Would it be possible for you to link any home threads you create for individual series here, EBW? That way I can just link to this thread for the book club master list.
Edit: whoops, I see you’re already doing that. Carry on.
lol it’s cool! Though wow those tables look terrible on mobile, whoops
(Also would you mind using the nickname EBW for me instead? “Enby” is short for “nonbinary,” so it’s kind of like calling a user with the handle “gay[character]” just “gay.”)
Of course! My apologies, I didn’t realize.
It’s fine, and thank you! ♡
I hate to be that person but since you said it’s ok, I think the most common phrasing (that I’ve seen is) is 積読崩し Got your back
Looking forward to seeing how many of these you knock out! I certainly need to reduce my 積読 pile as well.
Thanks! I’ll change it
I wouldn’t worry about it! Just because a different group read the book doesn’t mean that no one’s ever allowed to form another club with the book. 本好き for example was a WK club as well.
I also own 天気の子 and want to read it at some point - but not before New Year’s as I have too much on my plate until then. Would you be interested in reading it together with me in January or February?
Absolutely! Just let me know when you’re ready to start reading, and I can set up a thread
I’ve been having a fun time reading through your thoughts you jot down for your books, especially the sports ones; I have zero background in sports, so I learn things in English and Japanese here. What are your favorite sports to read about? Any that you find less interesting than others?
I’m glad you’re enjoying it!
Funny enough, I never particularly liked sports (though it could just be football, since that’s all that ever got watched in my house. I have less than zero interest in football. I haven’t tried watching any other sport yet, but I’m starting to think maybe I should), though I did play soccer for a couple years as a kid though I wasn’t really any good. All I could do was run fast. I was surprisingly pretty good at badminton the couple weeks we played it in HS gym class, though. But despite not caring for sports in general, I somehow still fell deeply in love with sports anime/manga/novels.
I will give any sport a shot—except of course for football. So no Eyeshield 21 for me lol. While there’ve been individual animanga I didn’t care for, there hasn’t been a sport I’ve tried yet that I wouldn’t be willing to read/watch more of. Hell, I’m in the middle of a golf anime (Birdie Wing) and I love it, though it is ridiculous. My favorites are volleyball and baseball, and tennis and badminton likely rank up there too. You’d probably expect soccer to be on there, but nope, it’s just normal. Apparently I’m drawn to sports with no time limit, where how long it lasts depends on the flow of the game. Baseball’s the only one that can end in a tie, but innings are more like rotations than sets.
I wouldn’t be surprised if おおきく振りかぶって being my first sports anime influenced that at all. That series has always had a special place in my heart.
Since I know barely anything about sports even in English (though in soccer’s case it’s more that I’ve forgotten a lot), and on top of that terms aren’t always the same in English vs. Japanese even when they use English words (e.g. a double play in baseball is called a “get two,” or a dump in volleyball is a “two”), I end up getting confused fairly often and having to look up a lot, but it’s still fun. I think I own nearly as many sports manga as other genres combined, though I also have my music manga on my sports shelf too (ギヴン and 少年ノート), partly because it’s currently got more space and partly because when I watched ましろのおと, I kept thinking of it as a sports anime even though it’s about shamisen lol
(I’m joking - I love it, but it’s okay if other people don’t ^^)
I also really like sports manga, although I haven’t read that many. Something about the drive, the team spirit, the growth… It’s a good recipe!
I haven’t read a lot in Japanese yet, so your posts make for a good go-to for recommendations.
Yup, I love it. It’s true of shounens in general too though (though maybe more “power of friendship” than “team spirit”), and fantasy was my genre growing up, so you’d think I’d favor ones with more of a fantasy setting, but nope, it’s sports for me. (I actually haven’t read very many fantasy in Japanese yet.)
Of course, I prefer sports dramas (the more character-driven ones), which tend to be josei I think, but I still love sports shounens as much as the next sports animanga fan.
Thanks, I hope you’re able to find something you like! (sports or otherwise)
I hope to reach your level of not much one day. (I think I see what you’re saying, though? It takes a long, long time to do enough reading to be considered “well read” in any language.)
I’m sorry, let me add some more context - I haven’t read a lot of sports manga (or books) in Japanese yet!
I haven’t read a lot of my usual genres (fantasy, historical fiction, sports and shonen manga) since I started reading in Japanese. It’s been mostly slice of life and mysteries, with a sprinkling of romance. Oh, and light novels with an Isekai theme, I suppose that kind of counts as fantasy? Feels different though.
Aaah, I see, haha. And re-reading your original post, I probably should’ve inferred the “sports” bit anyway. I feel that with not reading much of your usual in Japanese; I’m usually a pretty heavy fantasy and nonfiction reader myself, but I don’t think I’ve read much what I would consider my standard fare in Japanese yet.
Day 8 of Advent is a baseball manga, 8月アウトロー
Is football just rugby by a different name because America’s gotta be ~special~. I wanted to see if August Outlaw’s mangaka had written anything else (though I still haven’t actually started it; I like the art), and he’s got a two-volume manga called Hello!! and I thought it was football but apparently it’s actually rugby.
I’d heard of rugby but didn’t know anything about it, but if it’s just football, then I guess that’s two (?) sports I’m not touching.
(Also why change football to soccer and rugby to football, that’s needlessly confusing)
I do have a tiny recommendation for you EBW; I don’t read much sports (no particular reason, it just doesn’t come up often for me), but this is one of the few sports series I’ve had on my pile for a while: ─HOME─ (series) | L24??. It’s basketball, I believe. I haven’t even read volume 1 yet, just a chapter or two, but I liked what I read!
