I meant to read these yesterday, but I got busy during my usual morning time slot and didn’t feel like listening afterwards. :X
We got soooo close, haha. I was amazed we didn’t actually take a tour of the in-progress restaurant. Progress on the author’s part!
Anyway, the highlight here was definitely ルッツ punching ギル in the second chapter. Probably not going to help the situation if ギル’s used to just having a time-out and quiet religious contemplation as his usual punishment.
I’m curious what the 与えるべこもの is going to be, if it’s something specific or just essentially a welcome gift of some kind from master to new attendant. ![]()
It all worked out bc now we’re synced again. ![]()
Omg as we walked past the restaurant I was so scared that I had called it ![]()
ngl, clothes shopping wasn’t my favorite topic for a chapter, but at least it was short and it seems like we’ll be done there for the foreseeable future ![]()
I’m continuing to be surprised how much ベンノand ルッツ are in this book. Not at all a complaint. Although I guess we’re about a third of the way in and have hardly done anything at the 神殿, so that’s the trade-off.

Definitely happy to have that brat taken down a peg (although I do agree that violence probably wasn’t entirely necessary).
I’m curious why ギル and not-フラン (I forget her name) acting the way they are doesn’t reflect poorly on them. It doesn’t seem like マイン could get fired for incompetence, so mocking her instead of helping her figure out what to do feels counterproductive. I guess they are also pretty young so maybe it’s partly just that? ![]()
I just feel like if I was saddled under an incompetent leader and there was no way to change that, I’d want to do what I can to make my leader competent asap…

I’m also really glad we haven’t just abandoned them; ベンノstill being able to act as a mentor for マイン is also really nice, though we are already able to see his limitations in that regard…

I figure ギル’s already known as a problem child, so this probably isn’t unusual for him. デリア (?) has that in with the 神殿長, so she can probably do whatever she wants.

That’s what I was thinking as well. Relatively extremely young + probably pretty sheltered and only familiar with 神殿 life.
Well, that explains that: ギル doesn’t even know what money is; no wonder he’s a maladjusted little brat. He receives the legendary 頭撫で there at the end of the chapter, bringing us a couple steps closer to being cooperative.
Ah, do we know how old フラン is? I’ve been thinking about that as I’ve been reading. He seems older/more experienced than the others, but he still gives off vibes of being rather sheltered.
Man, ベンノ showing up here again, it’s great. I’m enjoying マイン immediately making use of her new living quarters for mercantile purposes. The narrator’s extra-girly voice she uses when マイン brings out her inner お嬢様 is kind of annoying, so I’m happy when we drop registers and マイン isn’t extra squeaky.
Another good set of chapters today… We’re about 40% through and I haven’t yet had a whole chapter that I feel like could have been completely cut from the book yet… so yeah, maybe arc 2 is finally when I’m going to start getting invested. Although, I have a terrible feeling we’re getting a cooking chapter soon, lol
Ah, do we know how old フラン is?
I feel like it was mentioned in the chapter when we met them, but now I’m like, did we just get the other 側仕え and 神官長’s rough ages? ![]()
In the pictures he looks full grown and he acts like an adult, so by LN logic he’s probably 17 ![]()

I was just thinking the other day I’m really looking forward to マイン not being a child anymore. Her voice isn’t exactly baby talk, but after an hour a day of it I’m very tired of a child narrator, lol.
Speaking of お嬢様, I wonder when フリーダ and/or ギルド長 are gonna show back up…
The prophecy has been fulfilled, shitsurei!

I was pretty tired reading this, granted, so I probably missed something, what could have possibly blown フーゴ away about the soup? What could マイン possibly have had them do that no one’s apparently done before? It’s just soup, guys, you throw stuff in and boil it. It had, what, sausage, vegetables, and salt in it?
And I got a good lmao out of the, “I feel like I’m forgetting something…” and then デリア storming into the room.
Her sitting on ベンノ’s lap was pretty horrifying, and her insinuation at a grey-robed attendant’s duties for noble guests… (And her own duties by extension)
Thank you for that, デリア.
Sometimes I can’t tell for how realistic the author really wants to go: harsh life living in a highly stratefied society? Or small super-child cooks phenomenal meals no one has ever apparently tried, like tasty soup or leavened bread? I would be 100% fine with the realistic look at what society may be like, like here with the attendant duties, but it clashes so harshly with the goofy reincarnation shenanigans it always takes me by surprise.
Hmm, very interesting. I was wondering how exactly the church was supporting 70-80 orphans, and the answer is apparently “not at all”. I do like ルッツ’s scheme to essentially employ them as workers at マイン’s factory and have them gather raw materials for paper production; I feel like there’s definitely going to be pushback, but if they can win the 神官長 over, he can probably finesse some way for the 神殿長 to think he’s one-upping マイン by assigning her 40 new attendants.
It was a holiday here yesterday so I kinda slacked on my Japanese and only read one chapter yesterday. Im hoping to read a second this evening and not get too far behind…

