Maybe you are looking for https://imabi.org/? It does not have vocabulary for each lesson but the explanations are extremely detailed.
Tae Kim is also a legendary resource that gave me the same vibes as HowToStudyKorean.
Just brainstorming, maybe something like minato.jp.jf would be something for you? It’s basically the Marugoto textbooks as online courses. It doesn’t really have wordy explanations or worksheets, but it’s separated in clear chapters with Can-Do checkpoints and the online course format makes it easy to click through.
I think it must be complemented with some outside grammar though, I don’t really like the explanations there.
I’m unfortunately not familiar with that particular website, so I’m not sure if there are any JP study sources that really mimic it, but I can recommend giving bunpro.jp a shot. They began life as a pure grammar resource reinforced with SRS, but have since branched out to vocabulary. They also quite recently released a major overhaul in their onboarding process, particularly for beginners. They’re a paid site, but might be worth looking at.
I have this and multiple other Japanese textbooks if you want some pictures of some of the pages give me a shout. The only ones I have worked through were Genki, Nihongo Fun & Easy and みんなの日本語 初級 red book series but I have had a look through some of the others.
I have;
-Japanese from Zero books 1-5 (difficulty ramps up quickly and explanations weren’t always great for me)
-Genki 1&2 (didn’t understand some of the grammar explanations because they don’t go into great depth)
-みんなの日本語 初級 & 中級 (Minna no nihongo beginner and intermediate series - only done the beginner red books, all in Japanese but felt the English grammar guide had better explanations than Genki for me though I don’t always understand stuff because I don’t understand those word types in English eg transitive and intransitive)
-Quartet (not used yet)
-Marugoto (first 6 books - a lot of cultural stuff is explained in these)
-Nihongo fun & easy (some better grammar explanations though they do keep it short and simple)
-An integrated approach to Japanese (not used yet)
-Dictionary of Japanese grammar (beginner, intermediate & advanced - I like these for the amount of explanation there is, gives examples and separates different meanings of the same grammar into different sections to give more clarity)
-A handbook of Japanese grammar patters for teachers and Learners (similar to dictionary of Japanese grammar but all in one book and not as comprehensive though it does have over 3000 entries and includes grammar patterns from real life as well as JLPT and N1/N2
-Essential Japanese (Martin edition - seems to be referenced a lot bit is an older resource)
-初級日本語文法 (not used yet but about 95% all Japanese)
-中級日本語文法 (not used yet but again around 95% all Japanese)
-Irodori series (free online - goes from N5-N4 iirc, does have additional resources available on their site that may give additional info for grammar or such)
There are some individual books on certain parts of Japanese as well that I have (such as all about particles, basic connections or Jazz up your Japanese with Onomatopoeia)
I never understood those (or direct vs indirect objects) until I learned Japanese. I don’t think English really cares all that much about them. It’s hard to understand what they’re talking about without a language that makes a stronger distinction. Which doesn’t really help you all that much while you’re learning, but one day it’ll click and then you can take it to a different language and know what they’re talking about.
I don’t think it will ever click with me I just found if I learn the vocab in context and understand the sentence’s English equivalent, I’ll be fine though. I never understood it when they taught me English either but I can use that fine.
i do have minna no nihongo, but it felt disengaging and i don’t care too to look between two books to learn one thing. i think i’ll use it as a reference and grab the vocab words from it . it seems good overall, just not for me. thank you for the recommendation though!
this looks incredible!!! i could have screamed from joy upon seeing how many lessons there are and how detailed they get! one of the lessons i saw had 78 example sentences – how beautiful. thank you so much
whoops i just realized i could have replied to everyone at once instead of doing it all separately . but now i know
thank you! i checked it out just now and, from what i’ve seen, i like it. it seems to have a good amount of vocabulary in context which i love to see
i have to look into this more too – it looks interesting. not sure if it’s exactly what i’m looking for, but it seems cool nonetheless!
thank you! i’ll look into some reviews or try a free trial to see how it is. the srs system sounds appealing. i guess it also depends on how much it costs
this is exciting – i love looking at textbooks and books in general so i’ll have a field day with this!
and thank you lots to everyone who listed a recommendation! i am happy to say that i think i have been directed towards what i am looking for
wow it’s been a while since I last logged in on here!!! I’m happy to report back that I’ve finally gained the motivation to focus on Japanese and found what resources / methods work well for me!!! I’m once again in that state of overflowing motivation, but this time around I’ve managed to use it to stay consistent! I plan to write up a proper update with what I’ve done so far and keep track of what I’m reading and watching.
I hope everyone’s been doing well! I’ve got lots to catch up on.
side note: I previously had my user / nickname set on here as “soboro” but changed to “caramelcrunch” to match what I use on almost every other platform. I don’t remember why I left this as the odd one out in the first place… but now everything matches!
