Suggesting 駿河屋 / Suruga-ya for Japanese books, as they have an affliate program and carry a lot of out-of-print items that aren’t available on Amazon. I’ve only ever used the Japanese site, which requires a Japanese address to order, but the international site (which is just a machine-translated version of the Japanese one) apparently ships worldwide.

Thank you, I just ordered a whole bunch of books from surugaya because of the free shipping. I’ll post my haul in the physical media thread once it arrives

Did they do another free shipping thing recently?? I prefer cdjapan, but it’s hard to say no to free shipping

Looking at their blog, it looks like they do it every weekend. I’ll have to remember that and check if they’ve got anything I’ve been wanting that’s not on CDJapan one of these days…

When I saw there was free shipping I only had an hour before it ended

But looks like its a frequent thing, so its a good chance to get some cheap OOP books.

Is this free shipping to anywhere?? (Though they must be making the money back on the book prices – the title I looked at randomly was more for a second hand copy than cdjapan charge for the same book brand new. Nice option for the genuinely OOP and when you only want to order one or two books, though.)

That really depends on the title. A lot of the stuff I saw on Suruga-ya was cheaper or same price, but their selection can be a bit inconsistent

And yeah, free shipping to anywhere.

I got 23 books for a total of 9627 yen

Most were 300 yen. All second hand. We will see what the quality is like when they arrive.

Added as a provider! I’m not sure i’ll spend the time for the affiliate program right now, but thanks for that callout, will keep it in mind.

Last time I ordered there it still came cheaper than ordering at cdjapan, even though I had to pay a massive DHL customs handling fee (20€) – additionally to the customs, which I was expecting anyway. Just was hoping they would ship it via the normal post, they charge a way smaller handling fee  . Since the custom handling fee from DHL is so high, it only really works for me if I buy A LOT of books. The books I ordered were all cheaper than at cdjapan, that combined with no shipping made it come out cheaper in the end. But it wasn’t such a huge difference.

(Oh and I couldn’t tell with 90% of the books that they are second hand at all. They seemed brand new to me. With obi still on there and all)

Open Library is the specific section of the Internet Archive that lends out books (as opposed to archive.org which has everything and is kind of a mess to find what you’re looking for), so I’ll do a summary for that one:

Open Library is a project by the Internet Archive which lends out digital copies of the books in their catalogue, with books in dozens of languages available for free to anyone with an archive.org account. Materials are either lent in renewable 1-hour windows or have waitlists for longer 14-day borrows. All materials can be read in a browser using the site’s own reader, and some may also have DRM-controlled ebook downloads available. Scans are generally good quality, though text is not selectable in the online reader. Book titles are commonly romanized, unfortunately, which may make it difficult to search for books in non-Latin scripts.

Another library with Japanese ebooks is the Japan Foundation Digital Library, which offers free digital library cards to residents of Canada and the United States (you just have to fill an application using a Canadian/US address and wait to be approved). I’m not sure this one will work as a provider, though, because it doesn’t seem possible to link to individual book pages on Libby /:

Can Spotify be added as a provider? They have lots of free audiobooks in German available. :slightly_smiling_face:

I tried adding Open Library to the providers of すばらしき父さん狐 (ロアルド・ダールコレクション 4) | L22??, but the entry looks a little sketch :joy:

Any chance of users being able to provide a real title for hyperlinks and flag them properly as Free when submitting, or should I just wait until it’s added to the official provider list before trying to link it on book pages?

You can just tell DHL you’ll handle the customs yourself in the form you fill when your package enters the country. That way you avoid the fee. It’s pretty misleading.

Hmmmmm… I have no idea how that would work  I couldn’t really find any information on that for Austria, only for Germany. But thanks for the hint, will look into it!

Hmm, maybe they have country specific procedures. I got a link in a text message where there was a form and an option “I will handle the customs procedure myself”. Then I logged in to my countrys customs site and entered the info myself.

Oh I wonder if that’s an option in Canada… I similarly get charged about 20 CAD if I order more than 20 CAD of goods from them, so it means that I either have to order A LOT or VERY LITTLE. And I feel kinda bad getting air mail from Japan in a huge box for 2 manga (even though it saves me so much money).
