Continuing on our challenge to ourselves to boost our listening skills, the February challenge is ready for signups! Set whatever number of hours feels like a reasonable goal for you and feel free to share the things you’re listening to, your successes and setbacks. We’re in this together :muscle:

I’ll be reducing my target this month slightly to 25 hours, both because it actually was a little challenging to balance all my Japanese learning activities and I’m trending ahead of where I need to be for my yearly goal anyway.

February’s off to a great start! My primary TV focuses have been and remain 中学聖日記 S1 | L26 and D.Gray-man S1 | L22??; the former I’m suuuuper enjoying, and really glad my roommate recommended to me, the latter has been nothing but filler with more filler on the horizon, which is great since I’m watching without subs. It’s feeling like a comfy level for me: maybe 80%-85% is understandable without them.

I’d like to read at least one audiobook this month, most likely along with the text. I think I’m going to count it in my stats; if watching TV with subs counts, then this feels like the same thing. Anything I read along to while listening is likely going to be above my pure listening level anyway, otherwise I’d ditch the text. Might finally be time to pick up 本好き2… :eyes:

This month one of my goals is to figure out how to work on my listening goal while at work; my work activities are only sometimes mindless enough to let me listen to something in the background, but not usually. :thinking: Podcasts will, in some way, shape, or form, probably be the way to go.

Finished 中学聖日記 yesterday! I really enjoyed the show; glad my roommate recommended it. This leaves a bit of a hole in my schedule; I tried a little bit of a couple of shows this morning, but nothing’s really calling to me for various reasons.

  • アンナチュラル - far too difficult for me right now even with subtitles, unfortunately. My medical game is too weak.
  • のだめ カンタービレ (live action) - seemed promising, but the live action appears to be trying to emulate gags from the manga (e.g. silly faces and such) faithfully, which is a bit too cringe for me early in the morning.
  • 放課後カルテ - I did get through all of episode one sans subs, but it just wasn’t speaking to me. I’ve been pretty tired over the last day or two, which might be a contributing factor.

I’m kinda thinking maybe it’s time to listen to an audiobook for my next listening “project”; thing is is that I want to listen and read at the same time, but I can’t decide whether that’s “cheating” or not. I suppose it’s the same thing with subtitles, and I’ve been counting those… :thinking:

Since I’m still relentlessly focusing on マリア様がみてる | L29 it’s no surprise that I’m nowhere near my monthly goal, but… I did find a cool listening channel, aimed at N3-N1 levels:

It’s not riveting or anything, but it’s interesting enough, and does have JP subs (and additionally transcripts, probly via patreon or something). Also someone asked a question about Satori Reader recently, and I was glancing at their current offerings, I noticed they have a YuYu Nihongo section now - which was pretty cool to see!

Otherwise finished キャンディ ボーイ S1 | L26 and that went well enough

It’s cringe but it’s so classic :sob: never getting over Chiaki sempai in that drama. I also always think “ミルヒ” in my head every time I see the word Milch in German thanks to this drama. Iykyk

Got in a bit more listening in via 美少女戦士セーラームーン | L24 - the 日常 parts feel a lot easier than they did in July. Meaning both my recognition & comprehension have improved. Still it’s not 100%, and I wish I could watch with subs

Kinda ironic, cuz I was planning on ママレード・ボーイ S1 | L20 being my low effort listening content, but I still haven’t started it (and probably won’t, cuz I’m enjoying Sailor Moon, so I’ll stick with that)

My 本好き2 listening is going quite well so far; one big change I’ve made to how I keep track of my listening time. Originally I’d count just the time elapsed in the audiobook itself, but I have since changed to tracking elapsed real-world time, as that allows me to account for rewinding, pausing to look up words, and pausing to re-read through a particularly twisty sentence so my brain can process it. It’s technically less accurate in terms of my actual listening time, but it’s more accurate for the time I spent working on my listening, so I’m pretty happy with the setup.

I’m about 30% through 本好き２ somehow; I’m on track to finish by the end of the month.

Picked up a bunch more anime, and also this playthrough of the flowers visual novel:

She reads everything outloud, and also comments, so it’s great listening practice. I do plan to eventually play through the game as well, when I can decide whether to buy it physically or digitally (and when I’m reading less things :sweat_smile: ). Anyway at 21 hrs I definitely won’t hit my 40 goal (that would require 4 hrs of listening per day this week, and I definitely will be spending more time reading than that), but I’ll be satisfied if I at least make it up to 30

Just made it over the finish line for my 25 hour goal this month. I’d intended 25 hours to be a lower goal this month, down from 30 hours in January, but of course, I forgot that February is 10% shorter than January, so reducing the monthly goal by 16% wasn’t actually that much of a change in daily workload.

Congrats!! I only got a bit over halfway on mine (25/40), but I was expecting that.

@暁のルナ you haven’t posted the March thread, right?

February Final Thoughts:
So I’ve been operating on a base goal of 30 hours and two stretch goals of 36 and 42 hours; this month I ended with a total of 39 hours, 44 minutes, and 26 seconds. So first stretch goal met :white_check_mark: , but not the second. As much as I would’ve loved to meet the 42 hours, I’m fairly happy with my 39 hours, especially given as I was on vacation the last week of the month, which means all my usual study routines went out the window. Plus February’s short, so there’s fewer days for me to make up the difference. Onto March!