I could just feel it in my bones.
At least this one had introduced two new characters so we kinda got some of them while they were cooking.

This continues to be one of my pet peeves about isekais particularly, but historical fiction or medievalish fantasy more generally. Things aren’t necessarily better because they’re newer, people weren’t but dumb dumbs in the past that just needed someone to show them all the technology that we have now. I find it hard to believe that no one has ever thought to come up with soup and sourdough bread. ![]()
I think this is also part of why I don’t like the cooking chapters. Given the access to ingredients, someone is probably going to come up with something similar to what マイン is familiar with. Like how most rice cultures have something like fried rice, most flatbread cultures have something like pizza, pretty much everyone has soup, and almost as many have something like dumplings.
Anyway, rant over ![]()

Yeah I am NOT AT ALL a fan of that. I’m going to hope that it all gets explained away in a very Plot Relevant™ tidy bow in the future, like everything else I complain about, lol
I have to say I really enjoyed ギル being a brat to デリア about how people who work get new clothes. Also the very last bit where she was so happy to see herself in her clothes (but got mad at people knowing it) I hope is insight into where she’s going, bc right now she’s kinda awful. ![]()

I’m not sure if “plot relevant” is the most appropriate description, but it is explained, yes. Along with the condition of the orphanage, it’s there to show that the temple isn’t a great place.

I want a holiday.
I may or may not need to start going back into the office at some point starting this week/next week (new manager, so let’s see how much he cares…), and if I do my reading will definitely slow to like a chapter on those days (like today, for instance). I’ll wait and see how things turn out.
How do you raise orphans in squalor and then they magically turn into worthy servants for the 青色神官 as soon as they are baptized? No. This is a plot hole too big for me to overlook ![]()
Although I guess we’re maybe starting to see the beginnings of the 下剋上, so that’s cool if that’s what’s happening.

Right? “We treat them like the filthy animals they are up until they turn 6, then they’re off to serve our noble patrons.” ![]()

Oooh, good callout! I forgot about that part of the title.
How do you raise orphans in squalor and then they magically turn into worthy servants for the 青色神官 as soon as they are baptized?
Well they first get cleaned up and taught by the other attendants, so not quite such a magical butterfly transformation.
But I agree, it’s not the smartest system.
Just one chapter for the moment; will try to see if I can read another today. It’s been a long week…
So glad to see that マイン will soon be adding the achievement of “child labor” to her list of amazing new innovations to this world.
(Also, I saw that praise about her amazing hangar design; you can’t hide from me.)
(I kid, I kid. mostly This is probably her best option at the moment, but I can’t help but wonder if the author keeps this development in mind and has some other, more unscrupulous person down the line round up orphans for the same thing…)
I read this last night but was too tired to comment… which probably means I didn’t get a lot of the finer details, but ah well. ![]()
I know we don’t have any set speed, but I’ll probably mostly keep pace with you since I have way too much to read already anyway. ![]()

That sounds good to me! Probably expect some breaks over this weekend/the upcoming week or so; work’s been really stressful lately and I haven’t really felt like doing anything but the bare minimum JP-wise. >.<
Tell work it needs to stop. How else are we going to get through this 1000 volume series together ![]()
But for real, don’t stress on account of me. We’re house hunting right now (ugh) so I’ll probably not have the most free time in the world either over the next month or two.
Good luck with the house hunt! I’m kind of amazed you’re keeping up with all your books along with that.
Back to our normal SOL chapters. マイン puts the orphans to work cleaning, gathering paper materials, and gathering foodstuffs, and she decides she wants to gift ルッツ and フラン with little メモ帳s, so we’re off to gather stuff for those. I like how ベンノ has cottoned on that if he follows マイン around he can pick up business opportunities for free. ![]()
