it just is not holding my attention.

Haven’t had much of a drive to manga so much as of late. Something seems to have clicked in a way about grammar and I’ve found it easier to read complicated sentences and comprehend them better. Though I am not entirely sure where this improvement is coming from. Haven’t done as much pure reading, but I think the listening is starting to pay off when it comes to reading as I can subvocalize more now.

Life has been busy, but I think I hit some burnout - and I need to get over that. This tends to happen to me when I realize that I am approaching the end of a series (like Naruto) and I don’t want to jump to another series and I don’t want to finish it either. That and this seems to be the third or fourth major ‘history’ dump and the lore is twisted for the sake of lengthening the series.
