Decided to vote for things I already have this time instead of buying new books :joy:

Ahhh, I should have added クラにか (クラスで2番目) to my Suruga-ya order, in case it wins… I wonder if they’ll let me modify it

Am I the only dude in here? These nominations all look like girly dramas.

I think you’ll find that a lot of those actually have male protagonist and male target audience. And slice of life content tends to be easier, so you’ll find more of it in a beginner bookclub.

キノの旅 can be pretty dark. It’s definitely not girly drama. I think one that’s currently tied for first place is the pirate cat one. The rest I’m unsure of but understandable they look like girly drama considering most of the covers :slightly_smiling_face:

He is an adventurer, not a pirate

But yes, as @bbo said, it’s almost exclusively content aimed at guys. I only saw 1 book that’s explicitly for a female audience and one that isn’t marketed as a light novel, so it’s harder to say, but feels like it.

Edited for clarity.

That’s the one I’m going for!

Damn. I was already sold, due to all other nominations being fantasy girly covers and stories, but I could give pirate cat a chance.

If I had to guess, no. Also, plenty of dudes like girly dramas, as attested by the many male fans of shoujo and yuri genres.

Why not both?

I may or may not have first read クラスで2番目 bc the cover looked like it would be a yuri story (talk about baiting :joy:).

Note to self to look for some 女性向け picks next round.

Sorry  I called him that because of the eye patch and he reminds me of a cat in my street we nicknamed pirate cat. I didn’t think about that before I typed it.

Putting aside the term “girly drama”, I think the opposite actually. I’d usually assume a cover highlighting a female character is more likely to be targeting a male audience, not a female one. Honestly, the only nomination that looks like it targets a female audience from the cover alone is the otome game one.

Sorry, I wasn’t meaning they were that kind of book, just meaning I could understand why people might think that’s what they were. I didn’t mean to cause any offence or misunderstanding

It’s fine, I just found the initial comment and your response funny.

As a woman, I’ve noticed this as well, particularly in Japanese media - a lot of stories feature female (young) characters in the cover or as the main characters of the story itself, but are written by men and for a male audience. I personally don’t find them appealing/interesting, so I never vote or read them. But I can understand that one might initially think that these stories are targeted to women/girls.

I’ve been tricked a time or two when I started reading LNs. I expected the girl on the cover to be the main character, but she was the love interest instead  (and, in general, completely unrealistic in terms of behavior)

A lone girl, definitely for men. A girl and a guy, potentially for women, depending on how tender it looks. Multiple men and a woman, definitely for women. Multiple women (with or without a man), absolutely written for 14 year old boys.

What if it has a single cat with an eye patch?

…in other news, after reading the last few posts I kind of want a pirate cat book now.

It would require a sea? A ship as well, but I assume he could do without.

It’s not a cat (And it’s also not in Japanese), but Tress of the Emerald Sea has a talking rat on a pirate ship. The rat is not the main character unfortunately.
