This sounds hilarious. And surely there’s an otome game out there with this premise?
Ah, and there should be two open slots left for nominations.

A big one.
Reason(s) for nominating: Highly rated, won prizes and sits on my shelf.
I have this one and I want to read it but it’s pretty long so not sure if I want to read it immediately
I’m listening to this right now on audiobook, and there’s a fair bit of all school subjects (which makes it a teensy bit hard to just listen to ). Just in case there’s fear of any other school subjects at play
There were a number of people talking about doing an informal club for this book later this year. Not to say that we can’t read it here instead/also, but a head’s up.
Personally, I probably wouldn’t vote to read this next because my next few months are backed up already with reading, and I think with the bookclub pace it would take most of a year to read
I would love to read かがみ, but as @shitsurei has already mentioned there are plans for this later on this year and I feel like that I need a bit more time to jump into this one. 時間割男子 sounds like it could be fun, despite the math warning.
Now including freddyg, I have 9 people total on my list interested in a かがみの孤城 club (and as already mentioned, most people were expecting it later). We could strategically vote it into this club later in the year, or run it separately from this club when people are ready. It looks like it would be a popular pick for this club if we time our votes right
All right, nomination list has been updated. We’ve got one more slot left.
Available formats: physical / ebook / full furigana
あたし、宮森マイ。お父さんが再婚して新しいママと、同い年の男の子・シュウと暮らすことに。シュウはまあまあイケメンだし、ドキドキの展開!? って思ったけど、そんなわけなかった! 「お袋は魔女だ」って言うオカルト好きの変わり者。しかも新しい家は、幽霊が出るってうわさの「おばけ屋敷」。ある日、目の前に幽霊があらわれて――あたしは「魔女と戦える数少ない娘」だって!? イヤな予感がするんですけど!
My name is Mai Miyamori. My father remarried and I have to live with my new mother and a boy of the same age, Shu. Shu is a fairly good looking guy, and I’m very excited. I thought so, but it was not to be! Shu is an eccentric occultist who claims that his mother is a witch. Moreover, his new house is a “haunted house” that is rumored to be haunted. One day, a ghost appears in front of me and says that I am one of the few girls who can fight witches! I have a bad feeling about this!
None known.
Reason(s) for nominating: Honestly, I’m a sucker for the remarriage plot. It always pays off. Plus this one’s got a witch and a witch fighter set up. Also, it’s currently graded at lvl 22 which is lower than the past books with the club so maybe we can also get some new readers involved.
That’s our last slot then; thank you for playing everyone. I’ll put up our poll for our next book next week. See you all then!
Poll open!
The poll will close automatically on February 16th. You’ve got unlimited votes!
Note: I will be asking the person who nominated the winning book if they would like to run the resulting book club. If they’re no longer active/do not wish to run the club, other participants will be welcome to step in in their place.
I’m reading ふしぎな声のする町で: ものだま探偵団 now and loving it. I’m not sure if I should vote since I’m halfway through, but I would participate! Just to add to the nomination post - I have the hardback and regarding kanji, it shows kanji through grade 6 and removes furigana through grade 4.
I started the list below (wip) to gradually keep track of great books like this that have a clear kanji/ furigana strategy:
If you plan to participate, you should vote.
I just finished 時間割男子(1) わたしのテストは命がけ and am 65% of the way through 四つ子ぐらし 1 ひみつの姉妹生活、スタート!
I’d probably also join the discussion for both (esp since I’m listening to each as audiobook only and missing maybe 5-10% of the dialogue, depending on what they’re talking about and/or if I’m getting distracted ), but didn’t vote for either since I wasn’t technically reading them with the club…
I guess we have unlimited votes so it doesn’t hurt anything to add votes there if it makes sense
Oh that’s awesome! My “strategy” is just reading ebooks so I can look up the pronunciation, but I might check out some of the sparser furigana books.
That is really great, are you on kindle or something like that?
I am getting used to reading digitally for manga, but for normal (prose) books I really have an old school affection for paper
Yeah, Kindle. I also prefer paper books (in Japanese at least, I do not like reading paper books in English ), but only if I have limited lookups or can ignore the unknown words.
For now I’ve told myself no more paper books for a while (unless I’m going to read them immediately).
Outside of digital manga that have been run through Mokuro I try to only read physicals (for a lot of reasons). So I guess we’re opposites
I do the same, mangas I read electronically, non manga books physically.
The only physical manga I own are the ones of the Yotsubato series, and here I will buy number 16 as well, and some ones I got from a friend and some from the Non Non Biyori series. But the latter were of so poor printing quality that I did no longer want to buy any more of them.
In physical books, which are mostly novels in its broadest meaning, I can add furigana, or mark the first appearance of some name, or some interesting or for the book important phrases.
A reminder that our next book poll closes this Sunday! Get your votes in while you can!
Okay! The people have spoken, and they want hot textbook dates! 時間割男子 1 わたしのテストは命がけ! | L23 is our winner~! @hotdogsuplex as the book nominator, would you like to run the club?
